A lock housing for an espagnolette adapted for right-hand or for left-hand mounting includes a rotatable member (14) having a locking tongue (18) and being rotatable in either direction from a neutral position within the lock housing. Each of the two longitudinal sides (12, 13) of the housing is provided with an opening (19) for the tongue, the openings being formed to limit rotation of the rotatable member. The latter is provided with a first pair of holes (25, 26) for the attachment of operating rods (21, 22), which may exchange position depending upon requirements imposed by the mode of mounting, as well as with a further pair of holes (29, 30) adapted for co-operation with a locking link (27). A locking bolt (40) is introduceable into the lock housing by way of an opening (31) in the bottom plate (10), and will enage the outward end (34) of the locking link (27) when the espagnolette is in its closed position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A lock housing for an espagnolette This invention relates to a lock housing for an espagnolette. Espagnolettes are used for locking doors, windows and shutters of different kinds, and comprise a rotatable member enclosed in a housing, and adapted to actuate one or two operating rods.
The closing function will to some extent deper d upon if the espagnolette is mounted in a door, or the like, which is hung along its right-hand side or along its left-hand side, and a general aim is to design an espagnolette in such a manner, that by simple re-arrangement of the individual components thereof during the mounting of the espagnolette, the same can be made suitable for right-hand or for lefthand application. A further desire may be to be able to lock the espagnolette, so the door, shutter or the like, cannot be artitrarily opened.
The present invention relates particularly to a lock housing for espagnolettes, suited for right-hand or left-hand mounting, and preferably of a type to be mounted upon the internal face of a door, shutter or the like, and thus is not recessed into the body of the same.
According to the invention there is provided a lock housing for an espagnolette adapted for right-hand or left-hand mounting and comprising a rotatable member having a locking tongue as well as means for the attachment of at least one axially displaceable operating rod, characterised in that each longitudinal side of the housing is provided with an opening for the tongue of the rotatable member, said openings both being adapted to form an end stop for the tongue in its locking position, and in that the rotatable member is adapted for co-operation with a locking link, suited for left-hand or right-hand mounting, said link, in an end position, together with a locking bolt introducable in the housing, retaining the rotatable member in a fixed position.
The end of the or each operating rod can be arranged to enter a recess in the frame enclosing the door, shutter or the like, but can also be utilized to operate one or more sidewardly extendable bolts.
The lock housing preferably includes a base plate and a cover co-operating therewith, the openings for the tongue being formed in side walls of the cover. The plate and the cover are preferably each provided with two pairs of holes for locking screws arranged at the corners of the housing, and so located that one pair of diametrically oppositely located holes will be accessible outside of the paths of movement of the or each operating rod.
The portion of the lock housing to be attached to a support is conveniently provided with an arc-shaped groove, located symmetrically with respect to a longitudinal centre line through the housing, and the rotatable member is provided with two holes. symmetrically located with respect to a longitudinal middle line through the rotatable member. whereby the locking link is provided with two trunnions for co-operation with said groove and with a selected one of said holes respectively.
The locking bolt is preferably adapted to project through an opening in the bottom member of the housing, and to abut against an edge of the locking link remote from the rotatable member, the locking link preferably being formed so that, in a disengaged position it closes the opening in the bottom member of the housing.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a sectional plan view through a lock housing of the invention with the components in a disengaged position; Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section through the lock housing mounted at an inward face of a shutter; Figure 3 shows a portion of the lock housing in the same view as in Fig. 1, but with the components in a locking position; Figure 4 shows a locking link, separate from the housing; and Figure 5 shows the end of an operating rod adapted to co-operate with the rotatable member.
The lock housing shown in the drawing comprises an elongate base plate 10 and a mating cover 11, side walls 12, 1 3 of which are provided with tabs fitting into recesses in the longitudinal edges of the base plate. A rotatable member 1 4 is journalled in the base plate, and is provided with a square-section passage 1 5 for receiving a peg 1 6 at a handle 17.
The rotatable member has a locking tongue 18, and in order to make it possible for the latter, in an intended future mounting position of the espagnolette, right or left, to be swung out in either direction, each side wall 12, 1 3 of the cover 11 is provided with an opening 19.
The rotatable member can be swung about 90 only, either clockwise or anti-clockwise.
The rotatable member is, in Fig. 1, shown in the position it occupies when the espagnolette is open, i.e. when the tongue 1 8 is retracted into the housing. Edges 20 defining the openings 1 9 in the side walls will, during the closing movement of the rotatable member, restrict the movement of its tongues outwardly in either direction. Suitable contact surfaces 20a are formed in the side edges of the rotatable member.
Two operating rods 21 and 22 are connectible to the rotatable member, and will be displaced outwardly or inwardly by the latter, to perform their locking functions in a well known manner. Each rod (see Fig. 5) is formed from a flat bar having a substantially rectangular cross-section, and is mounted with its longer sides arranged transversely to the plane of the rotatable member. A portion of the end of the bar to engage the rotatable member is cut away, so that a recess 23 is formed adjacent an end peg 24, which, by suitable working, will be ormed into a generally cylindrical shape, to fit into a hole in the rotatable member.
The recess 23 makes it possible for the rotatable member to turn within the crosssectional borders of the bar, and the location of peg 24 permits a satisfactory transfer of power between the rotatable member and the bar.
The rotatable member is further provided with two holes 25, 26 for co-operation with the bars, said holes being located symmetrically in relation to a longitudinal middle line through the rotatable member, and furthermore so that their centres will be located on a common plumb-line through the centre of the passage 1 5 in the rotatable member, when the latter is swung to its locking position. Any forces applied to the rods by external action, for instance in a case of burglary, will be transferred into the lock housing and received by the rotatable member, so they will not affect a remainder of the mechanism. The forces will, thus, be absorbed by the strongest member (i.e. the rotatable member), which is best suited to withstand damage. The common plumb-line further means an optimal utilization of the toggle-link action (high closing power in the final part of the movement), which is important with the requirements for sealing efficiently now usually imposed upon this kind of lock.
In order to make possible a locking of the espagnolette, a locking link 27 is provided, which together with co-operating parts is adapted to facilitate a change from right-hand mounting to left-hand mounting, or vice versa.
An arcuate groove 28, which is symmetrically located with respect to a longitudinal centre line through the housing, is arranged in the base plate 10, and the rotatable member 14 is provided with two further holes 29, 30 which likewise are located symmetrically with respect to a longitudinal centre line through the rotatable member. Remote from groove 28, on the side thereof away from the centre of the rotatable member, there is an opening 31 in the base plate 10.
The locking link 27 is provided with two trunnions 32 and 33, of which the former always co-operates with groove 28, while the latter 33, depending upon the mounting circumstances, is fitted into either hole 29, or 30. Due to the symmetrical shape of the groove 28 an outward end 34 of the locking link 27 will perform a uniform movement in relation to opening 31, independently of into which of the holes 29 or 30 the link is engaged.
Fig. 2 shows the lock housing mounted at an inward face of a shutter 35. The handle 1 7 is mounted in a fitting 36, which is attached to the outside of the shutter, and which also mounts a lock casing 37. A lock cylinder 38 of push button type in this casing may be locked by means of a cylinder in a well know manner, and is returned to a disengaged position by means of a spring 39.
A bolt 40 connected to the lock cylinder 38 may be introduced through the opening 31 in the base plate 10, and it will then, if the espagnolette has been brought to locking position (Fig. 3), engage the outward end 34 of locking link 27. The outward end of the link is slightly recessed, so as more securely to cooperate with the locking bolt 40. The centre thereof is located on the common plumb-line through the centre of the rotatable member.
As is evident from Fig. 3, one side edge of the rotatable member 14, during an anticlockwise turning thereof to the locking position, will be arrested by the right-hand stop 20 in the side wall 1 3. Simultaneously the locking link 27 will be securely retained by the locking bolt 40, so a rotation of the rotatable member, back towards its open position is prevented. The espagnolette will in this manner be locked, practically without any play.
The lock 37, 38 can be of arbitrary known type, where the cylinder, to attain its locking function is pushed inwards, and either automatically snaps into locking engagement, or is brought into such engagement by the turning of a key. Unlocking is accomplished by a key and the spring 39 will then automatically cause withdrawl of the bolt. As is shown in Fig. 1, the locking link 27 will close the opening 31, and thus prevent an introduction of the bolt, when the espagnolette rests in an open position.
The lock housing is attached to the shutter 35 by means of two screws 45, 46, which both extend through both the cover 11 and the base plate 1 0. During a possible rearrangement of the components for right-hand or for left-hand mounting the position of the rods 21 and 22 must be changed at their engagements at the rotatable member, and the locking link 27 must also be inserted in the proper hole therein.
There are two pairs of holes 41, 42 and 43, 44 respectively, in the bottom plate 10 as well as in the cover 11, the pairs of holes being located in diametrically opposite corners of the lock housing. In the example shown in the drawing, the pair of holes 41, 42 can only be used for screws 45, 46. Screws inserted in holes 43, 44 and passing through the housing would block the movements of rods 21 and 22 during the intended movements from closed to open position. When the rods are re arranged for opposite mounting of the housing, mounting rod 21 will engage hole 25 and rod 22 will engage hole 26, and then screw holes 43, 44 will have to be used.
The embodiment shown permits a simple, but at the same time strong and easily mounted assembly, which can readily be adapted for right-hand or left-hand application. The shape of the individual components may however vary in many ways within the scope of the appended claims. With certain types of espagnolettes, for instance those adapted for doors or shutters with limited height, one rod may be sufficient, but also on such occasion the rotatable member must be provided with the two pairs of holes 25, 26 and 29, 30, respectively, to allow for righthand or left-hand operation.
A blocking of the turning movement towards the "open" position is produced by the tongue 1 8 reaching the lower rod 22. If there is no lower rod provided, the locking link 27 will engage the upper rod 21.
