Abstract

A door number display is disclosed which is easier to see at night by being illuminated. The number can be opaque against an illuminated background or itself illuminated against a dark background. The illumination can be from a battery or mains originating electrical supply. Alternatively a luminous material can be used, or solar energy stored during daylight and released at night. The display may incorporate a bell-push or keyhole and a timer or light-sensitive circuitry may be employed.

Description

SPECIFICATION Door number display This invention relates to a door number display and it is an object of the invention to provide a door number display which enables a door number to be seen more easily in the dark.
Accordingly the invention provides a door number display having a front surface carrying a number and illumination means for causing the number to be visible in darkness.
The illumination means can be constituted by the number or its surround being luminous. The illumination means can be an electric lamp in a housing which provides the front surface.
The number can be opaque and have a surround which is illuminated by the lamp.
Alternatively the number can be a translucent or transparent item illuminated by the lamp and having a dark surround.
The lamp can be connected to a power supply such as a battery or a mains transformer.
The housing is preferably of plastics material and adapted to be secured to a door or structure adjacent a door. It can have a translucent front surface to which an opaque number has been affixed or applied.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to a preferred embodiment, it being understood that the following description is illustrative and not limitative of the scope of the invention.
A preferred embodiment of display of the invention comprises a housing of plastics material having a surround and a rectangular, flat translucent front panel to which one or more characters making up a number have been attached or applied. The housing contains an electric lamp or lamps mounted to give an even illumination of the whole area of the front panel and connected to a power supply such as a battery or a transformer connected to the mains. The housing is adapted to be secured to the outer surface of a door panel by fasteners passing through the door panel and is sealed to prevent ingress of rainwater to the lamp(s) and wiring.
The or each character can be a piece of flexible or rigid material applied to the front panel of the display by adhesive. When purchasing the display a householder would purchase the housing and one or more characters each having an adhesive coating on the rear thereof.
Alternatively, the or each character can be formed by applying a coating of paint or the like to the outer surface of the panel, for example by spraying through a stencil.
Variations can be made to the above. For example, the or each character can be attached or applied to the inside of the front panel of the display. If the front panel is of composite struture, the or each character can be sandwiched between layers thereof.
The housing can incorporate a bell-push, keyhole, or other door furniture. The housing can be designed to be flush or surface mounting. By providing solar cells an accumulator and a timer or light-sensitive circuitry the display could be made independent of any outside power supply.
Illumination can be provided by making the character(s) of the number, or the surround, of luminous material or having a surface coating of such material. The material can be of the type which "charges" itself from sunlight and gives up the so-stored energy by becoming luminous in darkness.
Many other variations are possible.
CLAIMS (filed on 21st April, 1982) 1. A door number display having a front surface carrying a number and illumination means for causing the number to be visible in darkness.
2. A display as claimed in claim 1, wherein the illumination means is constituted by the number or its surround being luminous.

6. A display as claimed in claim 3, 4 or 5, wherein the lamp is connected to a power supply such as a battery or a mains transformer.
7. A display as claimed in claim 6, wherein the housing is of plastics material and adapted to be secured to a door or structure adjacent a door.
8. A display as claimed in claim 7, wherein the housing has a translucent front surface to which an opaque number has been affixed or applied.
9. A display as claimed in claim 1,wherein power for the illumination is generated by a solar receptor during the hours of daylight.
10. A door number display substantially as hereinbefore described.
