Abstract
An edge rail for use where tiles 2 meet at right angles, e.g. on a step 1 includes a first flange 31 having apertures which is embedded in mortar 5; a second flange 32 at right angles thereto; and a third flange on the free edge of the second flange, the third flange being parallel to but on the opposite to, the first flange. The upper surface of the third flange either has an anti-slip roughened surface or a separate anti-slip member 4. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Edge rail for capping ceramic tiles on a step or the like
The present invention relates to an edge rail for capping ceramic tiles on a step or the like, which rail comprises a thin securing shank provided with apertures and an end shank disposed at right angles thereto.
Edge rails having dissimilar shanks are known with a thin securing shank less than 1 .5mm thick and even when ceramic tiles are being laid in accordance with the thin-bed process, such securing shank may be accommodated in the available layer height so that no increase in height of the tile structure results from inserting the edge rail. In this case, the securing shank is provided with apertures through which adhesive or mortar may penetrate. The end shank, which is disposed at right angles to the securing shank is generally of a slightly thicker construction. Its height corresponds substantially to the height of a conventional ceramic tile. Edge cappings may be formed with such edge rails, even, for example, on steps in rooms or on flights of stairs.
By installing such a rail appropriately on the step edge, the tiles which are at right angles to each other may be brought up to this rail so that the end edges are covered by the rail.
There is always some risk of slipping on tile coatings made of ceramic material. The object of the invention is to combine edge rails of the above-mentioned type with slip-preventive profiles.
According to the present invention there is provided an edge rail for capping ceramic tiles on a step or the like, which rail comprises a thin securing shank, provided with apertures, and an end shank disposed at right angles thereto, in which a further shank is formed on the end shank so as to be offset in an outwardly parallel manner in the plane of the securing shank, and in which the upper surface of the further shank is designed so as to prevent slipping or being provided with a slip-preventive coating.
In a simple manner, such a rail may be of a Zshaped construction, the upper surface of the externally formed-on shank being profiled so as to prevent slipping.
According to one preferred embodiment, an externally formed-on shank is proposed having one or a plurality of upwardly open, tapered chambers, in which chambers, one or a plurality of upwardly open, tapered chambers, in which chambers, one or a plurality of slip-preventive profiles are heid interspersed by means of webs on their underneath side. In order to improve the clamping of such a rail with mortar or adhesive, and to reduce the amount of material required for such profiles, which are frequently made of brass, a downwardly open spacer chamber is provided between the chambers which accommodate the profile webs, the external faces of said spacer chamber being profiled preferably wholly or partially.
A plastics profile is preferably to be used having a profiled upper surface and one or more hollow, flexible, flanged webs on the underneath side.
An edge rail of this type according to the invention for capping ceramic tiles on a step may be easily accommodated in all the contact layers which are commonly used for securing tiles. In addition to its capping function, the rail according to the invention presents a safety means for eliminating the risk of slipping in the edge region of a step designed in the described manner.
The present invention will be further illustrated by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fundamental, sectional view of the edge region of a tiled step where an edge rail has been inserted;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a section through the rail in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of one further embodiment of an edge rail.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, an edge rail, generally referenced 3, is inserted in the edge region on the rough step 1 which has been cast, for example, from concrete. A ceramic tile 2 is mounted on the edge rail above and a further ceramic tile 2 is also brought towards the edge rail in a vertical direction from underneath. In this embodiment of a step, the edge rail 3 and the tiles 2 are laid in accordance with the so-called thinbed process, whereby a relatively thin contact layer 5 of mortar or an appropriate adhesive is applied to secure them on the step 1. The securing shank 31, which is less than 1.5mm thick, is inserted into the contact layer 5. The adhesive which has penetrated the holes 311 joins the underneath side of the tile 2 to the base in this region.
The end shank 32, which is kept substantially the same thickness, lies at right angles to the securing shank 31. In its upper region 33, the shank 32 is wider towards the inside. With its height staggered relative to the securing shank 31, a further shank 34 is formed on the end shank 32 so as to extend outwardly and to serve to accommodate a slip-preventive plastics material profile 4.
Two upwardly open, tapered, chambers 35 are provided on the shank 34 and accommodate hollow, flexible, flanged webs which are formed on the underneath side of the plastics profile 4 in accordance with their interspersing. The profile 4, which is provided with a slip-preventive surface 42, is supported on the upper surface of the shank 34. Two inwardly rounded-off webs 36, which lie one opposite the other, are formed on the open end of the chambers 35, which are constructed so as to be spaced one from the other, and these webs 36 form a tapered portion and facilitate the insertion of the flanged webs 41.
The two chambers 35 are spaced one from the other. A downwardly open spacer chamber 37 is provided between these two chambers and, because of this spacer chamber 37, the amount of material required for the shank 34 is substantially reduced. The external faces 38 are profiled with clamping elements, to which mortar or an adhesive adheres more satisfactorily.
In principle, such an outwardly extending shank can also only have one single chamber.
However, it is also possible to provide four chambers n order to widen this shank and the appropriate, slip-preventive layer, and to use two plastics profiles of identical widths for covering purposes.
In the case of steps which are open at the front end, such as, for example, on flights of stairs, it is possible to intersperse additional cover caps or the like on the edge rails. Such caps, may for example, be inserted into the front ends of the hollow, flanged webs by means of formed-on pins.
Fig. 3 shows a very simple edge rail of the type according to the invention. This rail 3' is substantially of a Z-shaped design having a securing shank 31' and an end shank 32'. In turn, additional shanks 34' is formed-on so as to extend outwardly, and the surface 341' of the shank 34' is designed so as to prevent slipping.
Claims (7)
1. An edge rail for capping ceramic tiles on a step or the like, which rail comprises a thin securing shank, provided with apertures and an end shank disposed at right angles thereto, in which a further shank is formed on the end shank so as to be offset in an outwardly parallel manner in the plane of the securing shank and in which the upper surface of the further shank is designed so as to prevent slipping or being provided with a slip-preventive coating.
2. An edge rail as claimed in claim 1, in which the rail is of a substantially Z-shaped design, the upper surface of the externally formed-on shank being profiled so as to prevent slipping.
3. An edge rail as claimed in claim 1, in which the externally formed-on shank is provided with one or more upwardly open, tapered chambers, in which one or more slip-preventive profiles are kept interspersed by means of webs on their underneath side.
4. An edge rail as claimed in claim 3, in which two inwardly rounded-off webs, which lie one opposite the other, are formed on the open end of the chambers which are constructed so as to be spaced one from the other.
5. An edge rail as claimed in claim 4, in which a downwardly open spacer chamber is provided between the chambers which accommodate profiled webs, the external faces of said spacer chamber being profiled preferably wholly or partially so as to be clamped with mortar or adhesive.
6. An edge rail as claimed in claim 3, in which the slip-preventive profile is formed of a plastics material, having a profiled upper end and one or more hollow, flexible, flanged webs on its underneath side.
7. An edge rail for capping ceramic tiles on a step or the like, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in
Figs. 1 and 2, or Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings.
