Abstract

In a method for the continuous production of endless, vulcanized rubber sections or sheets of rubber, in particular treads for vehicle tyres, a band guided in an endless path is brought to bear against moulding tools and rubber composition is extruded continuously between the band and the moulding tools, which are displaced in an endless path. The moulded and vulcanized rubber composition is taken out of the moulding tools in the form of one or more endless rubber sections or rubber bands. A device for carrying out the method comprises moulding tools 5 to which the rubber composition is supplied, and a band 3 guided in an endless path. The moulding tools are disposed on an endless chain 4 which is driven so that the band comes to bear against the moulding tools 5 at their upper side. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method and device for the continuous production of vulcanized rubber sections The present invention relates to a method for the continuous production of endless, vulcanized rubber sections or rubber sheets, and in particular a method for the continuous production of endless vulcanized treads for retreading vehicle tyres. There is a need for a method for the continuous production of vulcanized rubber sections or rubber sheets, which method is simple and wherein the device for carrying out the method can be utilized in the optimum manner and without losses of supplied heat. Furthermore, there is naturally a need to find such an automatic method which does not require any manual operation.
The invention likewise relates to a device for carrying out the method, the device comprising the installation of a moulding tool to which rubber composition is supplied, preferably by means of an extruder, and a band which is guided in an endless path and which preferably consists of a steel band.
In the American Patent Specification 4012 188, a method and a device are described for the continuous shaping of a plastics material, such as a thermoplastics material, under pressure against a drum comprising mould cavities comprising irregular surface formations and cavities. The method and the device are, however, restricted to the shaping of plastics and the device has certain disadvantages particularly when altering the configuration of the mould cavity.
In the German Patent Specification 835 807, a device is described for the continuous production of sheets of rubber, plastics or the like but these sheets are produced by casting or the like and the device is not suitable for the production of treads for vehicle tyres with deep profiles.
According to the invention, there is provided a method for the continuous production of a vulcanized rubber section for example a sheet or a section of a tread for a vehicle tyre, which method comprises continuously introducing a rubber composition into a space defined between a mould and an endless band, the said mould and band being mounted for continuous movement on seaprate endless paths and at least a portion of the respective paths being adjacent to define the said space therebetween, continuously displacing the mould and the band in the endless paths, and continuously removing the moulded composition from the space.
The invention also provides a device for the continuous production of a vulcanized rubber section which device comprises a mould and a band each mounted least a portion of the respective paths being adjacent whereby to define in the said portion a space between the moving mould and the band, and means for introduding a rubber composition into the said space.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a schematic side view of a device according to the invention.
The device shown diagrammatically in the drawing comprises a pair of wheels 1, 2 round which a steel band 3 runs in an endless path. Immediately below the endless path there is a chain 4, likewise in the form of an endless path, the chain running round two chain wheels of which at least one can be driven.
Fixed to the chain are moulding tools 5 which are mounted on the chain by means of screws passing through, and nuts. Furthermore, the moulding tools 5 are arranged on the chain 4 so that their upper sides or open sides are situated immediately under the wheels 1 and 2 so that the endless steel band can be brought to bear against said sides after the moulding tools have been charged with rubber composition. Two pressure rollers 6 and 7 are provided to cause the correct bearing of the steel band against the upper sides of the moulding tools.
Disposed at a position immediately in front of the wheel 1 is an extruder 8 which extrudes a strand of rubber into the moulding tool.
A cold composition is preferably used which is fed into an extruder for example but which becomes somewhat heated through the extruding in the usual manner. If hot composition is used instead, the vulcanizing time can be reduced. Naturally it is also possible to feed the device with finished strands of rubber but the vulcanizing time is then longer and certain extra precautions have to be taken such as extra rollers to press on the endless band so that the mould space is ensured. If an extruder is used, the extruder die opening may be adjustable in width, for example, so that a strand of rubber is extruded with sufficient width to achieve full vulcanizing right out to the edges of the rubber section or rubber sheet which is being produced. The extruder may further be provided with a plurality of die openings for the extrusion of a plurality of strands of rubber or the device may comprise a plurality of extruders.
The pair of wheels 1,2 and the chain wheel and/or chain wheels are driven by means of geared motors, not shown, that is to say one motor drives the endless steel band 3 and another motor drives the chain 4 with the moulding tools 5 mounted thereon.
The respective speeds of the motors are adapted, inter alia, to the vulcanizing times.
Thus rubber composition is supplied to the device, for example from an extruder 8, the rubber composition being introduced into the mould cavity, which is bounded by the endless band 3 and the moulding tool 5, while the band 3 rotates continuously. The rubber composition is supplied to the device continuously and the necessary moulding pressure is brought about by regulating the feed speed of the extruder taking into consideration the speed of rotation. During the rotation of the band, the rubber composition supplied is moulded and vulcanized to produce the intended rubber section 9 or sheet or rubber. The shaping and vulcanization thus take place during the time when the rubber composition supplied is in the mould cavity and the fully vulcanized rubber section or sheet of rubber 9 is then conveyed out of the device and taken up, for example, by a pair of rollers 10.Thus the device produces an endless section or sheet which can be divided up afterwards, be side-cut if necessary and be divided up into the intended lengths. The speed of rotation of the band 3 is adapted to the time of passage the rubber composition needs to be vulcanized in the respective mould cavity.
For the moulding and vulcanization of the rubber supplied to the respective mould cavities, the moulding tools 5 are heated. This heating can be effected by means of steam or by electrical means, for example by disposing electric cartridges or the like in the moulding tools. The rollers 6 and 7 for tensioning the endless band 3 and for achieving a correct bearing against the tops of the moulding tools 5, are mounted on shafts which extend parallel to the shafts of the pair of wheels 1, 2.
A number of advantages are achieved according to the invention such as the fact that the rubber composition can be supplied to the moulding tools in a soft and plastic state, which leads to an even vulcanization. Furthermore the method is completely automatic and the device therefore does not require any manual operation but only supervision.
In addition, a comparatively large mount of energy is saved as a result of the fact that the process is continuous in its true meaning and so warm rubber composition is continuously supplied to the device and the device is kept continuously heated and continuously produces an endless rubber section or sheet or rubber.
Modifications of the method and the device according to the invention should be possible without exceeding the scope of the idea of the invention.
Thus the dimensioning of the device may be otherwise both with regard to the diameter and width of the band and that the tools can be adapted for the production of narrower or wider sections or sheets and for the simultaneous production of a plurality of sections or sheets. The extent of the endless band can naturally also vary without departing from the idea of the invention, since it is primarily of importance that the endless band should form one side of the mould cavity, the necessary length of which is also adaptable. The speeds of rotation of the band and the chain are thus controlled by the length of the mould cavity and the vulcanizing time needed by the rubber for the sections or sheets produced. The drive of the device and the adjustment of the rollers can naturally be solved in another known manner and with other known devices. Thus the method and the device according to the invention are not restricted to the example of embodiment shown and described but only to the following Patent Claims.
