Description
SPECIFICATION
Microscope
This invention relates to an illuminated miscroscope and more particularly to a hand held microscope incorporating a battery operated lamp unit.
According to the invention we provide a microscope comprising a housing, a first lens system including an eyepiece, a second lens system including an objective arranged on the optical axis of the first system, means for moving one of said systems in relation to the other for the purpose of focasing, a lamp adjacent said objective, and a light condenser for transmitting the light onto the object to be viewed, said condenser being movable between an operative position and a non-operative position.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the microscope showing the light condenser in the extended position,
Figure 2 is a side elevation with one half of the housing and transparent end cap removed to show the internal components,
Figure 3 is a plan view with the end cap removed and showing the condenser in the extended position, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged view of the light condenser.
The microscope comprises a housing of opaque plastics material 10 formed in two halves sealed together longitudinally along a join 11 (Figure 3). A cover 12 forms part of the housing and is removable for the replacement of batteries 1 3 (Figure 2). A transparent plastics end cap 14 is provided on the housing and is provided with two circular openings 1 5, 1 6 positioned respectively opposite a lamp 17 and on the optical axis of the lens systems 18, 19 (Figure 2).
The lamp 1 7 is mounted on a bracket 20 forming a switch with a contact 21 operable by means of a serrated button 22. The contact is connected by a wire 23 to a spring contact 24 which engages one terminal of the batteries. The central contact of the lamp engages one side of a fixed contact 25 against the other side of which engages the other battery terminal thereby completing the circuit. The lamp serves to illuminate via opening 1 5 the object to be viewed.
The lens systems 18, 19 are arranged on a common axis within the space defined by one side of the housing 26 and a dividing wall 27 formed integrally with the housing 10. The lens system 1 8 is the objective and comprises a tube 28 of plastics material carrying one or more lenses (not shown). The tube 28 is supported on a carrier 29 having moulded thereon a rack 30 engaged by a pinion 31 rotatable by a serrated thumb wheel 32 integral therewith. The thumb wheel 32 is carried by a further wall 33 disposed parallel to and spaced from said wall 27 and extends through sidts formed in both larger side walls of the housing. Focusing takes place by rotation of the thumb wheel causing the carrier 29 to move axially of the optical axis along runners 34.A pair of guides 35 are provided on both sides of tube 28 respectively engaged by projections (not shown) formed integrally with the housing.
The lens system 1 9 serving as the eye piece comprises a tube 36, containing one or more lenses, located by abutment members 37, 38 formed integrally with the housing 10.
Between the two walls 27, 33 there is disposed a light condenser 40 (formed in transparent plastics material tinted with blue dye) which is slidable between a retracted position to an extended position as shown. The condenser is formed with serrated lugs 41 which extend through slots in the housing at each side thereof.
Movement of the condenser is limited by the lugs engaging the ends of the slots. Light from the lamp (see arrow in Figure 1) is focused on the object to be viewed.
As shown in Figure 4 the condenser is formed as a one-piece moulding having a lens portion 42 and a pair of legs which engage the inside surfaces of the housing to stabilize the condenser in both extended and retracted positions.
If desired the microscope may be used as a
torch.
