Description
SPECIFICATION
Manually-operated labeller
The present invention relates to a manuallyoperated labeller which separates labels from a carrier strip on which the labels are stuck in succession by turning back the carrier strip at a carrier strip turnback part and intermittently feeds the carrier strip and performs printing on the label before the labels are separated from the carrier strip at the carrier strip turnback part.
In such a labeller, the label receiving part which supports the labels during printing is often made of a synthetic resin to improve the printing effect.
Most labellers of this type are made up by integrally moulding the label receiving part and the casing and accordingly the casing is also made of a synthetic resin.
However, such a labeleller suffers from the disadvantage that the label receiving part is prone to be broken or damaged since the label receiving part which is pressed by the printing device during each label printing operation is not very strong and consequently it tends not to support the label due to breakage or other damage.
The object of the present invention is to provide a manually-operated labeller capable of eliminating the disadvantages described above.
According to the invention, there is provided a manually-operated labeller for dispensing labels from a carrier strip, comprising a casing from which a handle extends,a lever pivotably mounted on the casing and opposing the handle, a feed mechanism for feeding the carrier strip provided within the casing, a driving means for driving the feed mechanism provided on the lever, a printing device attached to the lever, and a label receiving member removably mounted on the casing, the label receiving member comprising a label receiving portion located to support a label being printed by the printing device, a support frame integral with the label receiving portion, a pressing member for pressing the labels onto the article provided on the support frame extending parallel with the label receiving segment so as to define a label forwarding space therebetween, and a carrier strip turnback edge provided on the label forwarding space side of the label receiving portion.
Thus, by virtue of the fact that the label receiving portion and the pressing member, which are the components of the labeller most often broken or damaged in use, are provided as part of a replaceable unit, these components can readily be replaced without relative positional adjustment.
The pressing member is preferably a pressing roller rotatably mounted on the support frame.
One end of the label receiving portion is preferably coupled to the support frame, whilst the other end is free. Such an arrangement permits the label receiving portion to bend slightly during a printing operation, thus improving the contact between the printing indicia and the label.
The label receiving member is preferably
mounted on the casing by means of a single
threaded member received in a threaded aperture in the support frame. Rapid removal and
replacement of the label support member is thus facilitated.
The pressing member is preferably positioned on the support frame so that it projects beyond the front end and lower edge of the casing.
Manipulation of the labeller in use about the
pressing member, for example the pressing roller,
is thereby improved.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a preferred
embodiment of a manually-operated labeller
according to the invention, the casing being partly
broken away;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a
portion of the labeller shown in Figure 1, showing
the printing device moving towards the label
receiving member;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the label
receiving member forming part of the labeller
shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a rear view of the label receiving
member shown in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a section through the label receiving
member on line V-V in Figure 4.
As shown in Figure 1, a casing 10 has a handle
11 extending from the rear end thereof and
incorporates a feed mechanism 20 and a printing
device 30 and is provided with a lever 40 which is
pivotably mounted on the casing to oppose the
handle 11.
The feed mechanism 20 comprises a feed drum
21 and a one-way clutch 22 arranged on the feed
drum 21. The one-way clutch 22 is driven by
pivotal movement of the lever 40. For this reason,
the portion of the lever 40 within the casing
comprises an actuating part 41 which is provided
with driving means such as, for example, a rack
gear 42 which engages with and drives the one
way clutch 22. The driving means is such that the
feed drum 21 does not rotate when the lever 40 is
pivoted toward the handle 11 and the feed drum
rotates through the specified angle when the lever
40 is operated in the direction away from the
handle 11.
The lever 40 is provided with a resetting means
such as, for example, resetting spring 43 by
means of which the lever 40 is urged away from
the handle 11.
The actuating part 41 of the lever 40 has the
printing device 30 mounted thereon and is
constructed so that the printing device 30 is
lowered when the lever 40 is pivoted toward the
handle 11 and the printing device 30 is raised and
reset when the lever 40 is reset.
The printing device 30 is similar to that
employed in conventional labellers. The printing
device is constructed so that the printing face 31
for printing is made up with the print types
arranged on the underside of the printing device
and the combination of types of the printing face
31 can be varied as required. An ink roll 32 is
provided for applying ink to the printing face 31
when the printing device 30 moves towards a label.
The front of the casing 10 at the opposte end to the handle 11 is provided with a label receiving member 50 detachably mounted thereon which comprises a support frame 52 which supports a pressing member such as, for example, pressing roller 51, a label receiving portion 53 and a label holding member 54 as shown in Figures 3 to 5.
The label receiving portion 53 is preferably made of a resilient material which extends parallel to the pressing roller 51 and of which one end is connected to the support frame 52 and the other end is free, and the label receiving portion is opposed to the pressing roller 51 across the label forwarding space 55 and the front edge 531 of the label receiving portion which faces the label forwarding space 55 acts as a turnback edge.
The label holding member 54 extends above the label forwarding space 55 from the support frame 52 towards the label receiving portion 53 and a label 70 separated from a carrier strip 60 is held at its upper surface.
The labels 70 are stuck in succession on the upper surface of the carrier strip 60 by means of an adhesive layer, and the carrier strip 60 is coiled in the form of roll and retained in a carrier strip holder 12 on the casing 10.
The carrier strip 60 is the same as for conventional labellers. As shown in Figure 1, the carrier strip is pulled out from said carrier strip holder 12, turned back at the turnback edge 531 of said label receiving portion 53 and fed as far as specified by rotation of the feed drum 21 while being engaged with the feed drum 21.
The label 70 is separated from the carrier strip for forwarding by its comparative rigidity when the carrier strip 60 is drawn around the dge 531 and the label is projected toward the lower part of the pressing roller 51 from the label forwarding space 55 as shown in Figure 1.
The label receiving member 50 is provided with fitting means for fitting it to the casing 10 and, in the illustrated embodiment, a threaded hole 56 is provided as the fitting means. The label receiving member is thus secured to the casing by means of a single threaded member passing through an aperture in the casing and being threadedly received in the aperture 56. Since the threaded hole 56 is located above and to one side of the pressing roller 51. the label receiving member can be attached to the wall of casing 10 with an interval from the end of the casing 10 and therefore the diameter of the thread can easily be increased and simultaneously the supporting strength of the casing for the label receiving member 50 can also be increased.
Though the label receiving portion 53 is coupled to the support frame 52 at only one end in the illustrated embodiment, the label receiving portion 53 can be coupled at both ends to the support frame 52.
The labeller of the present invention is provided with a label receiving member 50, which combines integrally the pressing member and the label receiving portion, and which is detachably mounted on the front end of the casing and therefore the following effects can be expected.
As opposed to the conventional construction in which the pressing roller is rotatably mounted on the front end of the casing, the pressing member such as the pressing roller, etc., is provided on the label receiving member 50 and therefore the diameter of the shaft of the pressing roller can be reduced; thus tilting and pivoting of the labeller around the pressing roller as the centre while sticking a label onto an article can be improved and moreover the protruding part of the pressing roller from the front end of the casing can be increased because the position of the pressing member, especially the pressing roller, is not limited by the pivoting position on the casing.
Since the pressing member and the label receiving portion are provided as a unit, these parts can be replaced without positional adjustment and accordingly the user can directly replace or repair at the working site the pressing member and the label receiving portion, which are most consumable, at the same time, and the service life of the labeller can be substantially prolonged.
