Description

SPECIFICATION Earrings This invention relates to earrings for personal wear. Conventional earrings for use with pierced ears include a fastening comprising a shank adapted to extend through the pierced ear lobe of the wearer and a separate, detachable retaining clip which engages on the shank behind the ear lobe.
Such separate retaining clips are sometimes dif ficultto attach securely to the shank when it is in use, with consequent risk of loss of the earring, and additionally such retaining clips are themselves easily lost.
According to the invention, we provide a novel earring wherein the fastening comprises a generally hook-shaped member including a shank portion adapted to extend through the pierced ear lobe of the wearer and an integral retaining portion which extends transversely of the shank portion and is adapted to engage behind the ear lobe of the wearer.
Such a fastening can be made very simply, for example from suitable wire, and has the further advantage that there are no separate parts to be lost, whilst in use, the earring in accordance with the invention may be placed securely in position without difficulty.
Preferably the shank portion of the fastening is substantially straight. The retaining portion may also be substantially straight, and preferably it extends at an angle of slightly less than 90 to the shank portion. Whilst the fastening may be of uniform crosssection throughout the entire length of both portions, the free end of the retaining portion is preferably smoothly rounded so as to facilitate insertion thereofthrough the wearer's pierced ear lobe, and if desired, such rounded end may be afforded by a slight enlargement.
According to a further feature of the invention, the earring may incorporate one or more additional elements which can be assembled on the fastening to alter the appearance of the earring.
For example, the earring may comprise a basic stud, with at least one additional element having an aperture whereby the element can be assembled with the stud on the shank portion of the fastening.
Such additional element may comprise a dropper or a disc or the like to augment the basic stud. Several such additional elements may be formed into a set with a single stud, to be used in various combinations of the wearer's choice.
The invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein FIGURE 1 shows a basic stud earring in accordance with the invention; FIGURE 2 shows a basic dropper; and FIGURE 3 shows an additional dropper element assembled with the basic stud of Figure 1.
In the example illustrated in Figure 1, an earring in accordance with the invention includes a fastening, indicated generally at 10, which comprises a length of gold (or gold plated) wire which is bent into generally L-shape so as to afford a straight shank portion 11 and a straight retaining portion 12 which extends substantially at right angles to the shank portion, but preferably at an angle of slightly less than 90 . The outer end of the shank portion 11 carries the decorative part of the earring, which in this case is shown as a single pearl 13. In use, the retaining portion 12 of the fastening is first passed through the pierced ear lobe, and for this purpose its free end is preferably rounded as shown, until the shank portion 11 is engaged in the ear lobe, with the retaining portion 12 extending behind the ear lobe.
The example illustrated in Figure 2 is in the form of a dropper earring including a similar fastening 10, but in this case the shank portion 11 is formed integrallywith a pendant extension 14 carrying, in this instance, a pearl 15 atthe lower end.
In the example illustrated in Figure 3, the stud earring of Figure 1 is provided with an additional dropper element 16 which is detachably associated therewith. The element 16 includes an apertured plate 17 through which the fastening 10 of the stud earring is passed. In this way, an additional element may be assembled with the basic stud earring to change its appearance.
It will be appreciated that one or more, similar or different, additional elements may be assembled with a single basic stud earring or with the basic dropper earring of Figure 2.
Whilst the invention has been illustrated in relation to pearl earrings, it will be appreciated that it is applicable to any conventional type of earring for use with pierced ears.
A basic stud earring andlor a basic pendant earring in accordance with the invention may be formed into a set with one or more additional elements, and such additional elements may be of similar or different design in such a set.
1. An earring for use with pierced ears, including a fastening comprising a generally hook shaped member including a shank portion adapted to extend through the pierced ear lobe of the wearer and an integral retaining portion which extends transversely to the shank portion and is adapted to engage behind the ear lobe of the wearer.
