Abstract

A cathode for use in electrolytic refining of copper and of the kind comprising: a stainless steel hanger bar having end portions to rest on supports, a flat stainless steel starter sheet welded to the bar to be suspended thereby, a copper cladding which envelopes the bar and part of the starter sheet, and masking means on the side edges of the sheet, is characterised in that the end portions 13A are so shaped as to rest on the supports 5 in line contact therewith. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cathode for use in the electrolytic refining of copper This invention is directed to an improvement in our earlier invention subject of our United Kingdom Patent Application No. 8002075 hereinafter referred to as the "Parent Invention".
The cathode subject of the parent invention has, in extensive practical application, proved itself to be highly effective; however, in some instances it has been found that the flat undersurface of the hanger bar end portions (marked 13 in the drawings of the parent specification) which are adapted to rest on support and electrical contact bars, do not always seat on those bars in a manner ensuring completely effective electrical transmission.
Thus, the object of this invention is to overcome the stated shortcoming by increasing the bearing pressure intensity between the hanger bar end portions and the contact bars.
To this end, the invention provides a modification of the parent invention, which consists in so shaping said end portions that their undersides are substantially in line contact with said contact bars.
In the drawings herewith, Fig. 1 repeats the substance of Fig. 3 of the drawings of the parent invention.
Figs. 2 to 4 show three alternative forms of the present invention. Each of these figures may be regarded as a section (on an enlarged scale) taken on line A-A in Fig. 1.
Fig. 2 substantial line-contact is established between the hanger-bar end 1 3A and the contact bar (indicated at 5) by making the underside of end 1 3A arcuate as indicated at 6.
In Fig. 3 the same purpose is achieved by making the lower portion of the end 1 3B triangular as shown at 7.
Fig. 4 shows an end 1 3C which makes double line-contact by way of knife-edge flanges 8 and 9.
1. A cathode for use in the electrolytic refining of copper, comprising: a stainless steel hanger bar having end portions adapted to rest upon supports and electrical contacts, a flat stainless steel starter sheet welded by its upper edge to said undersurface between said end portions and so as to extend perpendicularly from said undersurface, a copper cladding which envelopes said bar and at least the marginal upper portion of said sheet by which it is welded to said under surface, and means to mask at least the upright side edges of said sheet: characterised, in that said end portions are so shaped as to rest upon said supports in line contact therewith.
characterised, in that said end portions are so shaped as to rest upon said supports in line contact therewith.
2. A cathode according to claim 1 wherein said end portions have arcuate surfaces by which said end portions rest on said supports.
3. A cathode according to claim 1 wherein said end portions are of triangular cross-sectional shape.
4. A cathode according to claim 1 wherein said end portions each include a pair of flanges having knife-edges by which said end portions rest on said supports.
5. A cathode for use in the electrolytic refining of copper substantially as herein described with reference to any one of Figs. 2 to 4 of the drawings herewith.
