Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in bags This invention relates to bags for the storage and display of articles to be sold. According to the present invention there is provided a bag having a closed base, front, rear and side walls, at least one of which allows articles inside the bag to be viewed, a top openable to allow the insertion of the articles, and closable means incorporating a suspension device and a stiffening element with at least one fold defining the base and at least one side wall of the bag.
Thus in one bag in accordance with the invention the stiffening means comprise two stiffening elements one with a single fold having a first part extending along a side wall and a second part at the other side of the fold extending along the base. The other board defines the other side wall.
In another bag the stiffening means comprises a single board with a fold, one part of the board defining the base of the bag and the other part defining the rear wall of the bag.
Two particular embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a view of a first embodiment of the invention; Figure II is a view of a second embodiment of the invention; Figure III is a plan view of both components of a suspension and closing device; Figure IV is a cross-section of the suspension and closing device taken through A-A'.
The bag 1 shown in Figure 1 is formed from clear polyethylene having a closed base 2, front 3, rear 4 and side walls 5 and 6, a mouth 7 openable to fill the bag 1 and closable by a combined suspension and closing device 8, and stiffening means 9 which define the said base 2 and side walls 5 and 6. The stiffening means comprise two rectangular boards 10 and 11 formed from cardboard and of the same width. The first board 10 has a fold 12 so that the lower section 13 of the board defines the base of the bag 1 and the upper section 1 4 a side. The side defining section 14 is secured by a weld 15 to side wall 15 thus defining the shape of that side wall 5. The welding may or may not incorporate a compatible adhesive. The second board 11 is similarly secured by a weld 1 6 to the opposite side wall 11.
The embodiment shown in Figure 2 is a bag 20, again formed from clear polyethylene, having a closed base 21, front 22, rear 23 and side walls 24 and 25, a mouth 26 openable to fill the bag 20 and closable by a combined suspension and closing device 27, and stiffening means 28 which define the base 21 and rear wall 23. The stiffening device comprises a rectangular board 29 formed from cardboard having a fold 30 in it, so that the lower section 31 of the board 29 defines the base of the bag 21 and the upper section 32 defines the rear wall 23. The lower section 31 of the board 29 is secured to the base of the bag 21 by a strip 33 as described in the embodiment of Figure 1.
The suspension and closing device 8 in Figure 1 and 27 in Figure II, employed in the first and second embodiment as herein described are of the same construction, comprising two components 40 and 41, the.first component 40 being a mirror image of the second 41. Each component 40 and 41 comprises a longitudinal member 42 joined to the limbs 43 and 44 of a U-shaped member 45 to which is attached a hook 46. On one face of each component 40 and 41 are a plurality of pips 47 and sockets 48, otherwise each component has a uniform thickness as shown in Figure IV.
In use in the first embodiment, component 40 is secured by heat welding to the inside of the front wall of the bag 3 and component 41 is secured in the same way to the inside of the rear wall of the bag 4, both just inside the mouth of the bag 7. When the two components 40 and 41 of the suspension and closing means 8 are pressed together the pips 47 on component 40 locate in the sockets 48 in component 41 and the pips 47 on component 41 locate in the sockets 48 in component 40, thus holding the mouth of the bag 7 closed.
1. A bag having a closed base and front, rear and side walls, at least one of which allows articles inside the bag to be viewed, a top openable to allow the insertion of the articles, closable means incorporating a suspension device, and a stiffening element, with at least one fold, defining the base and at least one wall of the bag.
2. A bag as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the stiffening means comprises a stiffening element with a single fold having a first part defining a side wall and a second part at the other side of the fold defining the base.
3. A bag as claimed in Claim 2 wherein a second stiffening element defines the other side wall.
4. A bag as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the stiffening means comprises a stiffening element with a single fold having a first part defining the rear wall of the bag and a second part at the other side of the fold defining the base of the bag.
5. A bag as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the bag is formed from a clear plastics material.
6. A bag as claimed in Claim 6 wherein the plastics material is polythene.
7. A bag as claimed in Claims 1-4 wherein the stiffening means are formed from cardboard.
8. A bag as claimed in Claims 1-4 wherein the stiffening means are secured to the bag by welding.
