Description
SPECIFICATION
Clip for mounting on a headed stud
The present invention relates to an improved clip which is adapted to be mounted on a headed stud.
It is a common practice, particularly in the vehicle industry to weld a metal T-stud having a head and a shank to a thin metal panel and then to attach articles such as cables, mouidings or trim pads to the stud or studs with the aid of a metal or plastics clip. Many plastics clips have been designed for this purpose and in many cases, the clip is formed with a key-hole shaped slot enabling the clip to be slidably mounted on the T-stud.
Hitherto, the shape of the slot formed in this type of clip has been difficult to mould and has required very close tolerances in order to ensure that the clip is always securely mounted on the stud and will not work loose under heavy vibration.
It is an object of the present invention, therefore, to provide a clip for mounting on a
T-stud which does not present any unusual moulding problems and which will provide a totally secure mounting of the clip on the T-stud.
According to one aspect of the present invention we therefore provide a clip having a base, a slot formed in the base enabling the clip to be slidably mounted on a T-stud and a latching element integral with the base which can be latched to the base when the clip is slidably mounted on the stud to effectively close the end of the slot and thereafter resist removal of the clip from the stud.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention we provide a clip for attachment on a
T-stud having a head and a shank, the clip comprising a base having a bottom face and a side face, a first latching element on the base, a slot in the bottom face running into the side face and a shoulder extending along a side of the slot in a plan generally parallel to the bottom face of the clip whereby in use the base can be slidably mounted on the headed stud with the shoulder located under the head of the stud and a resiliently latching element movable into a position in which the latching element closes the end of the slot, the latching element having a second latching member adapted to cooperatively engage the first latching member on the base of the clip to close the end of the slot and prevent removal of the clip from the stud.
Preferably the latching element is integral with the base and may be in the form of an arm resiliently hinged to the base.
The slot may extend only partially through the depth of the base of the clip or it may extend wholly through the base. If the slot extends through the full depth of the base the latching element may include a projecting abutment adapted to extend into the slot when the first and second latching members are interengaged and thereafter abut the head of the stud.
The first latching member may comprise an undercut step in the side face of the base and the second latching member may comprise a hook on the latching element.
The shoulder may be inclined so that the head of the stud compresses the shoulder as the clip is slidably mounted on the stud so as to provide a tight vibration-free connection between the clip and the stud.
A preferred form of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:~
Figure 1 is a side v#iew showing a clip according to the present invention adjacent a T-stud welded to a support panel;
Figure 2 is a side view of the clip shown in
Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clip shown in Figures 1 and 2;
Figure 4 is a view taken on the line lV-lV of
Figure 1; and Figure 5 is a side view, partly in section, showing the clip mounted on the T-stud and engaging a cable.
A clip is indicated generally in the drawings at 10. The clip 10 is formed from a synthetic plastics material, preferably as an injection moulding. The preferred material for the clip is an acetal resin but any plastics material having the required strength and resilience may be employed.
The clip 10 comprises a base 11 and a latching element 12 in the form of an arm which is joined to the base by a hinge portion 13.
The base 11 has a bottom face 14, a top face 15 and an end face 16. A slot 17 is formed in the base 11, extending through the full depth of the base. One end of the slbt 17 runs out of the side face 16 and the other end terminates within the base. A shoulder 18 runs along both sides of the slot 17, the shoulder 18 lying in a plane generally parallel to the bottom face 14. The end face 1 6 of the base is formed with an undercut step 19 and the upper surface of the step 1 9 is chamfered to form a cam face 20.
The latching element 12 overlies the base 11 and is formed with a latching member in the form of a hook 21 which is adapted to cooperatively engage beneath the step 19 so as to latch the latching element 12 to the base 11 and thereby close the end of the slot 17. The bottom surface of the hook 21 is chamfered to form a cam face 22 adapted to engage and slide across the cam face 20. The latching element 12 also includes a cable engaging portion 23 and an abutment 24, the abutment 24 being shaped and located so that it will project into the slot 17 when the latching element is engaged with the base 11.
The clip 10 is adapted to be mounted on a
T-stud 30 having a head 31 and a shank 32 which is welded to a support panel 33. In order to mount the clip on the stud 30, the clip is placed on the support panel 33 and slid in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 1 so that the shank 32 of the stud enters and passes along ths slot 17 with the shoulder surface 18 located beneath the head 31 of the stud. When the clip 10 has been pushed home against the stud 30 so that the head 31 abuts the end of the slot, the latching element 12 is pressed downwardly onto the base 11. The inclined cam faces 20 and 21 on the base 11 and hook 21 respectively allow the hook to ride across the cam face 22 and snap behind the step 19 so as to lock the latching element 12 onto the base 11.In this position, the abutment 24 on the latching element 12 is located within the slot 17 behina tne head 31 of the stud so as to prevent
movement of the clip relative to the stud. The clip
is now securely mounted on the stud 30 and a
cable 40 can be clipped into the cable engaging
portion 23 to secure the cable to the support
panel 33.
If it is necessary to disengage the clip from the
stud this can be done manually without difficulty
by applying sufficient lifting and turning pressure
to the latching element 12 to disengage the hook
21 from the step 19 on the base 11. Once the
latching element has been disengaged and lifted
away from the base lithe clip can be slidably
removed from the stud.
If necessary, the shoulder 18 on the base 11
can be inclined upwardly away from the end face
16 of the base so that the head of the stud
compresses the shoulder 18 as the clip is slidably
mounted on the stud thereby ensuring a vibration
free connection between the clip and the stud. It is
also envisaged that the slot 17 may be waisted or
of key-hole shape so that the shank 32 has to pass
through a necked portion in the slot but when in
position at the end of the slot, the clip can be
positionally adjusted relative to the stud to provide
for a limited amount of play and adjustment of the
position of the clip on the support panel 33.
It will be appreciated that the clip 10 may be
designed to attach articles other than cables to the
support panel, for instance the latching element
may be designed to engage a moulding or a trim
pad in a well known and conventional manner.
It is also envisaged that the method of latching
the latching element 12 to the base 11 may be
modified to suit the specific requirements of a
particular application. For instance, the inter
engaging latching members on the latching
element and the base may be provided on one or
both of the side faces of the base and latching
element.
Other minor modifications to the shape and
design of the clip may also be made without
departing from the spirit and scope of the present
invention which is more particularly defined in the following claims.
