Abstract

Two conventional sets of pinch rolls 10, 11; 15, 16 are arranged one set on each side of a set of bend rolls 14 of the type used to bend and stretch plates so as to level them. The pinch rolls are driven by reversible DC electric motors so that the plate may be pulled in alternative directions through the bend rolls. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method of, and apparatus for, levelling metal plates This invention relates to a method and apparatus for levelling or flattening metal plates and has particular though not exclusive application to high strength metal plates.
According to the invention a method of flattening or levelling metal plates comprises pulling a plate through undriven bend rolls by means of driven pinch rolls. Preferably the plates are pulled in one direction by a first set of driven pinch rolls located on one side of the bend rolls, and then in the opposite direction by a second set of driven pinch rolls located on the other side of the bend rolls, only one of the sets of pinch rolls being driven for each pass of the plate through the bend rolls.
The pinch rolls may be conventional metal rolls or they may be covered with a layer of plastic or rubber material to improve the frictional grip on the plates.
The plastic or rubber material is preferably polyurethane.
From another aspect the invention comprises apparatus for flattening or levelling metal plates comprising a set of driven pinch rolls, a set of bend rolls and means to drive the pinch rolls so as to pull a plate through the bend rolls, a second set of pinch rolls being located on the side of the bend rolls remote from the first set of pinch rolls and also being adapted to be driven to pull the plate through the bend rolls in the opposite direction.
Preferably each pinch roll or set of pinch rolls is provided with its own reversible driving motor so that when one set of pinch rolls is being driven the other set may free-wheel.
The accompanying drawings illustrate diagrammatically embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 1 illustrates diagrammatically a single set of pinch rolls and a set of bend rolls in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates two sets of pinch rolls one on each side of a set of bend rolls; Fig. 3 illustrates the arrangement for driving each set of pinch rolls by means of an electric motor and a one way clutch; and Fig. 4 shows another drive arrangement.
In Figure 1 is shown a set of conventional pinch rolls 10, 1 1 mounted in a frame 12 with the conventional screw-down means 13 for applying pressure to the pinch rolls. Adjacent the pinch rolls is a set of bend rolls 14 which may be conventional rolls of the type used to bend and stretch plates so as to level them.
Fig. 2 illustrates the same set of pinch rolls 10 and 1 1 and bend rolls 14 and the second set of pinch rolls 1 5 and 16 located on the side of the bend rolls remote from the first set of pinch rolls.
The bend rolls in Figure 1, and each set of bend rolls in Figure 2 are arranged to be driven as illustrated in Figure 3. The upper pinch roll 15 in Figure 3 is driven by a reversible DC electric motor and the lower roll 16 is driven by a similar electric motor 1 7a. Similarly the pinch rolls 10 and 1 1 will be driven by electric motors exactly as shown in Figure 3. The motors are so arranged that when one set of rolls 15, 16 are being driven the set of rolls 10, 11 are undriven and the non-driven set of rolls will effectively free-wheel while the plate is being pulled by the driven set of rolls.
Alternatively, as shown in Figure 4 both rolls 15 and 16 may be driven by a common electric motor 1 7b through a gearbox 19. In each instance the load on each motor may be adjusted to a very small value to avoid the need for a clutch.
A plate may be pulled through the bend rolls of Figure 1 by means of the pinch rolls 10 and 1 1 and this process may be repeated a number of times so as to level or flatten the plate.
Preferably the two sets of pinch rolls are used as shown in Figure 2 and in this case the rolls may be alternatively driven i.e. the set of rolls 10, 1 1 may first be driven so as to pull the plate through the end rolls 14 while the other set of pinch rolls 15 and 16, being undriven, simply follow the motion of the plate.
Then the set of rolls 1 5 and 16 may be driven in the opposite direction to that of rolls 10 and 1 1 so as to pull the plate back through the rolls 15 and 16 whilst rolls 10 and 1 1 free-wheel or idle.
The rolls 10, 1 1, 15 and 16 may be simple steel rolls of the type commonly used as pinch rolls or they may have a layer of plastic or rubber material on their adjacent working surfaces so as to improve the frictional engagement of the rolls with the plates. The material is preferably polyurethane.
It will be noted that the plates are only tensioned between the out-going pinch rolls i.e.
the driven pinch rolls and there is no drive either to the bending rolls or to the other set of pinch rolls when the plate is being pulled through.
1. A method of flattening or levelling metal plates comprising pulling a plate through undriven bend rolls by means of driven pinch rolls.
2. A method according to claim 1 and in which the plates are pulled in one direction by a first set of driven pinch rolls located on one side of the bend rolls, and then in the opposite direction by a second set of driven pinch rolls located on the other side of the bend rolls, only one of the sets of pinch rolls being driven for each pass of the plate through the bend rolls.
3. A method according to claim 1 or claim 2 and in which the pinch rolls are conventional metal rolls or they are covered with a layer of plastic or rubber material to improve the frictional grip on the plates.
4. A method according to claim 3 and in which the plastic or rubber material is polyurethane.
5. Apparatus for flattening or levelling metal plates comprising a set of driven pinch rolls, a set of bend rolls and means to drive the pinch rolls so as to pull a plate through the bend rolls, a second set of pinch rolls being located on the side of the bend rolls remote from the first set of pinch rolls and adapted to be driven to pull the plate through
