Abstract

210,689. Withers, J. S., (Roth Akt.-Ges. Eisengiessereien und Maschinenfabriken, J., (vorm. Berlin-Perleberger Maschinenfabrilc und Eisengiesserei Akt.-Ges. und Eisengiesserei und Maschinenfabrik J. Roth Akt.-Ges.). May 29, 1923. Stationary mould machines; pressing plungers and dies; delivery; feeding.-A machine for moulding electric insulators and articles having sharp edges and recesses comprises a mould containing a lower die formed of several telescopic parts positioned by a cam drum through rods disposed parallel to the drum axis, an upper die having corresponding parts, and a filling hopper co-operating therewith. The machine frame comprises parallel plates 4, 5, 6 carried by tubular rods 3 mounted on a base 1, the plates 4, 5 supporting trunnions 9, 10 of a drum 11 carrying a number of cam tracks 14 - - 18 from which the various parts of the machine are driven. The mould comprises an outer member guided by brackets 25 and a lower die comprising a number of telescoping sections 117, 120, 123, Fig. 5, corresponding in configuration to the desired article. The sections are operated through sleeves 129, 131 &c. connected by cross bars 132 &c. to rods 133 &c. which have projections engaging the cam tracks. The upper die 42 is carried by a bearing 41, sliding on a pillar 40 and operated through links 43, 28, 33 from the cam drum, and is pressed downwards by a plate 52 supported on a sliding bearing 51 actuated by links 46, 47, 49. The link 46 is provided with a pawl 59 which is engaged by the rim 56 of a button 55 on a rod 53 also operated from a cam on the drum. The concentric sleeve members 26 constituting the lower die are supported during the compression by means of a slide 63 mounted in a base 61 and moved into position by a lever 66 and rod 67 actuated from another cam race. The filling member 69, Fig. 10, is reciprocated between the hopper 70 and the mould by links and levers 77, 80, 82, and is supported so as to rise with the outer member 24 on a bracket 71 so that the mould is filled by moving the members 24, 69 upwards, and the sleeve members downwards, the mould thus being charged with great velocity owing to the inertia of the material. The inside of filling member has a vaulted roof and walls 210, 208 and only a small filling opening 211, so that it is only charged loosely with material from the hopper. The front 214 of the member may be adapted to form a pusher to remove the moulded article over a guide 85 on to a conveyer 86. The guide 85 is provided with perforations through which compressed air may 'be blown so as to tilt the moulded article on to the conveyer. Smooth ejection of the moulded article without making the die parts conical is obtained by withdrawing the most widely projecting parts of the dies first until they are flush with the adjacent parts. The concentric die parts are connected with their driving members by means of solder and are formed alternately of oxidizable and non- oxidizable materials so as to avoid friction. A modified construction of mould for forming articles with annular recesses is shown in Fig. 15 in which an annular die member 171 carries an endless hedical spring 172 which is compressed against an abutment 173 to form the required recess. A further modification for moulding thin walled tubular articles is shown in Fig. 19, in which an outer tubular casing 180 slides on a sleeve 181 surrounding a mandrel 182. The upper part of the mould comprises a die 197 surrounded by a casing 185 having projections 186 on which slide adjustable plates 187, 188 carrying thin steel plates 189, 190 having rectangular apertures at their ends which form the sides of the mould. The plates 187, 188 are forced inwards by the springs 193, 194 and are separated bv the depending arms 200 of a bail 199 sliding on the upper die member 197.
