Description
SPECIFICATiON
Improvements in or in relation to books
This invention concerns improvements in or
relating to books and particularly to books
which have an educational value.
Books in the form of albums are known in
which the pages have blank spaces on which
can be superimposed collectors' items, for
example cigarette and other similar cards.
Such albums have the disadvantage that they
are not of interest to the reader until the blank
spaces have been filled. Books containing
pictures are of course known but these suffer
the disadvantage that, whilst they provide
information for the reader, the latter does not
participate as it were in the production of the
book.
It is an object of the present invention to
provide a book which overcomes or at least
mitigates some or all of the aforesaid disadvantages and which has the attractions both
of providing information for the reader and of
enabling a reader to participate in producing the book.
According to one aspect of the invention,
there is provided a book comprising a plurality
of pages, at least one of which pages is
printed or otherwise provided integrally with
at least one picture of located within a delin
eated frame, the said frame being of such size
that a photographic print may be located
therein by superimposing the print on the said
picture.
The term "picture" is used herein to in
clude all pictorial or graphic representations or
designs which may be printed or otherwise
formed or reproduced on a sheet of paper.
Whilst the said picture may be constituted
by a drawing or the like, very conveniently it
is in the form of a photographic reproduction,
it being the intention that the photographic
reproduction should be covered, and in effect
replaced, by a corresponding print taken by
the reader.
Preferably a plurality of superimposed delin
eated frames is provided, at least one of
which frames contains a picture so that the reader may superimpose a print of a photo
graph on the said picture and may have a
certain latitude in selecting the size and shape -of the print. Conveniently, two delineated frames are provided on each of at least some
of the pages, one superimposed symmetrically
on the other in such a way that the said
picture is contained within the area common
to both frames and so that a rectangular print
which has two sides longer than the other two
can be superimposed on the picture, the
choice of frame within which the print is
placed being dependant upon whether the
height or width of the print is the longer
dimension.
Very conveniently the said book is based on a theme, for example wild life, zoo animals, birds, flowers, historic buildings, ships etc., each picture within the book depicting one item of that theme.
Preferably the said book contains, in addition to the said pictures, wording describing or otherwise relating to the matter depicted in the pictures.
Whilst the said photographic prints may be secured in their superimposed positions on the said pictures by using a suitable adhesive or the like, for example by a mount at each corner of the photographic print, conveniently the said book contains means by which photographic prints may be secured in position superimposed on the said pictures.
Advantageously, at least one respective oblique slit is located within or adjacent to each of the four corners of a rectangular frame, through which slits the respective corners of a photographic print may be slotted to retain the print in position. Suitably the attachment means may be such that photographic prints of different sizes may be located in the area provided, for example by the provision of a respective series of slots within or adjacent each said corner of a delineated frame.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a book comprising a plurality of pages at least some of which are provided with at least one picture and wording describing, or relating to, the picture shown, means being associated with each said page for securing a photographic print superimposed upon the said picture, so that the print is secured against accidental removal.
Conveniently, the said pages of the book are permanently bound within a cover. Alternatively, the book may be in loose leaf form and this invention extends to a single page for use in such book.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a kit comprising one of the said books of the invention together with a camera so that the user has, with the book, the means for taking photographs to provide the prints for superimposition on the said picture.
Advantageously means, for example a flap of paper which may be transparent, is provided adjacent each said delineated frame so that, when the photographic print is in position, the said means may be used to cover the said print to protect it.
The invention also extends to the said books incorporating photographic prints covering the said pictures.
It will be appreciated that the said pictures may be, for example, in black or white, colour or partial colour, half-tone or full-tone. The pictures should be such as to interest the reader in taking an appropriate "corresponding" photograph although it will be appreciated that there is no need for the photograph to be identical to or closely resemble the picture.
Whilst the book would probably appear more interesting if both sides of each page contained at least one picture nevertheless the arrangement may be such that only one surface of each page is provided with the said picture.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, one embodiment of the same will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of apparatus in accordance with the invention.
In this embodiment a book 1 comprises a plurality of removable pages 2 (shown schematically only) on each of which is a rectangular, for example square, picture 3 located within two identical rectangular delineated frames 4 arranged symmetrically with respect to each other and superimposed one on each other, the dimensions being such that the said picture 3 is located within the square area common to both the frames 4, the rectangular frames thus providing a cruciform shape. One page 2a is shown detached from the book 1.
The pictures 3 in the book follow a theme, namely a theme of London sights in the embodiment being described, and adjacent each picture 3 is a description 5 of the sight, for example St Paul's Cathedral, depicted with the information about its construction history etc., the arrangement being such that both sides of all the pages 2 are effectively covered by pictures and wording so that the book as a whole does not look like an album having blank pages for the insertion of pictures or the like. Clearly, alternative themes, for example wild animals, are equally possible.
The lines delineating the said frames 4 are not obtrusive but are feint and of hairline size, each rectangular frame being of such a size as to accommodate a standard sized photographic print 6, the reader being able to locate the print 6 with its long dimension vertically or horizontal depending upon the photograph he has taken.
For that purpose, a respective obliquely extending pair of spaced parallel slots or cuts 7 is provided adjacent each corner of each of the said delineated frames so that a photographic print 6 can be located in position superimposed on the said picture 3 with its corners slotted through the pairs of cuts or slits 7.
It will be appreciated that the said book 1 has the advantage of being informative in that it provides both reading material and pictures in its purchased condition thereby overcoming the disadvantage of photographic albums or the like which are not attractive until they have photographs inserted in them. In contrast to a normal book however there is the advantage that the reader can participate in enhancing the book by taking photographs and superimposing prints of those photographs in the book. To this end, a kit may be provided comprising a camera 8.
In order to protect the photographic prints, alternate pages of the album may be in the form of a protective sheet of, for example, tissue paper.
The said book has an educational value in that the pictures provided in the book not only suggest to the reader what items he should photograph but also can give useful guidance as to an attractive angle or the like from which to take the photographs.
