Abstract
A clip comprises a triangular platform 1 from the under-surface of which depend external 5, 7 and internal 13, 15 pairs of tray side wall- embracing portions which are spaced to receive a top edge of a corner of a tray. A gripper device 23, including a ramp 25 and step 27, is provided on one or more of the wall-embracing portions for engagement with slits or apertures in, or flaps on, the tray. An overlying tray is located on the platform 1 by upstanding flanges 31, 33. A leg 21 depends from the clip and rests on a base of the tray. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Corner clip for a produce tray
This invention relates to a corner clip for a tray for produce and the like and to a tray held in its erected state with four such clips.
Recently there has been a tendency to replace open topped wooden crates for produce with composite wood/board trays or to produce the trays entirely from board. By board we mean a semi-rigid fibrous sheet material which may be treated against moisture penetration. The present invention is concerned with such trays.
Several board trays are now available which are erected from one-piece blanks. However, in order to obtain the necessary rigidity, a two-layer thickness of board is often necessary for at least some of the walls of the trays. Furthermore, complicated corner constructions are often necessary, meaning the tray is difficult or timeconsuming to erect from the blank. As soon as it is necessary to provide end walls of two-layer thickness, the cost of the tray is increased and produce growers do not like to have to spend time erecting trays with complicated corner constructions.
Trays have been proposed which are of a more simple and cheaper construction wherein the corners are held together by brackets made of synthetic plastics material, but in the past it has been found that these brackets are either so designed that the tray does not have sufficient stacking strength, or they are difficult to fit to the tray, because of the problems of erecting the tray from a blank at the same time. Also, many prior art brackets or corner clips are only a friction fit on the corners of the tray, and if the trays are used on automatic fruit picking machines, they can vibrate loose or even vibrate completely off the tray, with disastrous results.
We have now devised a bracket or corner clip for holding together the corners of produce trays made of board which overcomes the disadvantages of prior art clips, is easy to use, is relatively cheap and which can be used with blanks which use the minimum of board and which, in its preferred form, provides adequate stacking strength.
According to the present invention, we provide a corner clip for holding together the corner of a rectangular or square produce tray by sandwiching board material at the corner of the tray between inner and outer wall surfaces of the clip, the clip including a platform portion adapted to overlie and extend inwardly across the corner of the tray to produce a support surface on which the bottom corner of a further overlying tray can be supported, an external pair of tray wall embracing portions depending from the platform portion and adapted to be located against the exterior of the tray at one of its upper corners, an internal pair of tray wall embracing portions depending from the platform portion and adapted to be located against the interior of the tray at said one upper corner, means associated with the platform portion to locate the corner of said overyling tray, and a gripper device on at least one of said tray wall embracing portions adapted to co-operate with a ledge on said tray to maintain said corner clip on the tray.
The external and/or internal pair of tray wall embracing portions may be joined to each other to define an external and/or internal corner on the clip. If desired, the two wall embracing portions of the external pair may be located opposite a cut out in the respective wall embracing portions of the internal pair, or vice versa.
Preferably, the spacing between the respective wall embracing portions of the external and internal pairs is just sufficient to receive a top corner portion of the tray.
Preferably, a leg is associated with the clip which extends the full height of the tray to provide a corner support. The leg may be integral with the clip, and in a preferred arrangement it is formed as an extension of the internal pair of tray wall embracing portions, and said leg has a depth such that, in use, the lower edge(s) thereof will rest upon the base of the tray at one of its internal corners.
Preferably, the means to locate the corner of said overlying tray comprises two tray-locating flanges upstanding from mutually perpendicular edge regions of the upper surface of the platform to locate the bottom corner of an adjacent tray.
Preferably, the gripper device is provided by a ramp, on one of said wall embracing portions, facing towards a lower edge of the clip, and terminating in a step at its upper end.
Also according to the present invention, we provide a produce tray comprising a rectangular or square base, a first pair of side walls upstanding from a first pair of parallel side edges of the base and a second pair of side walls upstanding from a second pair of opposed parallel side edges of the base, a corner clip as described above located at each corner of the tray embracing the upper region of the corner and sandwiching the two adjacent side wall portions of the tray between the two pairs of wall embracing portions, and there being means on, in or associated with at least one of said side walls, with which said gripper device engages, and which provides a ledge.
The means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall may be an aperture, slit or slot or the edge of an overlying layer of sheet material, or anything else forming a ledge on the wall of the tray, with which the gripper device can engage, and over which it can be pushed when the corner clip is applied to the corner of the tray.
If desired, more than one thickness of board material may be provided at the corner of the tray.
For example, corner flaps may extend from one side wall at a corner, across the corner, to overlie the other side wall. In this case, the corner clip must have its pairs of wall embracing portions sufficiently far apart to accept the two thicknesses of board. If corner flaps are provided, then a lower edge of each may provide a step with which the gripper device on the corner clip engages. The flaps may be folded internally or externally of each corner.
As an alternative, the ledge may be provided by the free edge of an upper portion of each side wall of the tray which is folded over through 1 800, inwardly or outwardly, to strengthen the top of the tray.
The gripper devices can be provided just on one wall embracing portion of the clip, or on two, three
or all four.
One embodiment of corner clip according to the
present invention is now described by way of
example with reference to the accompanying
drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a side elevation looking into the
interior of the clip;
FIGURE 2 is an elevation in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 1 looking at the exterior of the clip;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view from above
looking at the interior of the clip, and
FIGURE 4 is a plan view showing the corner clip
on the corner of a produce tray.
Referring to the drawings, the corner clip shown therein is formed of a semi-rigid plastics
material by a moulding operation and comprises a
platform portion 1 which, as can be seen from
Figure 4, overlies the corner of a produce tray 3 when the clip is applied to the tray, the platform 1 being generally triangular. Depending from the underside of the platform 1 is an external pair of tray wall embracing portions 5, 7, the external faces of which lie in planes at right angles to each other and are aligned with side edges of the triangular platform 1. The inner faces of the wall embracing portions 5 and 7 abut external faces of the side walls 9 and 11 of the tray 3 when the clip is fitted on the corner of the tray.Spaced inwardly respectively of the portions 5 and 7 is an inner pair of wall embracing portions 13 and 15 which also depend from the underside of the platform portion
1 and which are arranged to be located inside the side walls 9 and 11 of the tray and to bear against the internal faces of the respective side walls.
The portions 13 and 1 5 are connected together
at 1 7 so as to define a right angle which is slightly
rounded off and each portion is stepped at 19, the step defining a generally right-angled extension which provides a leg 21 , the length of which is designed to suit the depth of the tray 3. It will thus be appreciated that when the underface of the platform 1 rests on the top edge of the tray at the corner, so the bottom (not shown) of the leg 21 will rest against the internal face of the base of the tray in the corner of the tray.
Each of the portions 5 and 7 is provided on its inner face with a gripper device 23 for engagement with a ledge (not shown) provided on the external face of one or both side walls of the tray. The gripper device 23 includes a ramp 25 which faces in the same direction as the leg 21 which ramp terminates in a step 27, the surface of which extends substantially normal to the inner face of the respective portions 5 and 7. It will thus be appreciated that the ramps 25 provide a lead-in for the upper edges of the side walls of the tray when the corner clip is applied to the tray.
In each of the inner wall embracing portions 13 and 15, a window 29 is provided which is located immediately opposite and is a little larger than the respective portions 5 and 7.
The corner clip is provided with means to locate the corner of a further tray to be stacked in overlying relationship with the tray to which the clips are fitted with the corners of the tray lying on the upper surfaces of the platform portions 1.
Many different alternative means are envisaged but as shown, two upstanding flanges 31 and 33 are provided, the external surface of the flanges 31 and 33 being continuations of the external surfaces of the portions 5 and 7 respectively. The flanges 31 and 33 extend at right angles to each other and are connected together at a corner portion 35 and when four clips are applied, one to each corner of a tray, the upstanding flanges will snugly locate the overlying tray.
Although two gripper devices 23 have been shown, it will be appreciated that only one need be provided. Furthermore, although the gripper devices have been shown on the portions 5 and 7 it will be appreciated that they could equally be provided on the portions 13 and 15, in which case they would be mirror images of those illustrated, and would co-operate with a ledge on the inner face of a side wall of the tray. Again, only one need be provided.
Although the leg 21 has been shown as an extension of the portions 13 and 15, it could have a different construction and could, for example, be a clip-on leg rather than integral. Furthermore, it could be an external leg, in which case it could be formed as an extension of the portion(s) 5 and/or 7.
It will be appreciated that the gripper devices 23 can take several different forms but it is essential that they are so constructed that they will allow the corner device easily to be applied over a corner of a produce tray but can then only be removed with difficulty.
The ledge or ledges on the tray and with which the or each respective gripper device engages can be provided by an edge of an aperture provided at a desired location in the or each side wall of the tray or by the edge of a slot. Alternatively, the ledge could be provided by a slit formed in the tray at the desired height. In a preferred arrangement, however, the produce tray is provided with a top edge portion turned over through 180" so that its free edge faces downwardly to provide the ledge.
Obviously, in the construction illustrated, this edge portion would have to be folded outwardly but if one or more gripper devices was provided on the internal portion 13 or 15, the edge portion would have to be turned inwardly. It is also envisaged that corner flaps could be provided at each corner of the tray, the flaps being foldably connected to one side wall of the tray and folded around so as to overlie the adjacent side wall of the tray. The ledge could then be provided in this corner flap either by an aperture, slot or slit therein or by a lower edge portion of the corner flap. Again, the corner flap could be provided on the exterior or interior of the corner. Obviously, if a turned-over edge portion or a corner flap is provided, then the spacing between the side wall embracing portions 5 and 13 and/or 7 and 1 5 must be adjusted accordingly.
In another preferred embodiment of tray, a corner flap is provided at each corner of the tray and this extends to the full height of a side wall, is pivotally connected to the end of that side wall and is folded inside the adjacent side wall at the corner. In the vicinity of the corner both side walls are provided with a cut-out and a further cut-out is also provided in the corner flap which aligns with the aperture in the side wall to which the corner flap is not connected. In the erected tray, gripper devices 23 engage with the apertures provided when the clip is applied to the corner.
In an alternative preferred construction, again a corner flap is foldably connected to one of the side walls at the corner of the tray and this corner flap is foldably connected at the end of that side wall and is folded externally of the adjacent side wall at the corner and a tongue at its lower outside corner is tucked into an inclined slot provided in the side wall to which the flap is not connected. What is more, a corner strengthening flap may be provided
on the side wall at the corner which is not
provided with a corner flap and this corner
strengthening flap would then be folded inside the
side wall to which the corner flap is connected. In
this construction an aperture is provided in the
corner flap and the side wall to which it is
connected with which the gripping devices 23
engage when the corner clip is applied to the
erected corner.
In a yet further preferred construction, a corner flap is foldably connected to an end of one of the
side walls at each corner of the tray and this is folded inside the other side wall at the corner of
the tray. The corner flap and the side wall to which
it is connected are provided with an extension at
their top edge which is folded over through 1 800
to provide a downwardly facing ledge with which
the two gripper devices 23 engage.
It will be appreciated that the various apertures described above could be replaced by slits or slots or any other device providing a ledge and likewise, the ledges provided by the turned-over edge
portions could be provided by other means.
Although the invention has been specifically described with reference to produce trays, e.g.
trays for vegetables and fruit, the corner clip could of course be used on any type of tray or opentopped container having rectangular corners.
Claims (23)
1. A corner clip for holding together the corner
of a rectangular or square produce tray by sandwiching board material at the corner of the tray between inner and outer wall surfaces of the
clip, the clip including a platform portion adapted to overlie and extend inwardly across the corner of the tray to produce a support surface on which the
bottom corner of a further overlying tray can be supported, an external pair of tray wall embracing portions depending from the platform portion and adapted to be located against the exterior of the tray at one of its upper corners, an internal pair of tray wall embracing portions depending from the platform portion and adapted to be located against the interior of the tray at said one upper corner, means associated with the platform portion to locate the corner of said overlying tray, and a gripper device on at least one of said tray wall embracing portions adapted to co-operate with a ledge on said tray to maintain said corner clip on the tray.
2. A corner clip according to claim 1 wherein the internal pair of tray wall embracing portions are joined to each other to define an internal corner.
3. A corner clip according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the two wall embracing portions of the external pair are located opposite a cut out in the respective wall embracing portions of the internal pair.
4. A corner clip according to claim 1,2 or 3 wherein the spacing between the respective wall embracing portions of the external and internal pairs is just sufficient to receive a top corner portion of the tray.
5. A corner clip according to any one of claims 1-4 wherein a leg is associated with the clip which extends the full height of the tray to provide a corner support.
6. A corner clip according to claim 5 wherein the leg is integral with the clip.
7. A corner clip according to claim 5 or 6 wherein the leg is formed as an extension of the internal pair of tray wall embracing portions and has a depth such that, in use, the lower edge(s) thereof will rest upon the base of the tray at one of its internal corners.
8. A corner clip according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the means to locate the corner of said overlying tray comprises two traylocating flanges upstanding from mutually perpendicular edge regions of the upper surface of the platform to locate the bottom corner of an adjacent tray.
9. A corner clip according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the gripper device is provided by a ramp, on one of said wall embracing portions, facing towards a lower edge of the clip, and terminating in a step at its upper end.
10. A corner clip for a produce tray, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
11. A produce tray comprising a rectangular or square base a first pair of side walls upstanding from a first pair of parallel side edges of the base and a second pair of side walls upstanding from a second pair of opposed parallel side edges of the base, a corner clip as claimed in any one of the preceding claims located at each corner of the tray and embracing the upper region of the corner and sandwiching the two adjacent side wall portions of the tray between the two pairs of wall embracing portions, and there being means on, in or associated with at least one of said side walls with which said gripper device on each clip engages, and which provides a ledge.
12. A produce tray according to claim 11 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is an aperture.
13. A produce tray according to claim 11 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is a slit.
14. A produce tray according to claim 11 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is a slot.
15. A produce tray according to claim 11 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is the edge of an overlying layer of sheet material.
16. A produce tray according to any one of claims 11-1 5 wherein more than one thickness of board material may be provided at the corner of the tray.
17. A produce tray according to any one of
claims 11-16 wherein corner flaps extend from
one side wall at a corner, across the corner, to
overlie the other side wall.
18. A produce tray according to claim 17 wherein said ledge is provided by a lower edge of the corner flap.
19. A produce tray according to claim 11 or 15 wherein the ledge is provided by the free edge of an upper portion of each side wall of the tray which is folded over through 1800, inwardly or outwardly, to strengthen the top of the tray.
20. A produce tray for use with a corner clip according to any one of claims 1-10 and substantially as hereinbefore described.

New or amended claims
1. A corner clip for holding together the corner of a rectangular or square produce tray by sandwiching board material at the corner of the tray between inner and outer wall surfaces of the clip, the clip including a platform portion adapted to overlie and extend inwardly across the corner of the tray to provide a support surface on which the bottom corner of a further overlying tray can be supported, an external pair of tray wall embracing portions depending from the platform portion and adapted to be located against the exterior of the tray at one of its upper corners, an internal pair of tray wall embracing portions depending from the platform portion and adapted to be located against the interior of the tray at said one upper corner, means associated with the platform portion to locate the corner of said overlying tray, and a gripper device on at least one of said tray wall embracing portions adapted to co-operate with a ledge on said tray, which ledge at least partly faces away from a top edge of the tray, so as to maintain said corner clip on the tray, and prevent it moving upwardly away from the base of the tray.
2. A corner clip according to claim 1 wherein
the gripper device is provided on one of the wall
embracing portions of the external pair.
3. A corner clip according to claim 1 or 2
wherein a gripper device is provided on both the
external wall embracing portions, which devices
are adapted to engage with ledges on either side
of the corner.
4. A corner clip according to claim 1, 2 or 3
wherein the internal pair of tray wall embracing
portions are joined to each other to device an
internal corner.
5. A corner clip according to any one of claims
1-4 wherein the two wall embracing portions of
the external pair are located opposite a cut out in the respective wall embracing portions of the
internal pair.
6. A corner clip according to any one of the
preceding claims wherein the spacing between
the respective wall embracing portions of the
external and internal pairs is just sufficient to
receive a top corner portion of the tray.
7. A corner clip according to any one of claims
1-6 wherein a leg is associated with the clip
which extends the full height of the tray to provide
a corner support.
8. A corner clip according to claim 7 wherein the leg is integral with the clip.
9. A corner clip according to claim 7 or 8 wherein the leg is formed as an extension of the internal pair of tray wall embracing portions and has a depth such that, in use, the lower edge(s) thereof will rest upon the base of the tray at one of its internal corners.
10. A corner clip according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the means to locate the corner of said overlying tray comprises two traylocating flanges upstanding from mutually perpendicular edge regions of the upper surface of the platform to locate the bottom corner of an adjacent tray.
11. A corner clip according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the gripper device is provided by a ramp, on one of said wall embracing portions, facing towards a lower edge of the clip, and terminating in a step at its upper end.
12. A corner clip for a produce tray, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

A produce tray comprising a rectangular or square base, a first pair of side walls upstanding; from a first pair of parallel side edges of the base and a second pair of side walls upstanding from a second pair of opposed parallel side edges of the base, a corner clip as claimed in any one of the preceding claims located at each corner of the tray and embracing the upper region of the corner and sandwiching the two adjacent side wall portions of the tray between the two pairs of wall embracing portions, and there being means on, in or associated with at least one of said side walls with which said gripper device on each clip engages, and which provides a ledge, thus preventing the gripper device from moving away from the base of the tray, and hence holding the gripper device on the tray.
14. A produce tray according to claim 1 3 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is an aperture.
1 5. A produce tray according to claim 13 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is a slit.
16. A produce tray according to claim 13 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is a slot.
1 7. A produce tray according to claim 13 wherein the means on, in or associated with the said at least one side wall is the edge of an overlying layer of sheet material.
18. A produce tray according to any one of claims 13-1 7 wherein more than one thickness of board material may be provided at the corner of the tray.
19. A produce tray according to any one of claims 13-1 7 wherein corner flaps extend from one side wall at a corner, across the corner, to overlie the other side wall.
20. A produce tray according to claim 1 9 wherein said ledge is provided by a lower edge of the corner flap.
21. A produce tray according to claim 1 3 or 1 7 wherein the ledge is provided by the free edge of an upper portion of each side wall of the tray which is folded over through 1800, inwardly or outwardly, to strengthen the top of the tray.
22. A produce tray according to any one of claims 13-21 wherein said means is provided in or on, or associated with each side wall on either side of each corner of the tray.
23. A produce tray for use with a corner clip according to any one of claims 1-12 and substantially as hereinbefore described.
