Description

SPECIFICATION Child's safety seat This invention relates to a child's safety seat for use in a land vehicle, air or marine craft, of the type in which a seat body having a seat portion and a back portion is secured on a normal adult passenger seat.
According to one aspect of the invention, a child's safety seat for use in a land vehicle, air or marine craft, comprises a seat body having a seat portion and a back portion, a harness having lap straps and shoulder straps attached to respective anchorage points on the seat back, a frame adapted to be secured on an adult passenger seat by an adult lap safety belt, and means for securing the seat body to the frame.
Preferably, the anchorage points for the harness are incorporated into the means for securing the seat body to the frame so as to transfer loads exerted on the harness during sudden deceleration of the vehicle or craft directly on to the frame.
According to another aspect of the invention, a child's safety seat for use in a land vehicle, air or marine craft, comprises a seat body having a seat portion and a back portion, a harness having lap straps and shoulder straps attached to respective anchorage points on the seat body, each of the anchorage points for the shoulder straps comprising an anchorage strap extending vertically in abutment with the seat back and a three-bar slider mounted with the anchorage strap extending behind its top and bottom bar and in front of its centre bar, the shoulder strap being connected to the top bar of the slider.
With this arrangement, an upward force on the shoulder strap pulls the slider upwards along its anchorage strap but the slider locks in position in response to a downward force on the shoulder strap.
Consequently, as a child user of the seat grows, the sliders tend to move up the anchorage straps so as to remain level with his shoulders.
Preferably, the anchorage straps extend through slots in the seat back and round a horizontal member forming part of the above-mentioned frame, thereby serving both to secure the seat body to the frame and to transfer loads on the shoulder straps directly to the frame.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa rear view of a child's safety seat in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a front view of the seat shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a side view of the seat shown in Figures 1 and 2 with an adult seat shown in chain-dotted lines, Figure 4 is a perspective view of the frame of the seat shown in Figures 1,2 and 3, Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on lines 5-5 in Figure 1, and Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 6-6 in Figure 3.
Referring to Figures 1 and 4, a child's safety seat comprises a moulded shell 10 having a seat portion 12, a back portion 14 and two side wings 16 and 18.
The shell 10 is mounted in a frame 20 formed from a U-shaped main member 22, two U-shaped side members 24 and 26 and a U-shaped rear member 28.
The limbs of the main member 22 are bent at an intermediate point along their length so that each has an inner diagonal portion 30,32 and an outer rearwardly extending horizontal portion 34,36. The free ends of the horizontal portions 34 and 36 are bent inwardly so as to confront each other at 38. The free ends of the limbs of the side members 24 and 26 are connected to the diagonal portions 30 and 32 respectively. The free ends of the limbs of the rear member 28 are connected to the horizontal portions 34 and 36 at locations near but spaced from the rear corners thereof. The upper ends of the side limbs of the rear member 28 are connected to the inner ends of the lower limbs of the side members 24 and 26 respectively.
As can be seen from Figure 3, in use, the seat and frame are positioned on the seat cushion 40 of an adult seat with the posts of the horizontal portions 34 and 36 behind the points of connection with the rear member 28 projecting underthe bottom of the seat back 42. An adult lap belt 44 fitted to the adult seat is then threaded through the two U-shaped members 24 and 26 and tightened to hold the frame securely in position against the seat cushion 40 and seat back 42.
Referring to Figure 5, the shell 10 is connected to the frame 20 by a pair of anchorage straps 50 and 52, each of which extends through respective upper and lower slots 54,56 and 58,60 in the back portion 12 of the shell 10. On the front side of the back portion 12, the anchorage straps 50 and 52 carry respective three-bar sliders 62 and 64.
The strap 50 extends generally behind the slider 58 but projects through its two slots and in front of the centre barthereof. Behind the back portion 12, the strap 50 extends behind the horizontal central part of the main member 22 of the frame 20 so as to hold the back portion 12 in close proximity therewith. The ends of the anchorage strap 50 are connected to a second three-bar slider 68 which is located behind the lower slot 58 and serves as a tensioning device.
The free end of the anchorage strap 50 is, in use, concealed behind a seat liner (not shown) for the shell 10. The strap 52 is similarly disposed and is tensioned with the aid of its own second three-bar slider 68.
Referring again to Figure 2, the shell 10 is provided with a full harness consisting of two shoulder straps 70 and 72, two lap straps 74 and 76 and a crutch strap 78 which are interconnected by a buckle 80 of known type, which is designed to release both the shoulder and lap straps 70 and 74 on one side from the shoulder and lap straps 72 and 76 on the other The drawing(s) originally filed was/were informal and the print here reproduced is taken from a later filed formal copy.
side.
Referring again to Figure 4, the shoulder strap 70 is connected to the top bar of the slider 62 on the anchorage strap 50. The other shoulder strap 72 is similarly connected to the top bar of the slider 64.
The lap straps 74 and 76 are connected to respective three-bar sliders 82 and 84 which serve as strap adjusters. Each ofthe sliders 82 and 84 is also connected to a respective lap anchorage strap 86,88 which extends through a respective slotnearthe bottom of the corresponding side wing 16, 18 and has its outer end connected to a bracket SO, 92 which is secured to a respective one of the side members 24 and 26 (see Figure 5).
