Benches, work; bench stops.-A carpenter's bench comprises the combination of a supporting under frame. adapted to be readily taken to pieces with a bench top of the type provided with a sunken part forming a tool trough and with a number of aligned holes for bench stops along the top surface and one or more edges and with one or more vices also provided with holes for bench stops in the top and side edges. The supporting under frame consists of two end frames connected together by longitudinal members and fastening devices such as wedges. The top of the bench is formed of longitudinal boards 14 and a thinner intermediate board 15 so as to provide the usual trough 16 for nails, &c. End members 13 are connected to the boards 14 by bolts 23, similar bolts 21 connecting other frame members 17 which carry clamping vices 19. Aligned holes 24, preferably sloping, are provided along the top faces of frame members 12 along the edges of the bench top to receive bench stops 30 adapted to coact with other stops received in aligned holes 28 in other vices 27 for holding a piece of work 43 in position, as shown in Fig. 1. strips 25 suitably attached beneath the frame members 12 are provided with other holes 26 opening to the side to receive bench stops co-acting with other stops received in aligned openings 29 in the side edges of the vices, whereby a piece of work 43a may be gripped in the position shown in Fig. 3. The vices 27 comprise frame members 31, 32, 33, 34, Fig. 6. The member 31 has a tongue 35 and groove 38 guided respectively in a groove- 36 and along a ridge 37 on the stepped end of the bench top board 14, and is connected to the member 32 by a guide strip 39 sliding against a strip 40 fixed beneath the end members 13. The vice screw 41 is rotatably secured in the member 32 by means of a key piece having a semi-circular notched end engaging a peripheral groove in the stem of the screw. The supporting framework, Fig. 4, is formed of end frames comprising upper and lower members 49, 50 connected by uprights 51, 52, 53, and cross members 56 secured detachably to the uprights 51, 52 by wedges 58. Notches 54, 55, formed reversely in the two framework members 49 engage the bench top frame members 12, 40 and prevent sideways movement of the bench top when in position, lateral displacement being prevented by two battens 59.
