Abstract

An adhesive tape comprising a porous carrier having a discontinuous coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive on each face thereof. The porous carrier may be a woven fabric or a non-woven fibrous structure. The discontinuous coating may be applied by a variety of methods and the product is particularly suitable for use in building up reinforced structures.

Description

SPECIFICATION Adhesive tapes This invention relates to adhesive tapes and more particularly it concerns double-sided adhesive tapes.
According to the present invention an adhesive tape comprises a porous carrier having a discontinuous coating of a pressure sensitive adhesive on each face thereof.
The porous carrier may be a woven fabric or a non-woven fibrous structure such as a paper or fibrous mat. In one embodiment of the invention the carrier comprises glass fibres in the form of a mat, tissue or a woven cloth.
The discontinuous coating may be regular or irregular and may be applied to the carrier by a wide variety of techniques.
Examples of irregular coating techniques include spray coating, powder coating, and coating continuously with a film which subsequently reticulates.
One example of a regular coating technique is the use of printing technique, such as an engraved coater roller, to produce a geometric pattern. Alternatively, a series of spaced narrow strips of adhesive may be generated, for example by extruding, roller coating or blade coating using a notched blade, so as to extend along the length of the tape. The strips can extend axially of the tape or at an angle in diagonal or herringbone fashion and the strips can be continuous or discontinuous.
A preferred method of applying the discontinuous coating is to use reverse roll coater in which the speed of the rollers is adjusted, depending upon the rheology of the adhesive being applied, to give the desired effect.
The adhesive may be applied to the carrier in the form of a hot-melt, or in the form of an adhesive solution, emulsion or suspension.
Any pressure-sensitive adhesive may be applied to the carrier depending upon the end-use envisaged for the adhesive tape. Examples are natural and synthetic rubbers, such as polyisoprene, polychloroprene, polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene copolymers, ethylene-propylene rubbers and nitrile rubbers, acrylic polymers, vinyl polymers, such as the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl ester polymers, polyesters and polyethers. Block copolymers may also be used, such as styrene-butadienestyrene and styrene-isoprene-styrene.
The adhesive may be formulated with additives to improve the properties for the particular application, e.g. adhesive performance may be improved by the addition of tackifying resins, processing oils and other known additives.
The application of the adhesive to the carrier is conveniently carried out using hot-melt techniques and for this method of application adhesives or adhesive compositions based on block-copolymers are preferred.
The adhesive tape may be provided with a liner of, for example, siliconised release paper. If desired, where such a liner is employed, the adhesive coating may be applied to the liner so that it is transferred to the carrier when brought into contact therewith. One side of the carrier may be coated directly and the other side may be coated by transfer from a liner.
Reference herein to coating a carrier with adhesive is to be construed as including indirect coating of the carrier by coating a liner as described above.
The double-sided adhesive tapes of the present invention are suitable for use in applications where the tape is required to permit the passage of material through it. Such an application is the building up of a reinforced polymeric plastics matrix structure in which the polymeric plastics precursor is required to pass through the tape to a substrate underlying it.
One particular example is the use of such tapes in the production of fibre-glass structures in which the tapes can be utilised to hold glass fibre reinforcement in position whilst it is impregnated with resin.
The tape may then form part of the reinforcement (in certain cases it may constitute the reinforcement) and to this end it is preferably a tape formed from glass filaments or fibres.
Where the tape is to be used in reinforcement applications as described above it is desirable that the adhesive should be soluble, to some extent, in the composition of the plastics precursor. Thus when polyester resin compositions are employed the adhesive is preferably styrene-soluble and the use of block copolymers based on styrene is advantageous, such as styrene-isoprene-styrene or styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers.
