Abstract
A housing for a rolling mill of the type having either two pairs of vertical rolls separated by a pair of horizontal rolls or two pairs of horizontal rolls separated by a pair of vertical rolls is made in several parts which are removably secured together to ease manufacturing and transport problems. The housing consists of two spaced apart structures 8, 16 each of which supports a pair of rolls and which has a pair of beams or columns. The ends of the beams or columns are removably secured together by capping members 30, 32 to form a frame for supporting the other pair of rolls. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Construction of a housing for a rolling mill
This invention relates to a housing for a rolling mill of the type having either two pairs of vertical rolls separated by a pair of horizontal rolls or two pairs of horizontal rolls separated by a pair of vertical rolls.
A rolling mill usually employs a fairly massive housing for supporting the rolls and for accommodating the various forces which are set up when metal is rolled between the rolls. In the case of a rolling mill having a pair of horizontal rolls, these rolls are usually supported at their ends in bearing chock assemblies which in turn are supported in a pair of spaced apart vertical housings each of which defines a window for receiving the bearing chock assemblies. In the case of a rolling mill having a pair of vertical rolls, these rolls are supported at their ends in bearing chock assemblies and these assemblies are supported in upper and lower horizontally disposed housings which define windows for receiving the bearing chock assemblies.
In recent years, a type of mill known as a "Triplet" mill has been proposed in which two pairs of vertical rolls are positioned close together but separated by a pair of horizontal rolls. In this type of mill it is important that the rolls are as close together as possible and, for this reason, it is not permissible for three separate mill stands, i.e.
two vertical mills and a horizontal mill to be positioned side-by-side. A one-piece casting which serves as a housing for all of the rolls is difficult to cast and also there are problems with transportation, since such a structure is inevitably massive. For "Triplet" mills it may well be that it is impossible to cast and transport a one-piece housing.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a housing which overcomes these difficulties.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, a housing for a rolling mill of the type having two pairs of vertical rolls separated by a pair of horizontal rolls comprises two spaced apart structures, each providing support for one of said pair of vertical rolls, and each having a pair of spaced apart vertical columns integral therewith, and an upper and a lower capping member removably secured to the top and bottom respectively of each column to form therewith closed housings for supporting said pair of horizontal rolls.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, a housing for a rolling mill of the type having two pairs of horizontal rolls separated by a pair of vertical rolls comprises two spaced apart structures, each providing support for one of said pairs of horizontal rolls, and each having a pair of spaced apart horizontal bars integral therewith, and pair of capping members removably secured to the ends of said bars to form therewith closed
housings for supporting said pair of vertical rolls.
Each of said two structures is of a size which means that it can readily be cast and, when the capping members are removed, each of the two structures can be transported separately and the housing erected on site by connecting the capping members to the columns or bars.
The housing so formed can be mounted on a separate bed plate, if so required.
By arranging for the columns or bars of the housings for supporting the one pair of rolls to be integral with the structures which provide support for the other pair of rolls, then the overall size of the housing is reduced as much as possible consistent with the desire to have the sets of rolls as close together as possible.
In order that theinvention may be more readily understood, it will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a housing in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the housing with the parts separated from one another.
A "Triplet" rolling mill has two pairs of vertical rolls arranged to form a common passline and a pair of horizontal rolls located between the pairs of vertical rolls and on the same passline. The first pair of vertical rolls are supported at their ends in bearing chock assemblies and the chock assemblies are mounted in the windows 2 of a pair of upper and lower closed horizontal housings 4 and 6. The housings 4, 6 form part of a cast structure 8 which includes vertical supports 10 which keep the housings 4, 6 in spaced apart vertical relation. The housings 4, 6 may have an opening 12 through one end thereof by which screws (not shown) can pass to displace the vertical rolls within the windows 2.The second pair of vertical rolls are similarly supported in cast structure 1 6 which provides upper and lower horizontal closed frames 18, 20 which are kept in vertical spaced relation by means of supports 22.
Each of the structures 8, 1 6 includes a pair of integral columns 24 which are arranged vertically and which extend above the upper horizontal
housings and below the lower horizontal housings.
An upper capping member 30 is of substantially
H-form and is machined so as to fit on to the
upper ends of the four columns 24 and to be
removably secured thereto by means of bolts 31.
The capping member 30 provides a connection
between the upper ends of each pair of
corresponding columns and also a connection
between the two sets of columns. Similarly, a
lower capping member 32, also of substantially Hform, is machined and arranged to fit on the lower
ends of the columns and to be removably secured thereto by means of bolts. This lower capping
member forms a connection between each
corresponding pair of columns on the two
structures 8, 1 6 and also a connecting link
between the two sets of columns. In this way, the
vertical columns 24 and the upper and lower
capping members 30, 32 define a pair of closed
housings each defining a window 34 for receiving the bearing chock assemblies of the pair of horizontal trolls.
Since the columns 24 extend downwardly below the horizontal portions 20 of the housings, it is necessary for the structures 8, 1 6 to be removably secured to a pair of base plates 36, 38.
The housing structure according to the present invention thus has the advantage that the two structures 8, 1 6 can readily be manufactured separately from each other and transported to site and, similarly, the capping members can be manufactured and transported separately. On site the structures 8, 1 6 are secured to the base plates 36, 38 and the upper and lower capping members are secured to the columns 24.
