Abstract

209,710. Metal & Thermit Corporation, (Assignees of Deppeler, J. H.). Jan. 9, 1923, [Convention date]. Vaporizing-apparatus; liquid fuel supply.-In an apparatus suitable for preheating rail ends prior to " thermit " welding, oil fuel is vaporized by means of an electrical resistance coil surrounding the fuel pipe just before being discharged into a pipe conveying air from a blower to the burner nozzle. The apparatus shown comprises a fuel tank 2 supported in cradles 3 on uprights 4 on a truck 1 which also carries an electrically driven air pump or blower 10. The oil from the tank 2 passes through the depending loop of a pipe 5 to a needle-valve 6 arranged in a pipe 21 leading from a fitting 19 on the discharge end of the blower 10. An electrical resistance coil 7 protected by a sheet-metal housing 8 and arranged around the upwardly extending leg of the pipe 5 vaporizes the oil before it passes through the valve 6. The pipe 21 is connected by a flexible pipe or hose 9 to a nozzle N leading to the mould where the air and vapour mixture is burnt. The oil in the tank 2 is put under pressure by means of a pipe 18 connected to the fitting 19 and provided with an air gauge 17. In an apparatus used with a 550 volt D.C. supply circuit, a 220 volt motor for the blower was placed in series with an 85 ohm resistance heating unit. The apparatus may also be used with open flame burners.
