Abstract

207,244. Peters & Co., Ltd., G. D., Holey, W. H., and Brackenbury, A. G. Aug. 21, 1922. Valves actuated by fluid under control of auxiliary valves.-Apparatus for the automatic regulation of air ejectors or exhausters, especially for brakes of trains, comprises a diaphragm open at one side to atmospheric pressure and on the other to the vacuum reservoir and subject to a spring, a steam chest immediately below the diaphragm chamber, and a valve carried by the diaphragm and having its steam passing through the top of the steam chest to control the steam supply from the chest to a piston cylinder, the piston being connected with the stem of a valve controlling the admission of steam to the exhauster. The ejector governor shown comprises a diaphragm 3, Fig. 1, held between the flanges of a dome 1 which is connected through a pipe 30 with the vacuum train pipe of a .brake system, and a perforated plate or spider 2 supported on a steam chest 4 secured to a cylinder 5 in which works a piston 6 connected to a valve 7 which controls the ejector steam supply. The piston is pressed upwards by a spring, and is formed with a small hole 11 through which the steam passes which required to an exhaust pipe or fitting 12. A pin valve 14 connected to the diaphragm controls a port 13 in the steam chest, leading to the upper side of the piston. A spring 17 adjusted by a plug 18 acts on the upper surface of the diaphragm. When a sufficient vacuum obtains in the pipe 30 the valve 14 is raised, allowing live steam to pass through a connection 20 to a pipe 22 and the chest to the space above the piston 5 which is depressed, closing the valve 7 on its seat and preventing the passage of steam to the space 24 above the valve, which is in communication with the main and pilot ejectors 25, 26. The train pipe is connected at the part 27 with a vacuum chamber 28 from the top, of which the pipe 30 is led to the space above the diaphragm. A handle 32 controls a valve 35, Fig. 3, leading from the space 24 to the stem space 4 of the main ejector by means of an arm 33, and also controls an air admission or brake application valve through an arm 34, Fig. 1. The steam supply to the pilot ejector may be shut off by a screw-down valve 39, Fig. 3, actuated by a handle 40. The air withdrawn by the pilot ejector flows from the chamber 28, Fig. 1, past check valve 45 to the ejector and a like valve is provided for the main ejector. The governor apparatus may be mounted oh the live steam supply pipe in place of being mounted on the inlet chamber 20 of the exhauster. Two governors may be employed, controlling the main and pilot ejectors respectively, or one governor may control the main steam supply and another may control the passage between the cut-off valve of the first governor and the jets of the main ejector.
