Abstract
In cutting and opening apparatus for tubular knitted fabric, to prevent twisting of the fabric 11 as it is being fed from a washing, drying or like station 10 to a cutting device, comprising a rotatable basket 13, a sensor 14, and a cutter 15, and a fabric opening station 16, which twisting of the fabric 11 would foul the smooth operation of the apparatus, the fabric 11 is passed through a fabric de-twisting and widening device provided between the station 10 and cutting device so as to eliminate any twist in the fabric as it advances to the cutting station. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for cutting and opening tubular
knitted fabric
This invention relates to apparatus for cutting
and opening tubular knitted fabric.
Tubular knitted fabric has to be cut longitu
dinally and opened, and then collected at a
collecting station. This cutting and opening
operation is carried out at the present time
using apparatus comprising two devices, first
of which devices comprises a tubular fabric
cutting basket about which the tubular knitted
fabric slides. This latter device also comprises
a cutter and a suitable sensor which follows
the needle drift of the knitted fabric, and
orientates this latter so that it is fed in the
correct position to the cutter which cuts the
knitted fabric longitudinally as it is fed.
A second of the two devices is a suitable
opening device which opens the cut fabric so
that it reaches the collecting station in an
open state.
However, with the devices of this apparatus
there is a serious problem as yet unsolved,
i.e. during the orientation of the fabric for
presentation to the cutter, the fabric becomes
rotated about its longitudinal axis in order to
follow the needle drift. The fabric thus be
comes twisted upstream of the basket. This
twist gradually increases until it prevents cor
rect feed, in that the twisted fabric can no
longer freely run over the basket, the purpose
of which basket is to widen the fabric in order
to present it to the needle drift sensor. It is
thus necessary to stop the apparatus untwist
the twisted fabric, and recommence feed.
However this manual intervention obviously
has to be repeated frequently, and because of
this the speed and operational accuracy of the
apparatus is limited by the need for frequent
intervention by halting it in order to untwist
the fabric.
An object of the present invention is to
provide apparatus for cutting and opening
tubular knitted fabric in which the arrange
ment of the various devices which comprise
said apparatus is such that torsion no longer
arises in the fabric, so causing it to twist as it
accumulates during feed.
With this object in view the present inven
tion provides apparatus for cutting and open
ing tubular knitted fabric in which the tubular
fabric, in the direction of its feed, passes firstiy through a fabric widening device and is
then fed to a cutting device comprising a
cutter and a positionable basket, over which
the fabric slides, a sensor being connected to
the basket for measuring the needle drift of
the fabric, which sensor determines the rota
tion of the basket, in order to feed the fabric
to the required position to the cutter which is
disposed beyond the sensor, whereupon the
fabric is cut, opened and fed to a collector.
Fundamentally, with the apparatus of the invention it is proposed to dispose the fabric widening device upstream of the cutting device, relative to the feed direction of the fabric, such that the widening device widens the fabric before it is cut, and thus presents it in a straight-line disposition to the sensor and cutter, but, in so presenting the fabric advantageously enables twist of the fabric to be taken-up when this exceeds limits beyond which it would be necessary to halt the apparatus and untwist the fabric manually.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a side view of a preferred embodiment of the apparatus of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of the apparatus of the invention comprises a station 10, from which a fabric 11, in tubular knitted form, originates. The station 10 is for example, a washing, dyeing or like station, but its particular purpose is not important to the apparatus of the invention.
The fabric 11 is fed from the station 10 to a second station 12, namely a fabric detwisting and widening device. In the station 12, the fabric 11 is widened transversely with respect to its length. From the station 12, the fabric 11 is fed, for example, by free fall to a cutting device. The cutting device comprises basket 1 3 over which the fabric 11 slides, the basket 13, by widening or contracting transversely, stretches the fabric 11 transversely.
The cutting device also comprises a sensor 14 and a disc-shaped cutter 1 5.
On advancing further, the stretched fabric 11 reaches the sensor 14 which measures the needle drift, and transmits a proportional sig nal to a geared motor for rotating the basket 1 3. The fabric 11 thus rotates while continuously advancing towards the disc-shaped cutter 15, which cuts the fabric 11 continuously along its length. From the cutter 15, the fabric 11, no longer in tubular form but cut, is advanced to a further station 1 6 which opens it out to its full width. From the station 1 6 the opened fabric is fed to a collector 1 7. The operation of the preferred embodiment of the apparatus does not differ substantially from that of like machines available commercially.
However, by positioning the widening device upstream of the basket 13, if the twist in the fabric 11 increases considerably, the widening device enables a twisted portion of the fabric 11 to pass beyond it so that the twist becomes eliminated as the fabric 11 advances.
No detailed description is given here of the widening device or of the cutting device comprising the basket 1 3, the sensor 14 and cutter 15, as these are of known construction.
The invention is not confined to the embodiment described.
