Abstract

Thermal switches.-Relates to protective devices for electric apparatus of the kind in which a temperature indicator or controller in the current circuit has the same heating characteristic as the part of the apparatus to be protected, and comprises a bi-metallic or other suitable conductor enveloped by a heat insulator which can be adjusted to vary its insulating effect. In one form, Fig. 5, the device automatically opens directly or indirectly a main switch m. The conductor comprises a Bourdon gauge r the free end b<1> of which, on expansion, releases a catch g and allows the spring f to open the switch. The heat-insulating element may comprise an adjustable double-walled insulator h having a slot s in the outer wall, or as shown in Fig. 4 may comprise two cylindrical portions slidable over one another to vary the gap s between them.
