Vulcanizing in continuous lengths.-Apparatus for vulcanizing india-rubber in long lengths, particularly tyre-bead fillers, comprises heated grooved rotating drums, round which passes a flexible belt. Drums 20, 21, with moulding grooves and adjacent steam chambers, are surrounded by a belt 24, the tension of which can be adjusted by a movement of the journal 28 of the drum 21. A driven shaft 36 carries a worm and worm-wheel 38, on which is mounted a variablethrow crank 43, operating a ratchet mechanism 44 to give an intermittent rotation to a shaft 51, and produce a step-by-step motion of the drum 20 through the worm-wheel 52. The rubber threads are led to the drum between horizontal rollers 55, 56 and vertical rollers 57, and are pressed into the grooves by a presser foot (not shown) consisting of a block sliding on an inclined plane, and reciprocated by an eccentric on a shaft driven independently or from the main shaft 36. A second dummy foot working on the drum at an opposite angle to that of the operative foot is provided to prevent any tendency to rotation of the drum, due to the operation of the presser. The moulded fillers are now carried round between the drum 20 and band 24 and subjected to a vulcanizing heat, which heat is maintained beyond the point of separation of the drum and belt down to the point at which the threads are led off from the drum, between vertical rollers 65. The vulcanized fillers are led to containers over rollers which are driven synchronously with the drum 20 by gearing 73 - - 81. The drum 21 is similarly arranged for the simultaneous vulcanization of a number of bead fillers.
