Abstract

Apparatus for sampling anisated liquids which comprises a polypropylene part coming into contact with the liquid.

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus and Process for Sampling Anisated Liquids The present invention relates to apparatus and processes for sampling liquids in dosed or undosed form and more particularly to anisated aperitif sampling apparatus.
An apparatus of this type is already known, which comprises a certain number of non-deformable parts in contact with the anisated liquid. Certain of these parts are displaceable relative to other parts by coming into contact with the latter so as to create a channel for the outflow of the liquid or for sealing said channel, thereby defining a sampling quantity by the relative movement of two parts.
In order to reduce the cost and weight of such apparatus, attempts have been made to make them from a plastics material.
However, this has led to difficulties. The plastics material must not only have mechanical characteristics such that it is possible to obtain complex shapes by moulding, such that the dimensional stability enables adjustments to be made, such that the elasticity permits catch systems, such that the ductility permits crimped systems, such that connection is possible by using plastic glues or e.g. ultrasonic welding, but also physico-chemical characteristics including the possibility of use for containing a beverage in accordance with government regulations, the organoleptic properties so that the material does not give a taste to the beverage and does not impair the colour, the chemical compatibility with the liquid which must not lead to cracking, softening, tarnishing or yellowing of the material, and the behaviour relative to cleaning agents such as detergents and lyes. However, anisated liquids containing anethole have proved to be particularly corrosive. Their organoleptic quality is impaired in the presence of numerous plastics and in the case of certain of them the dimensional stability is not adequate to ensure the volume of the doses. After carrying out numerous tests on plastics of the most varied types, it has now been found that among the low-price plastics only polypropylene has all the necessary qualities.
The present invention therefore relates to an apparatus for sampling anisated liquid comprising a polypropylene member in contact with the liquid. It is in particular a moving member, which comes into contact with another member or is fitted into the latter.
The invention also relates to a process for sampling anisated liquid, which comprises defining a sampling quantity by the relative movement of two parts, whereof at least one, which comes into contact with the liquid, is made from polypropylene.
The mechanical description of apparatus to which the present invention applies can be found, for example, in the following French Patents: 1 441 023, 1 471 037, 1 470 954, 1 366 459, 2 053 404, 1 586 586,2 033 621,2 068 117,1 306 708,78 07 189,76 38 422,73 022 611,1 322 966, 1183822,1 177 724,2 209 097,74 10 278,2 002 859 and 1 534 147.
The following tests illustrate the invention.
Test 1 Samples were produced from polypropylene (Lacktenes p. 3120 MN 1 and 3120 (MN4), polycarbonate (Makrolon) Registered Trade Mark, polyamide 6 (Nylon), polyamide 11 (Rilsan), Registered Trade Mark, polyester (Va lox), Registered Trade Mark and polyacetol (Delrin), Registered Trade Mark. These samples were immersed for 840 hours in three different aperetifs, namely pastis 51, whisky and muscatel wine. The results given in Table I were obtained.
It can be gathered from this table that the surface of the polycarbonate and polyamide 6 were corroded, which makes it impossible to adjust the parts. The surface of the polyamide 11 was also subject to corrosion.
Polyamide 6, polyamide 11 and polyacetal give a strange taste to pastis 51 and whisky. The Food and Drug Administration does not allow polyester to come into contact with alcoholic products.
Thus, according to table I only polypropylene has the requisite properties.

Firstly ageing tests were carried out at ambient temperature for 220 hours. For this purpose samples of polycarbonate (Lexan), Registered Trade Mark and crystalline polystyrene were immersed and a slight tarnishing was observed. On using an acrylic polymer sample (Altulitel there was slight tarnishing with yellowing and the presence of surface cracks. These features were not observed with polypropylene.
Ageing tests were also carried out at 500C for 200 hours. T ransparenL polycarbonate became opaque, as did crystalline polystyrene. Altulite turned a yellowish white and underwent deformation.
Polystyrene turned yellow. Only polypropylene remained unchanged.
Test 3 A number of polypropylene samples (Hostalen IPPi 1032 end Hostalen PPUWF 1752), Registered Trade Marle were immersed in anisated alcohol at 60 C r one month. No abnormality was observed and in particular no cracking.
