Abstract
A seat 10 is attached to a leg 30 of a golf trolley by means of a bracket assembly 12 comprising a tubular socket 17 swivellably connected to a clamp plate 16. When the trolley is moved between locations where the seat is used, stem 11 is pushed up and secured by a bolt in an inoperative position with base plate 15 raised above the ground so as not to hinder trolley movement. When the trolley is out of use for some time, only seat 10 and stem 11 need be removed, while bracket assembly 12 may remain fitted to leg 30. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Golf trolley seat assembly
This invention relates to a detachable seat assembly for mounting on a golf trolley.
Seats for mounting on golf trolleys are already known, but such seats are prohibitively expensive to produce and rely on the strength of the trolley to support the weight of the seat and anyone sitting thereon. Nowadays, golf trolleys are of increasingly lightweight construction and the availability of an inexpensive detachable seat for such trolleys would be welcomed by golfers.
The object of the present invention is the provision of such a seat.
To this end, the invention provides a detachable golf trolley seat assembly comprising a socket through which a stem supporting a seat is slidably located, a clamp swivelably attached to the socket to enable the socket to be mounted onto a frame member of a golf trolley and locking means for locking the stem in an inoperative position with its lower end clear of the ground to facilitate movement of the trolley, and permitting sliding of the stem to an operative position with its lower end resting on the ground so that the weight of a person who may sit on the seat will be transmitted to the ground.
A further aspect of the present invention is a golf trolley comprising a frame for supporting a bag, said frame including a plurality of legs whereon are wheels which enable the trolley to be moved, to one frame member of which is fitted a seat assembly of the aforesaid type.
The seat is preferably made of either moulded plastics or mild steel round bar and is conveniently detachable from its stem. The stem itself preferably has a base plate at its lower end.
The clamp preferably comprises a clamp plate swivelably attachable to the socket and a clamp yoke for securing the clamp plate to the frame member.
The clamp plate is advantageously a channel box section with a notched groove in both longitudinal edges and the clamp yoke conveniently comprises a single U-bolt.
The invention will be described further with reference to a preferred practical embodiment thereof as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of a golf trolley frame with a preferred embodiment of the seat assembly of the present invention attached thereto;
Figure 2 is an exploded, enlarged perspective view of the bracket assembly with a fragmentary view of a trolley leg and the stem of the seat; and
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the seat assembly of Fig. 1 to a larger scale with only a portion of one leg and one wheel of the trolley shown.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 a preferred embodiment of the golf trolley seat assembly according to the present invention comprises a seat 10 supported by a stem 11 and a bracket assembly 1 2. The seat 10 consists of a moulded plastics bar 1 3 of circular cross section formed into an approximate figure of eight configuration. As indicated in Fig. 3, the seat 10 is curved from front to rear and also has a short tube 14 attached at substantially the centre of its underside. The stem 11 is tubular and its upper end slots securely into the tube 14 when the seat is assembled. At the lower end of the stem 11 is a base plate 15.
The bracket assembly 1 2 comprises a socket 17, a winged bolt 19, a clamp plate 16 and a U-bolt 18, as shown in Fig. 2. The socket 1 7 comprises a tubular body with a screw-threaded projection 24 extending laterally from substantially mid-way along its outer surface and a screw-threaded aperture 25 located in the wall of the socket 1 7 opposite said projection 24. The winged bolt 1 9 engages in the aperture 25.
The clamp plate 1 6 is a channel box section with a notched groove 20 in both longitudinal edges. There are three holes 21, 22, 23 in the base of the channel box section. The socket 1 7 may be connected to the clamp plate 1 6 by the projection 24 extending through the hole 22 and being secured by a washer 26 and a nut 27. The U-bolt 18 is of such dimensions that its ends are capable of extending through the outer holes 21, 23 in the clamp plate 1 6 to be secured there by nuts 28, 29 respectively (Fig. 3).
When the seat assembly is to be attached to a leg 30 of a golf trolley frame, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, the socket 1 7 is loosely connected to the clamp plate 1 6 by the screw projection 24 extending through the hole 22 and washer 26 and nut 27 engaging therein. The clamp plate 1 6 with the socket 1 7 thus attached is offered to the rear of one of the golf trolley legs 30, with the notched grooves 20 fitting part way around the circumference of the leg 30, and the socket 1 7 is swivelled until the approximate angle required between the longitudinal axes of the clamp plate 1 6 and the socket 1 7 has been ascertained. It will be appreciated that, in use, the longitudinal axis of the clamp plate 1 6 should lie substantially perpendicular to the axis of the leg 30, while the longitudinal axis of the socket 1 7 is preferably substantially perpendicular to the ground on which the golf trolley is standing. Once a suitable angle has been ascertained, the nut 27 is tightened so that the clamp plate 1 6 and the socket 1 7 can no longer be moved with respect to each other. The clamp plate 1 6 is then attached at a suitable height to the leg 30 by means of the U-bolt 18 positioned around the leg 30 with its ends secured in holes 21 and 23 of the clamp plate 16 by nuts 28 and 29 respectively.
The stem 11, dçtached from the seat 10, is pushed through socket 1 7 from the underside until its base plate 1 5 rests on the ground.
The seat 10 is then slotted onto the upper end of the stem 11 so that the seat is ready for use by a golfer. The weight of anyone who may sit on the seat is tilUS transmitted to the ground and not borne by the trolley frame.
The seat assembly may be used by a golfer whenever and almost wherever he wishes to sit down while out on a golf course. When the golfer wishes to pull his trolley between locations where he uses the seat, he simply pushes the stem 11 of the seat 10 upwards so that its base plate 1 5 is no longer in contact with the ground and will not hinder trolley movement and tightens bolt 1 9 to hold the stem in its inoperative position. When the golfer does not wish to use the seat assembly for some time, for example, when he leaves the golf course, only the seat 10 and stem 11 need to be removed, and possibly conveniently stored in the golf bag. The bracket assembly 1 2 may remain permanently attached to one leg of the trolley.
It will be appreciated that the above described seat assembly may be attached to different types of golf trolleys and other frame members besides legs, the notched grooves 20 of the clamp plate 1 6 facilitating secure attachment of the bracket assembly 12 to frame members of differing diameters.
The scope of the invention is not, of course, limited to the exact foregoing details and variations may be made thereto. For example, the seat may have a different form of configuration and may be made of different material, the clamp plate and socket may be of any suitable shape or size and the U-bolt and winged bolt may be replaced by suitable alternatives such as any convenient U i or V-shaped member or locking device respectively.
