Abstract
210,101. Shaw, H. S. Hele-. July 19, 1922. Filters; separating by gravity.-A filter comprises a pack of plates or sheets of paper or other material substantially impermeable to the fluid, at any rate, in the direction of flow, compressed between inlet and outlet end plates and so perforated that inlet and outlet tubes are formed within the pack, the liquid filtering between the sheets from the inlet tubes to the outlet tubes. Fig. 1 shows a filter formed of plates 8 compressed between end plates 7, 9. Liquid is passed by a pump 5 from a tank 2 through a pipe 6 to passages 23, formed in the end plate 7, Fig. 2, and communicating with the inlet tubes in the pack. The filtered liquid is collected from the outlet tubes in the pack by passages 25, in the plate 9, Fig. 5, and discharged through a pipe 10 to a tank 11. The plate 9 has also passages 27 communicating with the ends of the inlet tubes in the pack, so that separated matter can be flushed out when a valve 14 is opened. A tank 21 is provided for a washing fluid, which can, if desired be delivered through a bye-pass 19 to the outlet tubes in the pack and thus passed between the plates in the reverse direction. The plates may be of paper or other fibrous material, having a grain or matt surface or projections or raised borders formed by printing or embossing or by depositing and securing thereon any suitable substance. ' Mechanical means, such as screws or levers, or hydraulic pressure may be used to regulate the pressure between the heads and thus control the distance between the sheets. The filtered liquid may be in part allowed to escape at the edges of the plates. Conical plates may be used. Rods may be provided for pushing out from the inlet tubes in the pack solid matter, which is not removed by washing. Steam tubes may be provided in the filter if the liquid to be filtered is viscous. One of the Provisional Specifications describes the use of a pack of sheets for separating solid matter from a liquid as it flows with stream line motion between the sheets. Alternate sheets may be cut like stencils to provide the necessary channels. The solid matter is deposited in pockets from which it can be removed through holes in the plain sheets.
