Abstract
A corkscrew comprises a head portion 10 in the form of a crown cork opener from which extends a shank 12 the end portion 14 of which is spirally formed and has a pointed end 15. The shank 12 may be enclosed in a tubular cover 16, the tubular cover being provided with an interior projection 18 which cooperates with the spiral portion of the shank whereby the cover may be screwed onto the shank. The head portion 10 is formed with a transverse hole 19 into which the tubular cover 16 may be inserted so as to extend at right angles to the shank and thereby form a handle for the corkscrew. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Corkscrew
The invention relates to corkscrews and sets out to provide a corkscrew which, when not in use, is compact and has the spiral pointed operative part thereof protected. In a preferred embodiment, the corkscrew is combined with a crown cork bottle opener.
According to the invention there is provided a corkscrew comprising a head portion from which extends a shank at least a portion of which is spirally formed and has a pointed end, and a tubular cover within which the shank may be received, the head portion being shaped to locate the tubular cover, when removed from the shank, at right angles to the shank, and the tubular cover being provided, on the interior surface thereof, with a projection whch cooperates with the spiral portion of the shank whereby the cover may be screwed onto the shank.
By simply providing the above-mentioned projection within the cover, for cooperation with the spiral portion of the corkscrew, a screw engagement of the cover is obtained without it being necessary to provide interengaging threaded portions on the cover and shank or head portion, as has been the case hitherto in corkscrews of this type.
The head portion may be formed with a transverse hole into which the tubular cover may be inserted so as to extend at right angles to the shank.
Preferably the length of the tubular cover is such that, when being screwed onto the shank, its end engages an abutment before said projection reaches the end of the spiral portion, whereby the cooperation between the projection and the spiral portion urges the end of the cover firmly into frictional engagement with the abutment to retain the cover on the shank. The abutment may comprise a part of the head portion.
Preferably the head portion constitutes a crown cork opener so that the device is a combined corkscrew and bottle opener.
The following is a more detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a combined bottle opener and corkscrew according to the invention, in the condition for use as a bottle opener.
Figure 2 shows the device with the tubular cover removed from the corkscrew, and
Figures 3 and 4 are views from above and below respectively of the bottle opener portion of the device.
Referring to Fig. 2, the device comprises a head portion 10 integrally formed with shaped lugs 11 so as to constitute a conventional type of opener for crown corks.
Extending from the head portion 10 is a shank 1 2 comprising a smooth portion 1 3 and a spiral portion 1 4 having a pointed end 15. A tubular cover 16 of such a size and shape as to fit over the shank 1 2 is provided, the tubular cover being closed at one end by a cap 1 7. A projection 18 is secured to the inner wall of the tubular cover 1 6 at the end thereof nearer the cap 17, and when the shank 1 2 is inserted into the cover 1 6 the projection 18 cooperates with the spiral portion 14 of the shank so as to act as a screw thread. The tubular cover 1 6 may thus be screwed onto the shank 1 2 and the projection 1 8 is so located that the end of the cover 1 6 engages the head portion 10 before the projection 1 8 reaches the end of the spiral portion 1 4. Thus the cover may be screwed tightly into abutting frictional engagement with the head portion 10 so as to be retained in position over the shank 1 2.
Fig. 1 shows the cover 1 6 in engagement with the shank 1 2 and the device may then be used as a crown cork opener. When it is wished to use the device as a corkscrew the cover 1 6 is unscrewed from the shank 1 2 and passed through a circular hole 1 9 in the head portion 10 so as to extend at right angles to the shank 1 2. The cover then acts as a cross bar for the corkscrew enabling it to be used to remove corks from bottles in the conventional manner. Preferably the cover 1 6 is a close sliding fit within the hole 1 9.
The device may be formed from any suitable metal or metal alloy. For example, it may be formed wholly from a precious metal, such as silver, or it may be formed from a nonferrous metal either uncoated or coated by some such process as chromium- or silverplating. The spiral portion 1 4 may be separately formed from hardened steel and attached to the material of the smooth portion 14 of the shank 12.
1. A corkscrew comprising a head portion from which extends a shank at least a portion of which is spirally formed and has a pointed end, and a tubular cover within which the shank may be received, the head portion being shaped to locate the tubular cover, when removed from the shank, at right angles to the shank, and the tubular cover being provided, on the interior surface thereof, with a projection which cooperates with the spiral portion of the shank whereby the cover may be screwed onto the shank.
2. A corkscrew according to claim 1; wherein the head portion is formed with a transverse hole into which the tubular cover may be inserted so as to extend at right angles to the shank.
3. A corkscrew according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the length of the tubular cover is such that, when being screwed onto the shank, its end engages an abutment be
