Abstract
Abstract of the Disclosure A manually-operated labeler in which a carrier strip onto which a number of labels are stuck in succession is turned back at a carrier strip turnback part and fed inter-mittently to separate and forward a label from the carrier strip and said separated and forwarded label is depressed onto an article by a depressing member provided ahead the carrier strip turnback part of the casing by virtue of a motion to stick said label onto the article and to pull the labeler, wherein said carrier strip turnback part and depressing member are remountably provided.
Description
Background of the Invention The present invention ralates to the manually-operated labeler which separates and forwards the label by turning back the carrier strip on which labels are stuck in succession at the carrier strip turnback part and intermittently feed the carrier strip and performs printing on the label before the carrier strip turnback part.
In case of this type of labeler, as described in the specification of the U.S. patent No.4,301,729, the label 1~ receiving part is often made of a synthetic resin to improve the printing effect. Most labelers of this type are made up by integrally molding the label receiving part and the casing through a molding process and accordingly the casing is also made of a synthetic resin.
However, such labeler is disadvantageous in that the label receiving part is prone to be broken or damaged since tl1e label rece:ivin(J part whicll is oEten depressed by the printing device does not have high streng-th and consequently it cannot he].p abandoning -the label due -to the breakaye or damaye clescribec~ above.
An object of -the presen-t i.nventi,on is to make a label recelving member as a sinyle independen-t part which can be remountably fitted i.n the casing of the labeler, thus permit-ting the use of -the labeler as is after replacement of the label receiving member if it is damaged or malfunctions.
Another object of the presen-t invention is to eliminate a work for adjustment of relative positions between the carrier strip turnback part and the depressing member at the ti.me of replacement of the label receiving member by combining the label receiving member with the depressing member as a unit of set.
Summary of the Invention The present invention provides a manually-operated labeler comprising a casing from which a handle is extended and :Eormed and to which a lever is pivoted opposing to said handle, a feed mechanism, which is located in said casing, such as, for example, a :Eeed drum provided wi-th a one-way clutch, a driving means for driving said feed mechanism provided in the ac-tuating part of said lever in said casing such as, for example, a rear gear which engages with said one-way clutch, a printing device fitted to the actuating part of said lever, and a label receiv-ing member which is remountably provided to be located at the opposite side to said handle in the -~ront part of said casing, said label receiving member comprising a label receiving segment located to oppose to an array of types of said printing device, a support frame provided integral with said label receiving segment to support at least one end of the label receiving segment, a depressing member such as, for example, a depression roller which is provided on said support frame to be in parallel with said label receiving segment, a label forwarding space formed be-tween said label receiving segment and said depressing member, and a carrier strip turnback part provided on the edge of said label receiving segment at the label forwarding space side, wherein the carrier strip onto which a number of labels are stuck is turned back at said carrier strip turnback part and is intermittently fed by driving said feed mechanism with said lever to separate said label from the carrier strip and forward it from the label forwarding space to a position under the depressing member, and said printing device performs printing on the label held on the label receiving seg-ment with the operation of said lever while said feed mechanism does not feed said feed tape.
In one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a manually-operable labeler which removes and prints upon labels sucessively stuck to a carrier strip, comprising a casing having a handle extending rearwardly thereof, a lever pivotally mounted to the casing opposed to the handle so as to be recipxocally pivotable toward and away from the handle, a carrier . -3 i9 strip feeding mechanism housed in said casing, engagable with the carrier strip and responsive to pivoting of the lever to feed a fixed length of carrier strip, the carrier strip remaining stationary during a portion of the reciprocating pivo-tal movement of the lever, a print-ing device mounted in the casing and responsive to pivot-ing of the lever while the carrier strip is stationary to move into downward engagement with one of the labels from the strip so as to perform printing thereon, and ,a label receiving member detachably mounted to the casing at a front bottom portion thereof, the label receiving member including a support frame, a label depressing member having an outer label engaging surface, mounted to the support frame, a resili.ent label receiving segment forward of the depressing member extending parallel : to the label engaging surface of the label depressing member, one end of the label receiving segment being integrally connected to the support Erame, the other end of the label receivi.ng segment comprising a ~ree end, the label receiving segment having a front edge defining a turnback part extending parallel to the label engaging surface of the'label depressing member, spaced from the label depressing member so as to define a label forwarding space of fixed dimensions -therebetween, and mean.s, at the support frame, for detachably mounting the label receiving member to the casing, the carrier strip feeding mechanism comprising means ~or feeding the carrier strip rearwardly along the label receiving segment and downwardly -3a-~i .

In a further aspect of the present invention, a labeler as described immediately above is provided which includes a holding member e~tending above the label forwarding space from the support frame toward and above the label receiving segment whereby the labels detached from the carrier strip are guided by the label holding member across the label forwarding space and beneath the label depressing member.

Detai]ed Description oE the Invention ~he following describes the labeler of the present invention by the accompanying drawings. In Figure 1~ the casing 10 which has the hanclle 11 formed toward the rear side and incor-porates the feed mechanism 20 and the printing device 30 and is fitted with the lever 40 which is pivo-ted to the casing to oppose to said handle 11.
Said feed mechanism 20 is provided with -the feed drum 2:L
and t.he one-way clutch 22 arranged on said feed drum 21, and said one-way clutch 22 is driven by pivotal movement of said lever 40. For -this reason, the moving part of said lever 40 included in -the casing is made as the actuating par-t 41 which is provided with the driving means such as, for example, rack gear 42 which engages with and drives the one-way clutch 22.
In the embodiment, the driving means is set so that the feed drum 21 does not rotate when the lever 40 is pivoted toward the handle 11 and the feed drum rota-tes to the specified angle when the lever 40 is operated in a direction to part from the handle 11 .
Said lever 40 is pro~ided with the resetting means such as, for e~ample, rese-ttincJ spring 43 by which the lever 40 is urged to be always kept away from the handle 11.
The actuating par-t of said lever 40 is mounted wi-th the printing device 30 and is constructed so that the printing 5~
device 30 is lowered when the lever 40 is turned toward the handle 11 and the printiny device 30 is raised and reset when the lever 40 is reset.
Said printing clevice 30 is made in a similar construct:ion to tha-t employed in conventional labelers. The printing dev:ice is cons-tructed so that the prin-ting face 31 for printing is made up with -the print types arranyed on the underside of the printin~ device and -the combination of types of the printing face 31 can be varied as required.
This printing face 31 of the array of print types is rub-bed by the ink roller 32 to app]y thereto the printing ink when the printing device 30 is lowered.
The front part of said casing ln at the opposite side of said handle 11 is remountably provided with the label receiving member 50 which is provided with the suppor-t frame 52 which supports the depressing member such as, for example, depression roller 51, the label receiving segment 53 and the label holding member 54 as shown in Figures 3 to 5. Said label receiving segment 53 is made of a resilient member whlch is ex-tended in parallel with said depression roller 51 and of which one end is connected to the support frame 52 and the other end is made as a free end, and the label receiviny segment is opposed to said depression roller 51 through the label forwarding space 55 and the front edge which faces this label forwarding space 55 is for,med as the turnback part 531.

Said labels 7n are stuck in succession on the upper surface of long carrier strip 60 wi.-th -the adhesive layer, and this carrier strip 60 is coiled in -the form of roll and retained in -the carrier strip holder 12 of sai.d casing 10.
Thls carrier strlp 60 is made as same as for the conven--tional labelers. As shown in Figure 1, the carrier strip is pulled out from said carrier strip holder 12, turned back at the turnback part 531 of said label receiving segment 53 and fed as far as specified by rotation of the feed drum 21 while being engaged with said feed drum 21.
Said label 70 is separated for forwarding for its hard-ness when the carrier strip 60 is fed and protrudecl-toward the lower part of the depressi.on roller 51 from said label forward-ing space 55 as shown in Figure 1.
Said label receiving member 50 is provided wi~h the fitting means for fitting it to said casing 10 and, in the em~odiment, the threaded hole 56 is provided as this fit-ting means.
~n the embodiment, since this threaded hole 56 is located slant above said depression roller 51, said label receiving member can be attached to the wall of casing 10 with an interval from -the end of the casing 10 and therefore the diameter of -the thread can be easily increased and simultaneously the supporting strength of the casing for the label receiving member 50 can also be increased.
Thouyh the label receiving segment 53 is coupled to the support frame 52 a-t its one end only in -this embodimen-t, this label receiviny segmen-t 53 can be coupled to -the support frame so that both ends of the label receiving segment are coupl.ed to the support frame 52.
The labeler of -the present i.nvention is provided with the iabe:L receiving member 50, which is made up by combining inte-gra:Lly the depressing member and -the label receiving segment to be remountahle on the fron-t part of the casing and therefore the following effects can be expected.
Differing from the construction -that the depression roller is pivoted at the front end of the casing as in the conven-tional labelers, the depression members such as the depression rol.ler, etc. are provided on the label receiving member 50 and therefore the diameter of the shaft of the depression roller can be reduced; thus the tilti.ng and pivoting performance of -the labeler around the depression roller as the center when in sticking a label onto,an article can be improved and moreover the protruding part of the depression roller from the front end of the casing can be increased because the position of the depressing member, especially the depression roller is not limlted by the pivoting position on the casing.
Since the depressi,ng member and the label receiving segment are employed as a set, these par-ts can be replaced without positional adjustment of these par-ts and accordingly the user can directly replace or repair at the working site the depres-sing member and the label receivi,ng segment, which are mos-t consùmable, at the same time, and the sexvice life of the labeler can be substantially prolonged.
In case of this type of labeler, as described in the specification of the U.S. patent No.4,301,729, the label 1~ receiving part is often made of a synthetic resin to improve the printing effect. Most labelers of this type are made up by integrally molding the label receiving part and the casing through a molding process and accordingly the casing is also made of a synthetic resin.

Summary of the Invention The present invention provides a manually-operated labeler comprising a casing from which a handle is extended and :Eormed and to which a lever is pivoted opposing to said handle, a feed mechanism, which is located in said casing, such as, for example, a :Eeed drum provided wi-th a one-way clutch, a driving means for driving said feed mechanism provided in the ac-tuating part of said lever in said casing such as, for example, a rear gear which engages with said one-way clutch, a printing device fitted to the actuating part of said lever, and a label receiv-ing member which is remountably provided to be located at the opposite side to said handle in the -~ront part of said casing, said label receiving member comprising a label receiving segment located to oppose to an array of types of said printing device, a support frame provided integral with said label receiving segment to support at least one end of the label receiving segment, a depressing member such as, for example, a depression roller which is provided on said support frame to be in parallel with said label receiving segment, a label forwarding space formed be-tween said label receiving segment and said depressing member, and a carrier strip turnback part provided on the edge of said label receiving segment at the label forwarding space side, wherein the carrier strip onto which a number of labels are stuck is turned back at said carrier strip turnback part and is intermittently fed by driving said feed mechanism with said lever to separate said label from the carrier strip and forward it from the label forwarding space to a position under the depressing member, and said printing device performs printing on the label held on the label receiving seg-ment with the operation of said lever while said feed mechanism does not feed said feed tape.

In a further aspect of the present invention, a labeler as described immediately above is provided which includes a holding member e~tending above the label forwarding space from the support frame toward and above the label receiving segment whereby the labels detached from the carrier strip are guided by the label holding member across the label forwarding space and beneath the label depressing member.

Detai]ed Description oE the Invention ~he following describes the labeler of the present invention by the accompanying drawings. In Figure 1~ the casing 10 which has the hanclle 11 formed toward the rear side and incor-porates the feed mechanism 20 and the printing device 30 and is fitted with the lever 40 which is pivo-ted to the casing to oppose to said handle 11.
Said feed mechanism 20 is provided with -the feed drum 2:L
and t.he one-way clutch 22 arranged on said feed drum 21, and said one-way clutch 22 is driven by pivotal movement of said lever 40. For -this reason, the moving part of said lever 40 included in -the casing is made as the actuating par-t 41 which is provided with the driving means such as, for example, rack gear 42 which engages with and drives the one-way clutch 22.
In the embodiment, the driving means is set so that the feed drum 21 does not rotate when the lever 40 is pivoted toward the handle 11 and the feed drum rota-tes to the specified angle when the lever 40 is operated in a direction to part from the handle 11 .
Said lever 40 is pro~ided with the resetting means such as, for e~ample, rese-ttincJ spring 43 by which the lever 40 is urged to be always kept away from the handle 11.
The actuating par-t of said lever 40 is mounted wi-th the printing device 30 and is constructed so that the printing 5~
device 30 is lowered when the lever 40 is turned toward the handle 11 and the printiny device 30 is raised and reset when the lever 40 is reset.
Said printing clevice 30 is made in a similar construct:ion to tha-t employed in conventional labelers. The printing dev:ice is cons-tructed so that the prin-ting face 31 for printing is made up with -the print types arranyed on the underside of the printin~ device and -the combination of types of the printing face 31 can be varied as required.
This printing face 31 of the array of print types is rub-bed by the ink roller 32 to app]y thereto the printing ink when the printing device 30 is lowered.
The front part of said casing ln at the opposite side of said handle 11 is remountably provided with the label receiving member 50 which is provided with the suppor-t frame 52 which supports the depressing member such as, for example, depression roller 51, the label receiving segment 53 and the label holding member 54 as shown in Figures 3 to 5. Said label receiving segment 53 is made of a resilient member whlch is ex-tended in parallel with said depression roller 51 and of which one end is connected to the support frame 52 and the other end is made as a free end, and the label receiviny segment is opposed to said depression roller 51 through the label forwarding space 55 and the front edge which faces this label forwarding space 55 is for,med as the turnback part 531.
Said label holdiny member 54 is extended above said label forwarding space 55 from said support frame 52 -to the label ~ 5 -S~
receiving segment 53 ancl the label 70 separatecl from the carrier s-trip 60 is held at its upper surface.
Said labels 7n are stuck in succession on the upper surface of long carrier strip 60 wi.-th -the adhesive layer, and this carrier strip 60 is coiled in -the form of roll and retained in -the carrier strip holder 12 of sai.d casing 10.
Thls carrier strlp 60 is made as same as for the conven--tional labelers. As shown in Figure 1, the carrier strip is pulled out from said carrier strip holder 12, turned back at the turnback part 531 of said label receiving segment 53 and fed as far as specified by rotation of the feed drum 21 while being engaged with said feed drum 21.
Said label 70 is separated for forwarding for its hard-ness when the carrier strip 60 is fed and protrudecl-toward the lower part of the depressi.on roller 51 from said label forward-ing space 55 as shown in Figure 1.
Said label receiving member 50 is provided wi~h the fitting means for fitting it to said casing 10 and, in the em~odiment, the threaded hole 56 is provided as this fit-ting means.
~n the embodiment, since this threaded hole 56 is located slant above said depression roller 51, said label receiving member can be attached to the wall of casing 10 with an interval from -the end of the casing 10 and therefore the diameter of -the thread can be easily increased and simultaneously the supporting strength of the casing for the label receiving member 50 can also be increased.
Thouyh the label receiving segment 53 is coupled to the support frame 52 a-t its one end only in -this embodimen-t, this label receiviny segmen-t 53 can be coupled to -the support frame so that both ends of the label receiving segment are coupl.ed to the support frame 52.
The labeler of -the present i.nvention is provided with the iabe:L receiving member 50, which is made up by combining inte-gra:Lly the depressing member and -the label receiving segment to be remountahle on the fron-t part of the casing and therefore the following effects can be expected.
Differing from the construction -that the depression roller is pivoted at the front end of the casing as in the conven-tional labelers, the depression members such as the depression rol.ler, etc. are provided on the label receiving member 50 and therefore the diameter of the shaft of the depression roller can be reduced; thus the tilti.ng and pivoting performance of -the labeler around the depression roller as the center when in sticking a label onto,an article can be improved and moreover the protruding part of the depression roller from the front end of the casing can be increased because the position of the depressing member, especially the depression roller is not limlted by the pivoting position on the casing.
Since the depressi,ng member and the label receiving segment are employed as a set, these par-ts can be replaced without positional adjustment of these par-ts and accordingly the user can directly replace or repair at the working site the depres-sing member and the label receivi,ng segment, which are mos-t consùmable, at the same time, and the sexvice life of the labeler can be substantially prolonged.
Claims (8)
1. A manually-operable labeler which removes and prints upon labels successively stuck to a carrier strip, comprising:
a) a casing having a handle extending rearwardly thereof;
b) a lever pivotally mounted to said casing opposed to said handle so as to be reciprocally pivotable toward and away from said handle;
c) a carrier strip feeding mechanism housed in said casing, engagable with the carrier strip and responsive to pivoting of said lever to feed a fixed length of carrier strip, said carrier strip remaining stationary during a por-tion of the reciprocating pivotal movement of said lever;
d) a printing device mounted in said casing and responsive to pivoting of said lever while said carrier strip is stationary to move into downward engagement with one of the labels from the strip so as to perform printing thereon;
and e) a label receiving member detachably mounted to said casing at a front bottom portion thereof, said label receiving member including;
1) a support frame;
2) a label depressing member having an outer label engaging surface, mounted to said support frame;
3) a resilient label receiving segment forward of said depressing member extending parallel to the label engaging surface of said label depressing member, one end of said label receiving segment being integrally connected to said support frame, the other end of said label receiving segment comprising a free end, said label receiving segment having a front edge defining a turnback part extending parallel to the label engaging surface of said label depressing member, spaced from said label depressing member so as to define a label forwarding space of fixed dimensions therebetween, and 4) means, at said support frame, for de-tachably mounting said label receiving member to said casing;
said carrier strip feeding mechanism com-prising means for feeding the carrier strip rearwardly along said label receiving segment and downwardly across said turnback part such that the labels are detached from the carrier strip at said turnback part.

3) a resilient label receiving segment forward of said depressing member extending parallel to the label engaging surface of said label depressing member, one end of said label receiving segment being integrally connected to said support frame, the other end of said label receiving segment comprising a free end, said label receiving segment having a front edge defining a turnback part extending parallel to the label engaging surface of said label depressing member, spaced from said label depressing member so as to define a label forwarding space of fixed dimensions therebetween, and 4) means, at said support frame, for de-tachably mounting said label receiving member to said casing;
said carrier strip feeding mechanism com-prising means for feeding the carrier strip rearwardly along said label receiving segment and downwardly across said turnback part such that the labels are detached from the carrier strip at said turnback part.
2. A labeler as in claim 1, wherein said label receiving member includes a label holding member ex-tending above said label forwarding space from said support frame toward and above said label receiving segment and the labels detached from the carrier strip are guided by said label holding member across said label forwarding space and beneath said label depressing members.
3. A labeler as in claim 1, wherein said label depressing member comprises a depression roller having an axis of rotation which extends parallel to said turnback part.
4. A labeler as in claim 2, wherein said label depressing member comprises a depression roller having an axis of rotation which extends parallel to said turnback part.
5. A labeler as in claim 1, wherein said support frame has a threaded hole, said detachably mounting means comprising a threaded member threadedly en-gagable with said threaded hole.
6. A labeler as in claim 2, wherein said support frame has a threaded hole, said detachably mounting means comprising a threaded member threadedly en-gagable with said threaded hole.
7. A labeler as in claim 4 or 6, wherein said support frame includes a horizontal portion above said depression roller, a vertical portion extending integrally downward from said horizontal portion rear-ward of said depression roller, said label holding member extending generally horizontally, integrally from the bottom edge of said vertical portion, said detachably mounting means being located above and slightly rearward of the axis of rotation of said de-pression roller.
8. A labeler as in claims 5 or 6, wherein said casing comprises two separable front casing side portions on opposite sides of said label receiving member removably joined to opposite ends of said threaded member, said casing being formed of synthetic resin.
