Abstract
207,589. Fairlie, A. M. Aug. 25, 1922. Sulphuric acid.-A reaction tower which may also be used for cooling, absorbing, drying, and condensing gases is provided with thin acid-resisting walls which are cooled externally by means of water and contains packing adapted to be built in a stable pile such as hollow hexagonal blocks. In the arrangement shown in the Figure the walls 1 are cooled externally by a shower of water from a sprinkler 5 and cooling is also effected within the tower by the spray of liquid supplied from the tank 8. The liquid is withdrawn through a pipe 13 and before it is recirculated it is cooled and if necessary its concentration adjusted. Variously shaped towers may be used having circular, hexagonal &c. bases but preferably the walls slope from the bottom to the top in order to facilitate the cooling of the exterior by means of water, and the formation of a stable pile of packing which will not exert pressure on the walls. In the manufacture of sulphuric acid by the chamber process the towers may be used to replace the chambers and also the Gay-Lussac towers.
