Description

SPECIFICATION Lateral restraint fixings for building work The invention relates to lateral restraint fixings for building work.
Lateral restraint fixings are required for providing a compliant tie between supporting structure, which may be of steel or concrete, and walling material constituted by bricks or building blocks or any other materials. Such a tie is required to accommodate vertical movement of the walling material relative to the supporting structure as the building settles or moves due to climatic conditions. The walling material may be a cladding or a lining attached to a steel frame or reinforced concrete skeleton and it is obviously extremely important that the walling material should not start to be displaced after the building has settled to some extent. Generally, soft joints are used to allow some differential movement between dissimilar materials. In such cases the top courses of brick or blockwork require to be linked to the steel or concrete frame in a manner which still allow for vertical movement but prevent displacement of the top courses due to wind pressure or suction. However, lateral restraint fixings which have been placed in position within the wall cavities will prevent displacement of the upper courses of brick or blockwork and will prevent any of the bricks or building blocks from falling from the building due to wind suction.
Previously known lateral restraint fixings have been of various kinds. In one particular known kind of fixing comprising a support member and at least one anchor member, the support member has a slide-way portion of uniform non-circular cross-section and one end adapted to be secured to the supporting structure, and the anchor member has a slot slidable along the slideway portion of the support member and having at least one end portion split and splayed for securely anchoring in the walling material. Such fixings have been effective in providing a compliant tie between supporting structure and walling material but they cannot always be used in a speedy and convenient manner. The object of the invention is to provide a fixing which can be used in a more speedy and convenient manner as building work progresses.
According to the invention, there is provided a lateral restraint fixing for building work, that is to say for providing a compliant tie between supporting structure and walling material, the fixing being constituted by a support element capable of being secured to the supporting structure, and at least one anchor member capable of being connected to said support element, the anchor member having at least one end portion formed so that it can be securely anchored in the walling material, the means whereby the or each anchor member can be connected to the support element being constituted by at least one parallel sided elongate slot extending through the support element and by oppositely disposed notches in side edges of the anchor member, the arrangement being such that the anchor member can be passed part way through the elongate slot in the support element for the oppositely disposed notches in its side edges to be brought into engagement with the parallel sides of the slot in the support element.
The arrangement may be such that to bring the notches in the anchor member into engagement with the parallel sides of the slot in the support element the anchor member needs to be passed on edge through the elongate slot in the support element before being turned flat down to engage its notches with the parallel sides of the slot.
Alternatively, the or each parallel sided elongate slot in the support element may have a locally widened upper end portion through which the anchor member can be passed in flat down condition. The support element will preferably be made of channel or I-section material with the parallel sided elongate slot or slots formed in the central web of the section. The support element may be adapted for being secured to the supporting structure at only one end, for example by having an end portion turned through a right angle relative to the remainder of the element. The or each anchor member may be formed at one end so that it can be securely anchored in the walling material by being split and splayed at that end or by other suitable method of connection to the cladding leaves.
In order that the invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example, only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a lateral restraint fixing embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the restraint fixing in use and providing a compliant tie between supporting structure of reinforced concrete and walling material constituted by bricks or building blocks, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views which illustrate modifications which will presently be referred to.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the lateral restraint fixing there illustrated is constituted by a support element 10 made of channel section metal and a plurality of anchor members 12 shown connected thereto. The support element is shown to be adapted for being secured to supporting structure by having an upper portion 14 turned through a right angle relative to the remainder of the element, the end portion 14 having a hole 1 6 for the reception of a fixing bolt (not shown in Fig. 1).
At least one end of each anchor member is shown to be formed, by being split and splayed, so that in use of the fixing it can be securely anchored in the walling material, that is to say set in the mortar between courses of bricks or building blocks. (The upper one of the anchor members is shown to be double ended whilst the lower anchor members are shown to be single ended, but it will be understood that such different anchor members will be used seiectively. There may be circumstances where only double ended anchor members will be used. On the other hand there may be circumstances where only single ended anchor members will be used and in this case, depending on the building concerned, the anchor members may all extend in the same direction from the support element or may be arranged alternately in opposite directions).
The means whereby each anchor member can be connected to the support element are constituted by a series of parallel sided elongate slots 18 formed in the central web of the channel section of which the support element is formed and by oppositely disposed notches 20 in side edges of each anchor member. The arrangement is such that to connect an anchor member to the support element it can be passed on edge through one of the elongate slots 1 8 and then returned to a flat down condition to bring the oppositely disposed notches 20 in its side edges into engagement with the parallel sides of the slots 1 8.
This can be effected very quickly and easily.
Referring now to Fig. 2, the fixing described above is shown in use and providing a suitable tie between supporting structure 22 of reinforced concrete and walling material constituted by bricks or building blocks 24, the tie being a compliant tie in the sense that it allows vertical movements which invariably occur whilst a building is settling but provides lateral restraint against movement of the bricks or building blocks away from the supporting structure. Such movements could occur, in the absence of lateral restraint fixings, for example under the influence of wind suction. In Fig. 2 the support element 10 is shown to be secured to the supporting structure 22 by an expansion bolt 26, but it will be understood that it could be secured in position in any suitable manner, for example by a shot-fired bolt.It will also be understood that the support element can be of any required length and that since the anchor members do not need to be threaded onto the support element from one end the latter could be adapted for being secured to the supporting structure at both ends. In Figs. 3 and 4 the support element is shown to be of slightly modified form to suit the particular way in which it is required to secure it to the supporting structure. In Fig. 3 the upper end of the support element is shown to have been twisted through substantially a right angle. In Fig. 4 the upper end of the support element is offset from but parallel to the plane of the remainder of the element, this form of support element being suitable for "face" fixing.
Referring now to Fig. 5, in a further possible modification the parallel sided elongate slot of the support element is shown to be provided with a locally widened upper end portion 28 through which the or each anchor member can be passed in flat down condition. It will be undersood that in this way it is possible to bring the notches in the or each anchor member into engagement with the parallel sides of the slot in which it is to be connected without passing the anchor member on edge part way through said slot.
Thus there is provided a lateral restraint fixing which has been found to be a distinct improvement over such fixings previously employed, this being because the anchor members can so very easily be connected to the support element as building work progresses. That is to say, as each succeeding course of cladding or lining bricks or building blocks requiring lateral restraint is laid, the anchor members can be passed through the appropriate slots in the support elements to bring their notches into engagement with the parallel sides of the slots.
The anchor members can then be embedded in the cement or grout which has been laid prior to the laying of the next course of bricks or blocks. By the use of such lateral restraint fixings it has been found by carefully conducted tests that the requirements of B.S. 5628 (Code of Practice for structural Use of Masonry) can be met.
Various other modifications may be made. For example, the or each anchor member need not necessarily be split and splayed at one end so that it can be securely anchored in the walling material.
An equally effective anchoring could be effected by the end of the anchor member being apertured and receiving a peg extending perpendicular to the general plane of the anchor member, the peg conveniently being secured in position by welding, but other means could equally well be used. It will of course be understood that this form of lateral restraint fixing will normally be made of mild steel or stainless steel, copper or phosphor bronze or the like, but other materials of suitable strength could be used, for example a strong plastics material.
