Abstract

An elongate strip of material (10) is provided with spaced apart locations (11) containing information and in the spaces between the locations (11) the strip (10) is provided with a transversely extending guide line (12) along which the strip (10) is severed to form individual labels and on each side of each guide line (12) there is provided a transverse line (13) which may comprise a printed line or a line of perforations or a crease line about which the end of a severed label is folded back before the label is secured to a garment by lines of stitching adjacent the folded back ends. The lines (13) serve as a guide to the person who stitches the label to a garment to ensure that the fold line is at a right angle to the longitudinal edges of the label. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Garment label This invention relates to a strip of material from which labels can be severed, preferably labels which can be attached to garments. The invention also relates to a label severed from a strip of material. Such labels can be used for carrying information such as the name and/or Trade Mark of the garment manufacturer and/or instructions concerning the cleaning or washing of the garment.
Labels for attachment to garments are usually produced in the form of an elongate strip of material with the desired information printed thereon at spaced-apart intervals. When a label is required the strip is severed transversely in the region of a space between adjacent printed information, the ends of the severed label are folded back by hand and the label is attached to the garment such as by lines of stitching through the folded back ends. When folding back the ends of the severed label there is no guide line to assist the person effecting the folding and stitching in ensuring that the fold lines are parallel to each other and at a right angle to the longitudinal side edges of the label. Consequently many labels when fixed to the garment have their ends disposed at an angle other than a right angle and are unsightly. The strip of material from which the labels are severed usually is provided with a transverse printed line in the centre of each space separating adjacent printed information in order to give an indication as to the position where the strip should be severed. The severing takes place along the printed line which therefore can not act as a guide line after severing the label from the strip.
According to the present invention there is provided a strip of material from which labels can be severed, one side of said strip being provided with information at spaced apart locations, a pair of spaced apart transversely extending guide lines being provided in the space between adjacent locations of information and between which the strip is intended to be severed to provide a label, said transversely extending lines, when a label is severed from the strip, each forming a guide line adjacent an end of the label about which the adjacent end of a label is folded before being secured to a garment.
The said pair of lines may each comprise a transversely extending crease line provided on the strip or a printed line or line of perforations.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of part of a strip of material from which labels can be severed, and Figure 2 is a plan view of a label after being severed from the strip and attached by stitching to a garment.
The strip 10 shown in Figure 1 may be formed of a woven textile material, such as cotton, silk, nylon or other plastics material, or it may comprise sheet plastics material. One side of the strip 10 is provided with spaced apart locations 11 containing information which may be printed on the strip 10 or woven into the strip 10.
In the spaces between the locations 11 the strip 10 is provided with a transversely extending guide lines 12 which are shown as a line of discontinuous lines but which may each comprise a continuous line printed on the strip 10.
The information at locations 11 may comprise any desired information such as washing instructions, manufacturers name, Trade Mark, garment size etc.
On each side of each guide line 12 there is a transversely extending line 13 which may comprise a printed line but preferably is a crease line formed in the strip material.
Such a strip 10 is wound around a reel or roll from which the strip 10 can be unwound and severed to form individual labels.
To form a label the strip 10 is severed, such as by being cut, along a line 12. The ends of the severed label are then folded under the label along the lines 13 and the label is attached to the garment 14 by lines of stitching 15 adjacent the fold lines 13. The lines 13 serve as a guide to ensure that the ends of the fixed label are at a right angle to the longitudinal side edges of the label.
Where the lines 13 comprise a crease line they can be formed by a cold or hot metallic stamping member.
The lines 13 may each comprise a line of perforation.
When the lines 13 are formed by a permanent crease this assists in the folding of the label by hand along the lines 13. Also a crease line is invisible when the label is folded.
The lines 1 3 are straight lines and give a guide to the sewing machine operator to produce a straight line of stitching.
The lines 1 2 may be dispensed with where the strip is automatically severed by a machine.
