Abstract

A fitting for a syringe 10 to enable someone to anaesthetise an animal safely, even if the animal is savage or frightened, comprises a tubular plastics barrel 1 about 1 metre long and about @ centimetres in diameter, and an internal rod plunger 2 which is normally flush with the lower end of the tube but protrudes at the upper end by the stroke of the plunger 3 of a hypodermic syringe 4, the rod plunger 2 being spring-loaded in that position by a helical compression spring 5. A cap at the upper end of the tube defines a bearing for the rod 2. At the lower end a second cap 7 acts through a sealing washer 8 to hold the barrel of the syringe against the lower end of the tube 1 and has a hole through which the syringe projects as shown at 9. The rod 2 bears against the plunger of the syringe as shown at 11. It will be clear that the syringe can be used on an animal by someone a metre distant from the animal, merely by pressing on a knob 12 at the upper end of the rod 2. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Hypodermic syringe This invention relates to hypodermic syringes and one object is to provide fitting for a syringe to enable someone to anaesthetise an animal safely, even if the animal is savage or frightened According to the invention a fitting for a hypodermic syringe comprises a first elongate member slidably mounted in relation to a second elongate member in which one end of each of the first and second members is adapted to engage the plunger or barrel respectively of a hypodermic syringe and in which the first and second members are spring loaded together. Preferably the first member is telescopically mounted within the second member.
Conveniently the second member comprises a tube and the first member comprises a plunger having its other end extending from the tube, and including a helical spring surrounding the end of the plunger extending from the tube, which spring acts to resist movement of the plunger into the tube. One end of the tube can be adapted to engage the barrel of a syringe by an end cap and seal, and the one end of the first member comprising the plunger is adapted to engage the plunger of a syringe by bearing against the end of the syringe plunger.
The members might be between 0 5 and 1 5 metres long so that an animal can be injected without the user having to get very close to the animal.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways and one embodiment will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, of which the single figure is a perspective view and a detail of a fitting according to the invention.
The fitting comprises a tubular plastics barrel 1 about 1 metre long and about 2 centimetres in diameter, and an internal rod plunger 2 which is normally flush with the lower end of the tube but protrudes at the upper end by the stroke of the plunger 3 of a hypodermic syringe 4, the rod plunger 2 being springloaded in that position by a helical compression spring 5.

Claims (7)

1. A fitting for a hypodermic syringe comprising a first elongate member slidably mounted in relation to a second elongate member in which one end of each of the first and second members is adapted to engage the plunger or barrel respectively of a hypodermic syringe and in which the first and second members are spring loaded together.
2. A fitting as claimed in Claim 1 in which the first member is telescopically mounted within the second member.
3. A fitting as claimed in Claim 2 in which the second member comprises a tube and the first member comprises a plunger having its other end extending from the tube, and including a helical spring surrounding the end of the plunger extending from the tube, which spring acts to resist movement of the plunger into the tube.
4. A fitting as claimed in Claim 3 in which the one end of the tube is adapted to engage the barrel of a syringe by an end cap and seal, and the one end of the first member comprising the plunger is adapted to engage the plunger of a syringe by bearing against the end of the syringe plunger.
5. A fitting as claimed in any preceding claim in which the first and second members are between 0~5 and 1~5 metres long.
6. A hypodermic syringe including a fitting as claimed in any precedin#g claim.
7. A fitting substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
