Tunnelling and shaftsinking by boring. - A rock - cutting machine comprises cutters i rotatably carried by a hollow shaft d slidably supported in brackets a, b, and containing a shaft e carrying a drilling head k and driving the cutters i through bevel gearing m, l. One or more radial cuts are formed by driving the shaft e through clutch rand gearing p, f, while the shaft d is held against rotation and is advanced by means of a spindle g supported in a bracket c. When the desired depth of cut is reached, the shaft d is released and is rotated through clutch o and gearing n, h to form a cut parallel to the face. The rock is then detached by picks or wedges.
