Abstract
A soil cutting device (1) mounted from the ploughbeam (3) or from a skimmer (4) carried by the beam (3) of a plough provides a depending cutting blade (10) immediately in advance of the leading edge (20) of the ploughshare or mould board (2) in order to enter and cut the surface (S) of the soil immediately prior to turning of the latter by the ploughshare or mould board (2). The blade (10) is rearwardly inclined towards the leading edge (20). The device (1) may he yieldably mounted so as to lift in the event of a stone or the like tending to jam between the blade (10) and leading edge (20) whilst there may also be provision for depth adjustment of the blade (10). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Plough soil cutting device
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective soil cutting device on or for a plough, i.e. for cutting the surface of the soil immediately prior to turning of the latter by a following ploughshare or mould board.
Practical advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following disclosure.
According to the invention, a soil cutting device is mounted or mountable from structure or attachement of the plough so as to provide a depending cutting blade immediately adjacent a leading edge of an associated ploughshare or mould board in order to enter and cut the surface of the soil immediately prior to turning of the latter by the ploughshare or mould board.
In practice, constructions and arrangements may be as follows, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of the soil cutting device mounted in relation to a mould board,
Figure 2 is a detail view in the direction of the arrow II of Fig. 1, and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modification.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 the cutting device or attachment 1 provides a depending cutting blade 10 adjacent and in advance of the leading edge 20 of an associated ploughshare or mould board 2 so as to enter and cut the soil S immediately prior to turning of the latter by the mould board 2.
The cutting device 1 may be mounted in any suitable manner for this purpose, i.e. from the plough beam 3 and is shown conveniently mounted from the back of a skimmer 4 also mounted in a depending manner from the plough beam 3 in advance of the mould board carrying leg 23.
The form and arrangement of the cutting device 1 is such that the depending cutting blade 10 need only enter the soil S for a sufficient depth to effect surface cutting so that a clean cutting action is obtained without break-up of the soil and also with a minimum of resistance. Thus the cutting device 1 is advantageous in this respect over known cutting devices, e.g. of the sword landside type which is mounted in an upstanding manner from the landside 22 of the mould board 2 adjacent the leading edge 20 of the latter.
In the development shown in Fig. 3 the cutting device 1 is yieldably mounted so as to lift in the event of a stone or piece of root or the like tending to become jammed between the blade 10 and leading edge 20 of the mould board 2. In the example shown the skimmer 4 is carried by an arm 5 pivotally mounted from the mould board leg 23 which arm 5 is pivotally connected at a point along its length to an upstanding rod 6 passing through a bracket or lug 30 on the plough beam 3, a compression spring 7 about the rod 6 acting between the lug 30 and arm 5.
Thus in the event of a stone or the like tending to jam between the blade 10 and leading edge 20, the device 1 and skimmer 4 are able to lift bodily against the action of the spring 7.
The arrangement also enables depth adjustment of the blade 10 and skimmer 4 to be obtained, i.e. by means of a nut 60 threaded on the upper end of the rod 6 and bearing against the upper side of the lug 30.
As will be appreciated, other suitable arrangements of yieldable mounting of the skimmer 4 and cutting device 1 can be provided, preferably with provision for depth adjustment.
1. A soil cutting device mounted or mountable from structure or attachment of a plough so as to provide a depending cutting blade immediately adjacent a leading edge of an associated ploughshare or mould board in order to enter and cut the surface of the soil immediately prior to turning of the latter by the ploughshare or mould board.
2. A soil cutting device according to claim 1 wherein the depending cutting blade of the device is rearwardly inclined towards the leading edge of an associated ploughshare or mould board in position of use.
3. A soil cutting device according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the device is mounted or mountable from a beam of the plough or from an attachment carried by the latter so that the cutting blade depends immediately in advance of the leading edge of an associated ploughshare or mould board.
4. A soil cutting device according to claim 3 wherein the device is mounted or mountable on a skimmer carried in a depending manner from the plough beam in advance of the leading edge of the associated ploughshare or mould board.
5. A soil cutting device according to any of the preceding claims wherein the device is mounted or mountable from structure of the plough so as to be yieldable in order to lift in the event of a stone or piece of root or the like tending to become jammed between the cutting blade of the device and the leading edge of the associated ploughshare or mould board.
6. A soil cutting device according to any of the preceding claims wherein the device is mounted or mountable from structure of the plough with provision 2/3 for depth adjustment of the cutting blade of the device.
7. A soil cutting device according to claim 5 or claims 5 and 6 wherein the device is carried by an arm pivotally carried by structure of the plough, the arm having a spring
