Abstract

A reel-to-reel winder for a fishing reel comprises an elongate base (1) having mounted thereon at one end means to carry a fishing line spool (3), at an opposite end means to receive a fishing reel (4) of the type having a fixed spool (5) with reciprocating movement during winding of a line thereon, and intermediate its ends tensioning means (11, 12) through which the line (13) can be passed to tension the line as it is drawn from the spool (3) and wound on the reel (4). In this way, an even tension of a fresh line can be attained as it is wound onto the spool (5) of the reel (4). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Reel-to-reel winder for a fishing reel According to the present invention, there is provided a reel-to-reel winder for a fishing reel, the winder comprising an elongate base having mounted thereon at one end means to carry a fishing line spool, at an opposite end means to receive a fishing reel of the type having a fixed spool with reciprocating movement during winding of a line thereon, and intermediate its ends tensioning means through which the line can be passed to tension the line as it is drawn from the spool and wound on the reel.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic plan view of a winder according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a schematic side view of the winder shown in Figure 1.
The drawing shows a reel-to-reel winder for a fishing reel, the winder including an elongate base 1 having mounted thereon at one end means in the form of brackets 2 to carry a fishing line spool 3 as can be purchased when the fishing line on a reel becomes due for replacement. The reel 3 is rotatably mounted between the brackets 2.
At the opposite end of the base 1 means are provided to receive a fishing reel 4 of the type having a fixed spool 5 with reciprocating movement in the direction of the double arrow in Figure 2 during winding of a line thereon or unwinding of the line. The means to receive the fishing reel is shown schematically at 6 and takes advantage of the fact that a standard fishing reel has a threaded base 7 which is normally mounted on the end of a fishing rod. In the present case, the base 1 has means to receive the threaded base 7 and the reel 4 is tightened on the base 1 by means of a threaded collar 8. As is usual, the reel 4 includes a winder 9 and a rotating part including a bale arm 10 which carries the line over the outer flange of the spool 5 during winding and unwinding of the line as the spool 5 reciprocates during turning of the handle 9.
In order to provide an even tension of a fresh line as it is wound onto the spool 5, tensioning means, in the example shown in the form of hooks 11 and eyes 12 are provided on the base 1.
Accordingly, to wind a line 1 3 from the spool 3 to the spool 5, the line 1 3 is passed through the eye 12 and around the hooks 11 and then through the central eye 12 nearest the reel 4. As the handle 9 is turned, the bale arm 10 causes the line 13 to be drawn onto the spool 5 and the sinuous path which the line 1 3 takes through the eyes 12 and hooks 11 pre-tensions the line as it is run onto the spool 5. In order to adjust the tension, the line 13 may take a different path through the hooks and eyes than the one shown in the drawing and indeed the line 13 may by-pass one or more of the hooks 11.
The base 1 may be made of wood, rigid plastics material, a moulded alloy or, pressed metal.
It is also possible to adapt the base 1 so that an old line can be wound off the reel 4 and onto a spare spool. Various means can be used to achieve this, in particular, the base 1 can carry an extension carrying the parts required to wind the line off the spool 5. Alternatively, a rewinding attachment (not shown) can be attached at 6 on the base 1 and an empty commercial line holding spool can be mounted on a detachable vertical spindle (not shown) passing through a hole 14 in the base 1 between the brackets 2, the line passing from the rewinding attachment, which is coupled to the cranked winder 9, through the eyes 12.
1. A reel-to-reel winder for a fishing reel the winder comprising an elonage base having mounted thereon at one end means to carry a fishing line spool, at an opposite end means to receive a fishing reel of the type having a fixed spool with reciprocating movement during winding of a line thereon, and intermediate its ends tensioning means through which the line can be passed to tension the line as it is drawn from the spool and wound on the reel.
2. A winder as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said tensioning means comprises hooks and/or eyes providing a sinuous path for the line.
3. A winder as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said means to receive a fishing reel includes means to receive a threaded base of a reel, the reel being tightened on the base by means of a threaded collar.
4. A winder as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein said base is made of wood, rigid plastics material, a moulded alloy or pressed metal.
5. A winder as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, and comprising an extension carried by the base, said extension carrying parts required to wind a line off said fixed spool.
6. A reel-to-reel winder for a fishing reel substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
