Abstract

The invention relates to a gap control roll for pipe pass stands in an installation for the longitudinal seam welding of pipes, said roll having a gap-entering annular ridge. To reduce wear on the ridge the invention offers a construction in which wear-resistant ridge ring or rings (4) are mounted on an outer carrier ring (3) which in turn is rotatably supported on an inner mounting ring (2) secured to the roll (1). The roll (1) is usually in two halves with the inner ring (2) therebetween, whereby the outer ring (3) is received in annular groove or recess (9) formed by the halves and the inner ring (2). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Sword roll for split pipe pass stands The invention relates to a sword roll for split pipe pass stands in an installation for the longitudinal seam welding of pipes.
Heretofore sword rolls have been used in which swords were tightly fitted to the roll body or pass. The load conditions on swords so mounted are such that the swords were subject to a high degree of wear and frequently broke loose.
Swords have also been used which, while rubbing on the rolling material, followed a differential movement to the roll pass, resulting in wear on the roll and the sword ring, which was further intensified through flushedin rolling scale. The consumption of sword material and rolls was correspondingly high, since re-working is only possible to a limited extent.
We have found that a substantial amount of this wear can be avoided by movably mounting the sword ring on the roll using a carrier ring. According to the present invention a sword roll for split pipe pass stands comprises a roll pass; an inner mounting ring attached to the roll pass; and an outer carrier ring rotatably mounted about the inner ring, the outer ring having at least one sword ring removably fastened thereto. Normally, the roll pass comprises two halves, the inner ring being arranged between the pass halves. The sword ring mounting embodied in the present invention reduces the need for re-working and increases the durability of the rolls and swords.
In order to prevent the ingress of rolling scale, preferred embodiments of the invention include seals between the outer ring and the roll body and/or between the inner and outer rings. The latter arrangement is particularly desirable when bearing rollers are provided between the rings to facilitate relative motion therebetween.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanying drawing which shows a cross-section through a peripheral portion of a sword roll.
In the drawing two roll pass halves 1 are connected with a central portion 2, which serves as an inner mounting ring. In the interstice or aperture 9 defined by the inner ring 2 and the two pass halves an outer carrier ring 3 is received on both sides of which are mounted sword rings 4, consisting of high-strength or highly wear-resistant material. Between the mounting ring 2 and the outer ring 3, bearing rollers 6 are arranged, facilitating rotation of the carrier ring 3 with the sword rings 4 over the inner mounting ring 2. To avoid the intrusion of scale, the carrier ring 3 is provided on both sides with seals 5 and the interstice between inner mounting ring 2 and outer carrier ring 3 is likewise provided on both sides with seals 7 for the protection of the bearing rollers 6. An inlet 8 is provided in the carrier ring 3 for the introduction of lubricant thereto.
In operation of the sword roll in the split pipe pass stand, the sword ring rolls off on the multiple roll bearing, so that in contrast to the fixed sword mounting, the wear is substantially reduced.
