Abstract

The cord 1 has a helical part which is longitudinally extensible and two spaced clips 4, 5 one for attaching the cord to a hand-held tool and the other for securing to a support, eg scaffolding or operator's belt or wrist. The cord may include electric conductors.

Description

SPECIFICATION Retaining cord The present invention relates to a retaining cord for attachment to a tool, whether electrically powered or not, for holding by an operator.
When a workman in high, exposed locations, eg on ladders, gantries or pylons, drops a tool there is a substantial risk of damage to property and people beneath as well as to the tool itself; additionally the workman wastes time in retrieving the tool. A tool dropped by an underwater diver would probably be lost. Any straps or string attached to the tool and the support for limiting the fall of the tool can readily become tangled.
An object of the present invention is to provide a retaining cord which substantially overcomes these disadvantages.
According to the present invention, we provide a retaining cord for a hand tool comprising a flexible elongate member at least a substantial part of which is of a helical form longitudinally extensible when a force is applied in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the helix, and, integral with or connected to the elongate member at spaced positions along said helical part, means for attaching said cord to a tool and means for securing said cord to a support.
Thus, while a workman or diver uses the tool, the cord can take up the minimum required length, (which may involve some longitudinal extension from the minimum length of the cord) thereby reducing the risk of entanglement.
Additionally, the springiness of the cord acts to dissipate the kinetic energy of the tool thereby reducing the risk of the cord breaking and to damp lateral motion of the tool at the bottom of its fall, thereby also reducing the risk of entanglement.
Preferably, the means for attaching said cord to a hand tool and/or the means for securing said cord to a support comprises a clip or buckle or stud crimped on to the cord. Alternatively, at one or each position the flexible member may have a loop or twist integral with the flexible member.
Preferably, the flexible elongate member comprises a central reinforcing member, eg of steel, other suitable metal or a plastics material, eg the aromatic poiyamidematerial sold under the Registered Trademark "Kevlar", with a sheath of plastics material, eg polyvinyl chloride. - In one form of cord, the elongate member may also comprise two or more electric conductors enabling the cord to have the additional function of carrying power to the hand tool; in this case, the means for securing the cord to a support will be at intermediate position along the length of the cord.
According to the present invention we further provide a hand tool having, attached thereto, a retaining cord comprising a flexible elongate member at least a substantial part of which is of a helical form longitudinally extensible when a force is applied in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the helix, and, integral with or connected to the elongate member at spaced positions along said helical part, means by which said cord is attached to the hand tool and means for securing said cord to a support.
According to the invention, we additionally provide a kit of parts comprising a hand tool and a retaining cord, as described and claimed herein, for attachment to said hand tool.
A description is now given, by way of example only, reference being made to the accompanying drawing of a retaining cord.
The retaining cord 1 comprises a helically wound resilient steel wire 2 covered in a sheath 3 of polyvinyl chloride; a clip 4, 5 is located on cord 1 at each end of the helical part 6, so that one end of the cord 1 can be attached to the hand tool and the other end to a support, whether it be a fixed structure (eg. scaffolding or a ladder), or the operator's belt or wrist (eg by means of a wristband).
