Abstract

The inner 2 and outer skins are separated by spacer 6 which has slots 7 to accommodate upstanding ribs of inner skin 2. Spacer 6 may be attached to inner skin 2 or to purlin 1, e.g. by screws or rivets. The other flange of spacer 6 may also have slots to receive ribs of the outer skin. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION improvements in or relating to double-skin roofs or walls This invention relates to double-skin roof or wall panels for sheet-clad buildings.
Where buildings, such as agricultural or industrial buildings, are clad with sheet material it is frequently desirable to provide a double-skin roof or wall construction for insulation or anticondensation reasons. Where the sheet material is corrugated or castellated it is known to mount spacers (e.g. in the form of Z-shaped purlins) on the crests of the castellations or corrugations of the inner skin and then to-mount the outer skin on these spacers, with or without insulating material being inserted between the two skins. Sometimes insulating washers are used to prevent metal-tometal contact between the metal spacer and the inner or outer skins, where these are of sheet metal.
We have now devised a system for constructing a double-skin wall or roof panel, using a spacer to separate the two skins, which allows a more compact and convenient form of assembly than has hitherto proved possible. Further the system is structurally stronger than the known system of mounting spacers on the crests of underlying sheets of corrugated or castellated cladding material, since in the case of the invention there can be more contact area between the inner skin and the spacer.
This invention consists in a double-skin roof or wall panel for cladding buildings, which panel has an inner skin of corrugated or castellated sheet metal material, mounted on support purlins, and an outer skin mounted on spacers attached to the inner skin or purlins, characterised in that the spacers are provided with slots or recesses which fit over upstanding ribs of the inner skin.
Preferably the spacers are of Z-shaped section and the slots are cut as notches in the lower flange of the Z-shaped section.
Preferably the spaces between the upstanding ribs of the inner skin are much greater than the widths of the ribs themselves.
Preferably the spacer is a Z-shaped galvanised steel purlin.
The upper flange of the spacer may also have slots, if desired, to receive ribs of the outer skin.
The invention will be described in more detail by reference to the accompanying single figure of diagrammatic drawing which shows a perspective view of the construction of a roof panel according to the invention.
With reference to the drawing, the underlying purlin 1 supports the inner skin 2 of sheet metal having upstanding ribs 3 at regular intervals as shown. The spacer 4 is of generally Z-shaped section with its lower flange 5 being mounted on the inner skin 2 and its upper flange 6 being available to support the outer skin of the building (not shown). The spacer 4 has slots or recesses 7 cut therein to fit over the upstanding ribs 3 of the inner skin 2. The spacer may be fixed to the inner skin by known fixing means such as screws or rivets and the outer skin fixed to the spacer by similar means.
1. A double-skin roof or wall panel for cladding a building, which panel has an inner skin, of corrugated or castellated sheet metal material, mounted on support purlins, and an outer skin mounted on spacers which are attached to the inner skin or the purlins, characterized in that the spacers are provided with slots or recesses which fit over upstanding ribs of the inner skin.
2. A panel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the spacers are of Z-shaped section and the slots are cut, as notches, in the lower flange of the Zshaped section.
3. A panel as claimed in claims 1 or 2 in which the distances between the upstanding ribs of the inner skin are much greater than the widths of the ribs.
4. A panel as claimed in claims 1, 2 or 3 in which the spacer is a Z-shaped steel purlin.
5. A panel as claimed in claim 2 in which the upper flange of the spacer has slots cut to receive ribs of the outer skin.
6. A double-skin roof or wall panel substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying single figure of drawing.
