Abstract

207,872. Barbey, C., and Venables, R. E. S. Sept. 6, 1922. B o g i e s; springs, arrangement of. - In a railway vehicle bogie the wheels on each side are mounted independently of those on the opposite side in longitudinal frames which are linked together by transverse members to form an articulated parallelogram so arranged that the vertical and transverse stresses between the wheels are transmitted by the transverse members, while the longitudinal frames when displaced turn about vertical axes falling on or near the rails. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each wheel 1 is separately mounted in a longitudinal frame 2 pivoted at 3 to the transverse channelled members 4, which complete the parallelogram and are provided with guides 5 for the sides 6 of the frames 2. Each wheel 1 thus turns about a virtual pivot located over the point of contact of the wheel and rail. The body of the vehicle is preferably mounted on side bearings 8 on a second parallelogram formed of longitudinal members 9 and transverse, members 10 and supported from the frames 2 by springs 12 and depending rods 14 passing through the pivots 3. An intermediate longitudinal bar 16 connecting the members 10 is supported at its ends 17 in blocks 18 capable of vertical movement between. guide-blocks 19 carried by the transverse members 4, so that the two parallelograms undergo the same lateral displacements but at the same time are permitted a relative vertical displacement. In this construction, when the wheel parallelogram is deformed, e.g. on the vehicle traversing a curve, a slackening of the gauge in the direction at right-angles to the wheels occurs as indicated in Figs. A, A<1>, ivhere A represents the wheel frames and C the transverse members. The full gauge can, however, be maintained by allowing the wheel frames a sliding movement relative to the transverse members, providing sufficient play at the pivots, and arranging a centre bearing on a member connecting the transverse members C, e.g. as indicated in Figs. E, E<1>. A four-wheeled truck constructed on the principle of these two diagrams is shown in Figs. 6 and 10. The central member comprises an intermediate part f and end parts c connected by links h and provided with co-operating guidemembers f<2>, c<1> to allow a relative vertical movement. Each side member or longitudinal frame comprises an intermediate part e connected by springs d and links k to the wheel frames a which have inwardly-projecting extensions a<1>. The extensions a<1> slide on bolts b, b<1> in the transverse members c and the inward projections on the members e slide in guides on the part f. The body itself is supported by a fixed central pivot g on the part f, and by side pins g<1> carried by the bolster and slidable to a small extent relative to the parts e. Specifications 4399/86 and 11254/11 are referred to.
