Description

SPECIFICATION Caulking Gun for Bagged Sealant Background of the Invention This invention is concerned with a caulking gun for bagged sealant. More specifically, it is related to a caulking gun which extrudes sealant from a plastic film tube by using compressed air.
A sealant in a sausage-shaped plastic film tube has the advantage of significantly reducing the amount of wasted sealant in comparison with the conventional cartridge type of caulking gun since the plastic tube when emptying is folded into a small volume. The bagged sealant can be extruded by the piston actuated or the hand-gun.
However, extrusion cannot be performed by using compressed air and a bagged sealant because even if a bagged sealant is packed in the cylinder of an air gun, a gap is formed between the inside surface of the cylinder and the outside periphery of the bagged sealant. Compressed air escapes from this gap along the sides of the cylinder and through the extrusion nozzle. It is, therefore, impossible to extrude the sealant by that method.
While the air gun using compressed air is more expensive than the hand-gun, it nonetheless offers greater precision in application and does not require an experienced hand to operate. It also offers extrusion of the sealant at a constant speed.
The industry is in a strong need of an air gun which can be applied to a bagged sealant with reduced waste.
As a means to satisfy this need, a piston typically is inserted in the cylinder and the back of the bagged sealant is pushed via the piston.
However, this piston has its drawbacks. If the gap with the inside wall of the cylinder is decreased in order to maintain airtightness, smoothness will be poor and the piston cannot be driven smoothly.
On the other hand, if the gap is increased in order to avoid this, the leakage of compressed air to the front end side of the cylinder will increase and the sealant will ooze out. The bag containing the sealant may also be snagged in the gap, and it will become impossible for the piston to move because it will be jammed; The objective of the present invention is to eliminate these problems by providing a caulking gun for bagged sealants which sealant can be pushed out by using compressed air and which will eliminate snagging of the bag. Further, escape of the sealant is avoided, and the gun will always extrude the sealant at a constant speed under stable conditions.
Summary of the Invention To achieve the objectives described previously, the caulking gun of the present invention for use with bagged sealant is characterized by the fact that a cylindrical bag of a nonporous, flexible material is installed in the gun cylinder and the gun is equipped with an extrusion nozzle installed at the front end and a connection with a compressed air supply source in the back is provided whereby the front end and the back end of the cylinder are divided airtightly by the cylindrical bag and wherein the rear end of the cylindrical bag is made so that free displacement is possible forwardly along the longitudinal direction of the cylinder.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 shows a side view of a partial cross section of a bagged sealant which can be applied by the present invention. Figure 2 is a side view showing a caulking gun in a partial cross section in an example of the present invention. Figure 2(A) shows the state of the bagged sealant immediately after filling and before extrusion.
Figure 2(B) shows the state of the extrusion process. Figure 3 is a longitudinal cross-sectional diagram of a cylindrical bag.
Description of Preferred Embodiments In the following, a specific explanation will be given for the present invention by using examples shown in figures.
Figure 1 shows a bagged sealant, which is used in the caulking gun of the present invention.
The bag 1 made of a plastic film is packed with a sealant 2. Both ends are sealed with metal clamps 3. The sealants which can be used herein are silicone sealants, polysulfide sealants, polyurethane sealants, acrylic sealants and oil caulking materials.
Figure 2 is a side view of a cross section of the caulking gun of the present invention. Figure 2(A) shows the state of the cylindrical bag before extrusion immediately after the bagged sealant has been placed in the cylinder. Figure 2(B) shows the state of the cylindrical bag during the extrusion process using compressed air.
In Figure 2,4 is the gun cylinder. At the front end of the cylinder 4, an extrusion nozzle 5 is installed with an installation ring 6 between them.
A handle 7 is installed at the back of the cylinder 4. An adapter 8 provided at the lower end of the handle 7 is made so that it can be connected with a compressed air supply source with a flexible tube. The adapter 8 and the back of the cylinder 4 communicate with each other by an air passage.
A valve is provided in the middle of the passage.
This valve is installed so that it can be opened or closed by operating a knob 9 installed at the front end of the handle 7. The valve is opened when the knob 9 is pushed inwardly. The compressed air source and the back of the cylinder 4 are connected, with the adapter 8 lying between -them. By releasing the knob 9, it floats out owing to the reverse elastic force of the sealant and the valve is closed. The connection between the compressed air supply and the back of the cylinder is thus closed. 10 is a knob for operating a relief valve. By pressing the knob 10, the inside of the cylinder 4 and the atmosphere are connected with each other.
11 is cylindrical bag made of a nonporous, flexible material. Its annular ear section 1 1a is inserted between the front end of the cylinder 4 and the installation ring 6. Both are threaded to achieve airtightness. Since the cylindrical bag 1 1 is nonporous and the annular ear section 1 1a is firmly fastened to achieve airtightness, the front end and the back end of the cylinder 4 are divided airtightly with the cylindrical bag 11 as the boundary. As shown in Figure 2(A), the bagged sealant is inserted from the front end of the cylinder 4. It is inserted in the cylinder 4 together with the cylindrical bag 11, the nozzle and installation ring are mounted tightly on the cylinder. By operating the knob 9, compressed air is introduced into the back side of the cylinder 4.As shown in Figure 2(B), the bottom of the cylindrical bag 11 is pushed by the pressure of the compressed air. The back end of the bagged sealant is pushed at the same time. The cylindrical bag 11 is compressed while its rear end is being pushed by the compressed air. Its rear end is moved gradually toward the front end.
While the rear end of the bag 1 is being folded, the sealant 2 is pushed out toward the extrusion nozzle 5. This operation can be carried out very smoothly at a constant speed because the cylindrical bag 11 is flexible. Furthermore, since airtightness is maintained, the compressed air does not leak toward the extrusion nozzle 5 and the extrusion of the sealant 2 is not disturbed.
Figure 3 shows details of the cylindrical bag 11 installed in the cylinder 4 of the caulking gun.
As shown in Figure 3, the annular ear section 7 lea of the cylindrical bag 11 is comprised of two annular sections 12 and 13 formed of metal or plastics. The annular ear section 1 la is made so that it maintains its specific annular shape without deformation. The cylindrical bag 11 is constantly subjected to repeated bending or tensile force. Therefore, a reinforcing material 14 with a bending resistance and a tensile resistance is buried in the matrix of the cylindrical bag. The surface of this reinforcing material 14 is coated with rubber, plastic or other sofi, nonporous material 15. The thickness of the cylindrical bag 11 is tapered so that it is thinner toward the rear end. By having the thickness varying in a taper shape, the bending deformation from its rear end is facilitated.
The reinforcing material 14 may be individual fiber cords installed in the longitudinal direction of the cylindrical bag 11, or fiber cords in the form of woven material or knitted material.
The rubber for the nonporous material 15 may be natural rubber; styrene-butadiene rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, chloroprene rubber, nitrile rubber, isoprene rubber, EPDM rubber, silicone rubber, polyurethane rubber, or other synthetic rubbers; or blended rubbers of these various kinds of rubbers. The plastics may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl vinylidene, or laminated materials of these various kinds of plastics.
The fibers for use as fiber cords for the reinforcing material 14 are wood cotton, rayon, and other cellulosic fibers; nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and other synthetic fibers; carbon fibers; glass fibers; stainless steel fibers, silicon carbide fibers, and other inorganic fibers.
The tapering of the thickness of the cylindrical bag and the installation of the reinforcing material 14, as described above, are preferred embodiments of the present invention. However, it is not necessary to have nonporosity of the cylindrical bag or flexibility.
As described above, the caulking gun for bagged sealant of the present invention is characterized by the fact that a cylindrical bag of a nonporous, flexible material is installed in a cylinder provided with an extrusion nozzle installed at the front end and connected with a compressed air supply source in the back, whereby the front end and the back end of the cylinder are divided airtightly by the cylindrical bag and wherein the bottom of the cylindrical bag is made such that free displacement is possible forwardly along the longitudinal direction of the cylinder. The bagged sealant is extruded using compressed air. In contrast to the case in which a piston is used, the sealant bag is not snagged. The oozing of sealant due to the leakage of the compressed air toward the extrusion nozzle does not occur either. The sealant can be extruded at a constant speed under stable conditions.
