Abstract

To electrically insulate a flange- footed railway rail from a rail clip 1 and from an anchorage 4 for the clip, there is provided a device including electrically insulating material 8 part of which is interposed between the clip and the top of the rail flange 7 and part of which is interposed between the edge of the rail flange 7 and the anchorage 4. The device also includes a metallic reinforcing member 9 the whole of which is flat. Part of it is interposed between the clip and the top of the rail flange 7 and two projections on it have part of the anchorage lying between them so that the device cannot move far along the rail. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A device for use in a railway track to electrically insulate a rail According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a device which is suitable for use in a railway track to electrically insulate a flangefooted railway rail from a rail clip, which bears downwardly upon the upper surface of the rail flange, and from an anchorage, at one side of the rail flange, for the rail clip, the device including an electrically insulating part made of a first material and having a first portion which is to be interposed between the rail clip and the upper surface of the rail flange and also having a second portion which is to be interposed between the edge of the rail flange and the anchorage, the device also including a reinforcing part which is made of a second material and has a plate-like portion which is to be interposed between the rail clip and the upper surface of the rail flange, the plate-like portion having a thickness which is at least 3 mm, or is greater than the thickness of most of the first portion of the insulating part or is both at least 3 mm. and greater than the thickness of most of the first portion of the insulating part.
The thickness of the plate-like portion of the reinforcing part could be 4 mm. or more, better still 5 mm. or more.
Preferably, the insulating part and the reinforcing part are fastened together before delivery of the device to the site where it is to be installed. Thus the insulating part may be moulded around the reinforcing part or the two parts may be manufactured separately and later bonded together and/or fastened together by virtue of elasticity of the insulating part.
The second portion of the insulating part may extend along the rail for a distance of more than 5 cm. Thus it may have about the same length, measured along the rail, as the first portion of the insulating part. Alternatively, the second portion of the insulating part may be one of two or more much shorter lugs, spaced apart along the rail, which depend from the first portion and are interposed between the rail flange and the anchorage.
The reinforcing part is preferably of metal, for example steel. It is preferably entirely flat and made of sheet material. It may comprise two lugs between which part of the anchorage lies, the lugs preventing the device from moving along the rail.
Alternatively, or in addition, the insulating part may have two lugs which serve the same purpose.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an assembly on a railway track including a rail foundation, a flange-footed railway rail standing on the rail foundation, an anchorage beside one edge of the rail flange, a rail clip driven into the anchorage, a device according to the first aspect of the invention having the first portion of the insulating part and the plate-like portion of the reinforcing part lying on the rail flange and the second portion of the insulating part between the edge of the rail flange and the anchorage, part of the rail clip bearing downwardly on the rail flange via said device.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows an end view of an assembly on a railway track, the assembly including a device according to the first aspect of the invention, Figure 2 shows an end view of the device, and Figure 3 shows a plan view of the device.
Figure 1 shows an assembly like that of Figures 1 to 3 of British Patent Specification No.
1,213,762, the assembly including a clip 1 in accordance with Figures 4 to 6 of that specification, a concrete railway sleeper 2, a pad 3, an anchorage 4 having a hole 5 through it into which the straight leg 6 of the clip is driven, a flange-footed railway rail having a flange 7 and, instead of the nylon moulding 4 of specification No 1,213,762, a device comprising an electrically insulating part 8 and a reinforcing part 9.
The reinforcing part 9 consists of a flat piece of sheet steel 5 mm. thick and about 102 mm. long in the form of a rectangular plate-like portion 10 from one longer side of which extend two lugs 11, between which lies the side nearest the rail of the anchorage 4.
The insulating part 8 is moulded from nylon and is about 20 mm. longer than the reinforcing part and it includes a first portion 12 which lies beneath the portion 10 and is slightly longer and thinner than the latter, the portion 12 being 3 mm.
thick. The portion 1 2 extends over most of the area of the insulating part 8 as seen in plan view (Figure 3). It is inclined by about 120 to the horizontal in the position in which it is used, which is approximately the position in which it is shown in Figure 2.
At each end of the portion 12 is an upstanding wall 13 the top 14 of which is a little higher than the upper surface of the portion 10 of the reinforcing part. Along the longer side of the portion 12 which is remote from the anchorage 4 is an upstanding wall 1 5 from the top of which a ledge 1 6 projects a short distance towards the anchorage 4, over the upper surface of the portion 10 of the reinforcing part. Along the other longer side of the portion 12 there is a vertical depending flange 1 7 which extends over the entire length of the portion 12 and at each end has a lug 18 extending away from the rail, part of the anchorage 4 lying between the two lugs.
The reinforcing part 9 is a push-fit in the insulating part 8 so that the two parts tend not to become separated or become incorrectly positioned relatively to one another in normal handling of the device.
1. A device which is suitable for use in a railway track to electrically insulate a flange-footed railway rail from a rail clip, which bears downwardly upon the upper surface of the rail flange, and from an anchorage beside one edge of the rail flange, for the rail clip, the device including electrically insulating material which is to be
