Abstract

A commercial vehicle is provided with a front bumper (1) in which headlamps (2) are installed. Over each headlamp is a resilient footstep or tread (4) of moulded construction with an integral metal reinforcement (7). A spray nozzle (6) of a headlamp washer unit is disposed in an integrally moulded forward portion (5) of the footstep or tread over each headlamp, with a supply conduit (17) to the nozzle extending through the moulding. Attachment bolts are also moulded into the footstep or tread and engage the metal reinforcement. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Goods vehicle bumper constructions The invention relates to commercial vehicles, including goods vehicles such as lorries and trucks, having headlamps mounted in a front bumper provided with a steap or tread, and arranged on the bumper in the vicinity of the headlamps, at least one spray nozzle of a headlamp washing unit.
According to the invention, a commercial vehicle is provided with a front bumper construction having headlamps mounted therein, in the region of the headlamps said bumper construction comprising at least one footstep or tread with a headlamp washer spray nozzle for each headlamp in an integrally formed forward portion or portions thereof.
The or each footstep or tread may comprise a moulded body, conveniently formed with a forwardly directed protrusion of increased depth in which said at least one spray nozzle is arranged. The upper surface of said moulded body, including that of said forward protrusion, may form the foottread surface.
The extent of said tread surface can be appreciably increased by said protrusion.
An embodiment of the invention will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross-section through a headlamp installed in a bumper of a goods vehicle, and through a footstep or tread which is fixed to the bumper and incorporates a nozzle of the headlamp washing unit, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the footstep fixed to the bumper.
The bumper 1 shown in the drawing comprises, at its front, an opening in which is inserted a round headlamp 2 with its receiving part 3. Above the headlamp 2 a resilient moulded body 4 is mounted on the bumper 1 to provide a footstep or tread.
Integrally moulded with the footstep 4 is a forwardly directed protrusion 5 of increased depth in which a spray nozzle 6 of a headlamp washing unit is inserted. The resilient footstep 4 has a sheet metal reinforcement 7. The front portion of the reinforcement 7 is within the moulded protrusion 5 and comprises a downwardly open box 8 whose heightwise dimension decreases forwardly. The rear portion of the metal reinforcement 7 lies on the upper surface of the bumper 1 and, with two bent-over flanges, engages round the rear edge of the bumper.
The resilient footstep 4 extends over the metal reinforcement 7 and, with the structurally integral protrusion 5, the moulding forms the tread surface 11. The footstep 4 is attached to the bumper 1 by two bolts 12 inserted into the protrusion 5 and whose heads abut against the inner face 13 of that side wall of the box 8 lying closer to the bumper 1, the threaded shanks 14 of the bolts 12 passing through the bumper 1 and having nuts 15 which have been tightly screwed into position against the inner face of the bumper 1.
The spray nozzle 6 of the headlamp washing unit is positioned in the lower face 16 of the protrusion 5. A washing liquid duct 17 leading to the spray nozzle 6 forms part of the moulded structure of the bead 5 and extends between the two attachment bolts 12, through the bumper 1 in a round extension 18 forming part of the moulded structure of the protrusion 5.
It will be noted from the above example that the structure for receiving the spray nozzle of the headlamp washing unit is in a part which is present on the bumper for another purpose. The combination is able to provide a cost effective design and, furthermore, one which can be realised in an operationally reliable manner.
1. A front bumper construction for a commercial vehicle having headlamps mounted therein, in the region of the headlamps said bumper construction comprising at least one footstep or tread with a headlamp washer spray nozzle for each headlamp in an integrally formed forward portion or portions thereof.
2. A front bumper construction according to claim 1 wherein said forward portion of the or each footstep or tread forms a protrusion of increased depth.
3. A front bumper construction according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein a tread surface provided by the or each said footstep or tread includes said forward portion.
4. A front bumper construction according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the or each footstep or tread is a moulded construction and comprises a metal member having a portion attached to a main bumper member and a portion embedded in the moulded material.
5. A front bumper construction according to claim 4 wherein at least a rearward part of the or each said metal member is bent over so as to engage round a rear edge of the bumper member.
6. A front bumper construction according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein the portion of the metal member embedded in the moulded material of the footstep or tread comprises an inverted box structure.
7. A front bumper construction according to claim 6 wherein the box structure is downwardly open and the height of said structure decreases in the forwards direction.
8. A front bumper construction according to claim 6 or claim 7 wherein attachment elements are inserted in the moulded material of the or each footstep or tread for securing said footstep or tread to the bumper member and have heads abutting against an inner face of that wall of the box structure lying closertothe bumper member.
9. A front bumper construction arranged for use substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
10. A commercial vehicle comprising a front bumper construction according to any one of the preceding claims.
11. For use in a commercial vehicle front bumper construction, a footstep or tread formed as a resilient moulding having embedded therein metal reinforce
