Abstract

A tampon for use by women for menstrual flow is provided which consists of a roll of compressed fibrous material of which the outer wall is at least partially covered with a layer of at least one thickener or gelling agent which is guar gum, carob gum, tara gum, gum arabic, gum tragacanth, karaya gum, agar-agar, alginates carrageenins, gelatin or psyllium.

Description

SPECIFICATION Tampon having a surface covering The present invention relates to a tampon consisting of a compressed absorbent roll, for example made of cottonwool or cotton fibres, which is used by women as an internal protection against-menstrual flow.
In order to make them easier to use; such tampons are generally packaged inside an insertion tube formed by a cylindrical element in which the tampon is placed, this cylindrical element being provided at one end with a plunger which makes it possible to push the tampon out of the cylindrical element and thus to position it in the body.
Once they are placed in a moist enviroriment, the tampons are capable of increasing considerably in volume because of the highly absorbent nature of the fibrous material of which they are made; howev er, at the end of menstruation, precisely because of this highly absorbent nature, the mucous mem branes may become dry and the tampon may become difficult to remove.
In order to make tampons easier to insert and remove, it has already been proposed (see French Patent 69/38453) to cover the outer wall of the tampon with a layer of lubricant, for example with a layer of certain polyvinyl alcohols. Although this does in fact make the tampon easier to insert and remove after use, a covering of this type neverthe less exhibits the disadvantage of substantially reduc ins the penetration of the body fluids into the tampon from the parts of the surface which are coated with lubricant. It is for this reason that, in the French patent in question, it was proposed to apply the lubricating substance only to that end of the tampon at which insertion takes place.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a tampon having a lubricating outer covering which does not constitute, for the body fluids, a barrier such as to greatly reduce their penetration into the tampon. The tampon covering according to the invention assumes a gelatinous consistency in a moist environment, which, at the end of menstruation, prevents the mucous membranes from becom ing dry and assists the removal of the tampon after use.
The present invention thus provides a tampon of the type indicated above, characterised in that the outer wall of the tampon is at least partially covered with a layer of at least one thickener or gelling agent.
In a preferred embodiment, the layer of thickener or gelling agent is arranged on the side wall of the tampon.
In the present invention, the thickener or gelling agent preferably consists of one or more polysaccharides extracted from plants, and more precisely from seeds or algae. Amongst the polysaccharides, extracted from plants, which can be used as the thickener or gelling agent, there may be mentioned guar gum, carob gum, tara gum, gum arabic, gum tragacanth, karaya gum, agar-agar, alginates, espe cially calcium alginate, carrageenins, gelatin and psyllium.
The thickeners or gelling agents listed above are generally commercially available in the form of a powder or flour. To coat the tampon, the powder or flour of the chosen thickener or gelling agent is suitably dissolved in water so as to form a viscous solution containing from, say, 1 to 10% by weight of thickener or gelling agent, relative to the total weight of the solution. Such a solution can be applied by any appropriate means, either to the fibrous web which is to form the tampon, or to the actual tampon after the fibrous web has been rolled up, before or after the roll formed in this way is compressed.
When the coating operation is finished, a drying operation is carried out, for example in an oven at a temperature of about 1200C,so as to form a substantially dry layer around the tampon.
The weight of the layer of thickener or gelling agent applied to the tampon, according to the invention, is preferably 1 g/m2 to 100 glum2, the surface area being measured on the tampon in the compressed state. A substance acting as a plasticiser and making it possible to obtain coatings which are softer to the touch and more flexible is advantageously incorporated into the aqueous solution of the thickener or gelling agent, which is, to coat the tampon. Amongst the plasticising substances, an example which may be mentioned is glycerol, typically used in an amount of 10% to 50% by weight in the coating solution.
In an advantageous variant of the invention, the tampon is also coated, preferably on a part of its outer wall which is not covered with the layer of thickener or gelling agent, with a'lubricant which is a glyceride, fatty alcohol or a mixture of paraffin and vaseline (liquid petrolatum). The purpose of the presence of the lubricant is to make the tampon easier to insert into the position in which it is used.
The invention will now be described, merely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single Figure shows, in perspective, an insertion tube provided with a tampon according to the invention.
With reference to the Figure, it can be seen that 1 designates an insertion tube of conventional type, consisting of a cylindrical element 2 and a plunger 3 capable of sliding inside the said element. A tampon 4 according to the invention is also housed in the cylindrical element 2. For reasons of clarity, the tampon 4 is shown with part of it outside the cylindrical element 2. The side wall of the tampon 4 possesses four folds 5, which, seen from the outside, have the appearance of grooves created in the wall of the tampon 4. The four folds 5 are parallel to the axis of the tampon 4; they are distributed over this element at 900 intervals; the length of the tampon 4 is about 5 cm and its external diameter, measured outside the folds 5, is about 1.3 cm.
A string 6 is attached to the tampon 4 to enable it to be removed after use. The string 6 passes through the plunger 3 of the insertion tube.
The-tampon 4 is produced from a web of cotton fibres and viscose fibres; this web is rolled up in a known manner and then highly compressed, the four folds 5 being created at the time of compression.
The essential characteristic of the tampon 4 origin- ates from the fact that its side wall is covered, outside the folds 5, with a layer of a thickener or gelling agent. The thickener or gelling agent used is chosen from: alginates, gum arabic, carob gum, gum tragacanth, karaya gum, carob flour and tara gum.
To apply the thickener or gelling agent, an aqueous solution of the thickener or gelling agent containing from 1 to 10% of the said thickener or gelling agent by weight is prepared. In this example, the above coating solution is applied to the side wall of the tampon 4 once the latter has been highly compressed and the folds 5 have been formed. The thickener or gelling agent thus forms a substantially continuous layer on each zone of the side wall of the tampon 4 which is between two folds 5. The tampon 4 which has been coated is then dried using means such as hot-airdrying or infra-red drying. The amount of thickener or gelling agent applied to the tampon 4 is about 10 g/m2.
As a variant, a lubricant, such as a mixture of paraffin and vaseline, can be applied to that end of the tampon 4 which is opposite the plunger 3 of the insertion tube, in order to make the tampon 4 even easier to insert.
It is observed that the layer of thickener or gelling agent has the effect of making the tampon 4 easier to insert and position. In the presence of body fluids, the layer of thickener or gelling agent forms a gelatinous medium which does not oppose the penetration of the said fluids into the tampon 4, and which at the same time keeps a certain amount of moisture in contact with the mucous membranes, thus avoiding any risks of irritation. When the user is at the end of her menstruation, there is no adhesion of the tampon 4 to the mucous membranes because of the presence of this gelatinous medium, so that the tampon is very much easier to remove.
