Abstract

A W.C. seat 23 and cover 24 are removably hinged on the upper flange 6 of a W.C. bowl by a hinge assembly incorporating a pair of vertically apertured bushings 26, 28 (e.g. of resilient plastics) which are push-fitted over upstanding posts 8, 10 moulded integrally with the bowl flange 6. The posts 8, 10 have circular ridges. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A toilet assembly The present invention relates to a toilet assembly and, more particularly, to an assembly in which a toilet seat and, if provided, a cover therefor, can be readily installed or removed.
The installation and replacement of seats on toilet bowls is time consuming, inconvient and necessitates the use of suitable tools. In particular, the person effecting the installation or replacement usually has to effect the work in an uncomfortable posture in a restricted amount of space.
The present invention seeks to provide an assem buy which overcomes such disadvantages in that a toilet seat and cover can be easiiy, quickly and conveniently assembled or dismantled, which requires no special tools to be used for such installation or removal, which is sturdy in construction and is economical to manufacture.
In its broadest aspect, the present invention provides a toilet assembly comprising a toilet bowl having a flange portion, a pair of spaced apart post members extending upwardly from the flange portion and being integrally formed therewith, a hinge assembly capable of being secured to a toilet seat, the hinge assembly being provided, in each of its end regions, with a bushing for mounting the hinge assembly on the posts such that the hinge assembly is in intimate engagement with each of the posts.
In a preferred embodiment, there is provided bushings which are each formed of a resilient material.
Desirably, the mounting posts are substantially cylindrical and are each provided with a plurality of circular ridges around their external surfaces. Preferably, the hinge assembly is additionally sect rabble to a toilet seat cover.
The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. lisa detailed view of a part of a hinge assembly forming part of a toilet assembly in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view showing a toilet assembly in accordance with the present invention, comprising the hinge assembly shown in Fig. 1 and a toilet bowl,; Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective viewof part of the hinge assembly shown in Fig. 1 and the toilet bowl shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a further perspective view of features shown in Fig. 3 and further illustrating the method of ;mounting the hinge assembly on the toilet bowl.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown in Fig. 2 a toilet bowl 6 having upstanding mounting posts 8, 10 integrally formed therewith. The posts 8, 10 include circular ridges 12,14 respectively. The integral mounting posts 8, 10 receive a hinge assembly to be described hereinafter. The bowl and post may be formed from vitreous material, thermosetting plastics or any other suitable material by any suitable method such as moulding. A hinge assembly to be mounted on the posts 8, 10 comprises a first pair of hinges 16, 18 secured to the lower face of a toilet seat 23, a second pair of hinges 20, 22 secured to a seat cover 24 and a pair of bushes 26, 28. The bushes are provided with lug portions 30, 32.Each lug portion has a through bore formed therein which extends in a direction at right angles to the main bore ofthe bushes 26, 28. The hinges 16, 18, 20 and 22 are pivotally mounted on a rod 34 as are the bushes 26, 28. The rod passes through the through bores formed in the lugs of the bushes. The bushes 26, 28 are preferably made of a resilient plastics or other suitable material. The interior walls 36, 38 of the main bore of the bushes are so dimensioned as to be a press-fit over the posts 8, 10. The assembly may thus be mounted on the toilet bowl by simply pressing, by hand, the main bore of the bushes 26, 28 over the posts 8, 10 as is shown in Fig.
4.
The assembly may be removed by simply lifting the bushes from the mounting posts. The toilet seat and cover may be attached to the hinge assembly either before or after mounting the assembly on the posts
CLAIMS 1. A toilet assembly comprising a toilet bowl having a flange portion, a pair of spaced apart post members extending upwardly from the flange portion and being integrally formed therewith, a hinge assembly capable of being secured to a toilet seat, the hinge assembly being provided, in each of its end regions, with a bushing for mounting the hinge assembly on the posts such that the hinge assembly is in intimate engagement with each of the posts.
