Description

SPECIFICATION Glazing clip This invention is concerned with glazing clips for use in the mounting of glass or other panels in frames, such as window frames, particularly when the frames are made from cored extruded plastics profiles, and frames incorporating such glazing clips.
It has been proposed to provide, for use in the manufacture of window and the like frames, a cored extruded plastics profile which is so formed and shaped that, not only can it be manufactured very economically, to very close dimensional tolerances, and with virtually no wastage of material, but, with very simple operations performed thereon, can be used to assemble both an outer, static, frame and inner, opening frame of a window assembly or the like which may be fitted with glass or other panel material and readily interconnected by hinge mechanism or the like.
Such a profile preferably comprises a core of simple cross section, preferably rectangular, so as to avoid the need for complex machining and consequent wastage of material, the core being fed into plastics extruding machinery which extrudes plastics material to form a cladding around the core providing an at least substantially maintenance free protective surface. The rectangular core (which may be of good quality laminated plywood or any other suitable material having the desired shape and dimension retaining capability) provides the profile with a pair of parallel relatively wider surfaces and a pair of parallel relatively narrower surfaces perpendicularly disposed to the relatively wider surfaces, and, in the manufacture of the profile, dies of the plastics extruding machinery are so shaped that the extruded profile is provided (a) along one edge portion (conveniently defined as an outer edge portion) of one of said relatively wider surfaces with a glass or other panelretaining member which extends inwardly at an angle of 450 (or substantially so) over that surface, and (b) along the other edge portion of said surface an inner rib with an undercut face inclined to the said surface at an angle of 450 (or substantially so).
In the use of a cored extruded plastics profile as referred to in the preceding paragraph, the profile may be fed to the cutting machinery arranged to cut across the profile at angles of 450 to provide frame members of appropriate lengths for assembly into outer (static) frames and inner (opening) frames of windows or the like. Since the static outer frame does not require a glass (or other) panel-retaining member, the latter is severed from the frame members which are to be assembled as the outer frame by a cut running parallel to the first of the relatively wider surfaces thereof above mentioned, the cutting line being close to that surface. The glass-retaining member so severed can then be used (after cutting to the appropriate length) as a glazing strip which is assembled with the corresponding frame member of the inner, opening, frame by being positioned with its outer inclined surface tucked under the inclined face of the inner rib and may be supported by suitable supporting means at a locality adjacent to the glass or other panel, so that a glass (or other panel) located between the glass-retaining member and the glazing strip may be held in place.
With a view to providing for more positive location and retention of a glass or other panel in a frame, particularly in a frame constructed from a profile of a form generally similar to that above described, the present invention provides a glazing clip comprising a base portion adapted to be secured to a frame member of said frame, a first panel-locating member having a surface arranged to extend at least substantially perpendicularly to the base portion for engagement with one side of a glass, or other, panel, and a second panellocating member which comprises a surface which extends from an end portion of the base portion inwardly thereover to a portion arranged for engagement with the other side of said panel, said surface being adapted, in use of the glazing clip, to provide a support for a glazing strip.Conveniently the said surface of the second panel-locating member is adapted to extend at an angle of 450 (or substantially so) to the base portion.
When a glazing clip as set out in the last preceding paragraph is adapted to locate a glass, or other, panel in a frame comprising frame members made from a cored extruded plastics profile providing an inwardly extending glass, or other, panel-retaining member, the first panellocating member of the glazing clip is preferably spaced inwardly from an adjacent end portion of the base portion so as to provide a tongue which, when the clip is in use, extends under the panelretaining member of the frame member.
With a view to facilitating the location of a panel within a frame, a glazing clip as set out in the last preceding paragraph but one is preferably so formed that a mid portion of the base portion is provided with inclined wedge faces which, when the clip is in use, lie adjacent to an edge face of the panel to be located by the glazing strip, and are adapted to co-operate with a wedge member having a complementary wedge face which may be driven between said edge face of the panel and a wedge face of the glazing clip to support the panel at a desired position with respect to the frame member on which the glazing clip is mounted.
In a glazing strip as set out in the last preceding paragraph but two the panel-engaging portion of the second panel-locating member is preferably provided with a panel-facing surface which is arranged to extend in a plane at least substantially perpendicularly to the base portion of the glazing clip at an angle inclined slightly to the adjacent face of a panel received between the panel locating members so that a wedge member having a complementary inclined surface may be inserted between the panel and the panel-facing surface of the second panel-locating member to effect wedging of the panel between the panel locating members. Furthermore the first panel locating member is also formed to provide a surface inclined inwardly from the adjacent end of the base portion, the arrangement being such as to buttress the panel-engaging face against deflection.
In a glazing strip as set out in the last preceding paragraph but three and arranged as set out in the last preceding paragraph, the base portion may conveniently be provided with a wedge face arranged to extend widthwise of a panel located between the panel-locating member so that a complementary wedge member may be inserted between that wedge face and an adjacent edge face of the panel to locate the panel heightwise with respect to the base portion of the glazing clip.
Conveniently the various wedge faces are stepped to provide for interlocking thereof when in panel locating position.
With a view to facilitating the fixing of a panel in position in a frame therefor a glazing clip as set out in the last preceding paragraph but four is preferably provided with a fixing lug arranged to project from said base portion at a locality adjacent to the second panel-locating member so that it lies forwardly of a panel located between the panel-locating members.
With a view to avoiding the use of metal in the glazing of glass or other panels a glazing clip in accordance with the present invention is preferably made from extruded plastics material, conveniently from a polythene, polyethylene, polypropylene or polycarbonate.
There will now be given, with reference to the accompanying drawings, a more detailed description of a glazing clip which is provided by the invention and illustrative thereof (the illustrative glazing clip being described first in one form and then in a somewhat modified form) and of the manner in which the illustrative glazing clips may be incorporated in a window or like frame arrangement also illustrative of certain aspects of the invention. It is, however, to be clearly understood that the illustrative glazing clip is selected for description merely by way of exemplification of the invention and not by way of limitation thereof.
In the accompanying drawings:~ Figure 1 is a side view of the illustrative glazing clip in the first form; Figure 2 and Figure 3 are, respectively, plan and front views of the illustrative clip in the form shown in Figure 1; Figures 4 and 5 are, respectively, front and top views of a wedge member for use with the glazing clip shown in Figures 1-3; Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view of a window frame incorporating the illustrative glazing clip in the form shown in Figures 1-5; Figure 7 is a view corresponding to Figure 1 but showing the illustrative glazing clip in a somewhat modified form; and Figure 8 is a plan view of the glazing clip in the form shown in Figure 7.
The illustrative glazing clip, in each of its forms to be described, may be conveniently formed by extruding plastics material such as polyethylene, polythene, polypropylene or polycarbonate into suitably shaped moulds.
In its first form to be described with reference to Figures 1-6 of the accompanying drawings, the illustrative glazing clip comprises a base portion 1 of generally rectangular outline as seen in plan (Figure 2). Upstanding from the base portion is a first glass or other panel-locating member 3 which is provided with a panelengaging face 4 which is disposed perpendicularly (or substantially so) to the base portion at a locality spaced inwardly from one end portion of the base portion so as to provide a tongue 5. As' shown in Figure 2 the glazing clip comprises a second glass or other panel-locating member 7 which extends inwardly at an angle of 450 (or substantially so) from the other end of the base portion and terminates in a panel-engaging portion 11 which is arranged to seat against the panel and is preferably flexible. The dimensions of the glazing clip will naturally depend on the thickness of the panel to be located by the clip.
Where a double glazed unit of overall thickness of some 20 mm is to be used, the overall width w of the base portion may conveniently be of the order of 52 mm while the length 1, may conveniently be of the order of 25 mm. An outer, inclined, surface 9 of the portion 7 is provided with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive for a purpose hereinafter described.
A mid portion of the base portion is provided with inclined, stepped, wedge faces 13, 1 5 which, when the glazing clip is in use, lie adjacent to an edge face of the glass or other panel to be supported by the glazing clip. A wedge member 17 (Figures 4 and 5) having stepped wedge faces 19 complementary to the surfaces 13 and 15 may be driven (from one side of the clip or the other) between the edge face of the panel and the surface 13 or 15 to support the panel at the desired position with respect to the glazing clip and hence a frame member on which it is mounted, conveniently by a screw 21 extending through a lug 23 formed on the base portion of the clip at a locality adjacent to the portion 7 so that it lies in front of a glass or other panel received between the portions 3 and 7 of the glazing clip.
Figure 6 shows the illustrative glazing clip in the form just described incorporated in a window frame assembly made from a cored extruded plastics profile. As shown in Figure 6 an inner, opening, frame 30 comprises a core 31 within a cladding 33 of extruded plastics material providing also a glass or other panel-retaining member 35 inclined at an angle of 450 (or substantially so) from an outer edge of the upper (panel-facing) surface of the extrusion (as viewed in Figure 6) and also providing an inner rib 37 at an inner edge of said upper surface of the extrusion. The glazing clips, having been assembled at appropriate intervals around a glass or other panel P to be inserted in the frame, with the surfaces 4 of the panel-locating portions 3 engaging one face of the panel and the flexible portions 11 engaging the other face thereof, are secured to the panel-facing surface of the profile as shown in Figure 6 so that their tongues 5 extend under the glass-retaining member 35. The inclined faces 9 provide support for a glazing strip 39 a base portion of which is tucked under the inner rib 37 and the pressuresensitive adhesive on the faces 9 serving to secure the glazing strip in place. It will be understood that the glazing strip 39 is provided by cutting the portion 35 from the profile which is used to form the outer, static, frame 32 (as referred to hereinbefore).Wedges 17 driven in between the panel P and the surfaces 13 or 15 of the glazing clips support the panel P in the desired position.
Beads of sealing material 41,43 serve to seal the joints between the panel and the inner frame member. Hinge members (such as that shown at H in Figure 6) may be received between cooperating weather-proofing flanges 45, 47 extending from the inner and outer frame assemblies. Oil members such as that shown at 49 in Figure 6 may be secured to the outer frame assembly as required. The reference 50 represents a drainage or breathing passage extending through the profile.
In its modified form to be described with reference to Figures 7 and 8 of the accompanying drawings, the illustrative glazing clip comprises a base portion 101 of generally rectangular outline as seen in plan (Figure 8). Upstanding from the base portion is a first glass or other panel-locating member 103 which is provided with a panelengaging face 104 which is disposed perpendicularly (or substantially so) to the base portion at a locality spaced inwardly from one end portion of the base portion. As shown in Figure 7 the glazing clip comprises a second glass or other panel-locating member 107 which provides an outer surface 109 which extends inwardly at an angle of 450 (or substantially so) from the other end of the base portion and terminates in a panelengaging portion which comprises a panel-facing surface 111 which is arranged to extend in a plane at least substantially perpendicularly to the base portion 101 at an angle inclined slightly (e.g. some 1 00) to the adjacent face of a panel P received between the panel-locating members so that a wedge member 110 having a complementary inclined surface 112 may be inserted between the panel and the panel-facing surface 111 of the locating member 107 to effect wedging of the panel between the panel-locating members 103, 107.The inclined surface 109 of the portion 107 is provided with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive for supporting a glazing strip as in the case of the first form of the clip described above.
The base portion 101 has a projecting portion 102 which is provided with a wedge face 113 which, when the glazing clip is in use, is arranged to lie adjacent to an edge face of the glass or other panel to be supported by the glazing clip and extends widthwise of the panel. A wedge member 11 7 having a wedge face 11 9 complementary to the surfaces 113 may be driven (from the left hand side of the clip as seen in Figure 7) between the edge face of the panel and the surface 113 to support the panel at the desired position with respect to the glazing clip and hence a frame member on which it is mounted, conveniently by a screw extending through a lug 123 formed on the base portion of the clip at a locality adjacent to the portion 107 so that it lies in front of a glass or other panel received between the portions 103 and 107 of the glazing clip. The various wedge faces are preferably stepped to provide a locking action of the wedge members when in position.
As will be evident from Figures 7 and 8, the panel-locating members 103 and 107, in the modified form of the illustrative glazing clip are both in the form of a hollow right-angled prism shape (although they could be solid if desired).
With this construction the panel-engaging face 104 of the member 103 and the panel-facing surface 1 1 1 of the member 107 are buttressed against deflection when a panel P is located therebetween and the wedge member 1 10 is driven home. The panel-locating portion 103 is thus formed with a surface 106 which is inclined inwardly from the adjacent end of the base portion 101 (at an angle of some 400--450) and, in assembling a panel with a frame arrangement made from a cored extruded plastics profile like that shown in Figure 6, the surface 106 underlies the panel-locating portion 35 of the profile. The glazing strip 9 is tucked under the inner rib 37 of the profile and secured to the panel-locating portion 107 of the glazing clip by means of the pressure-sensitive adhesive on the surface 109.
The surface 106 is not secured to the portion 35 of the profile. In the event of the need to remove a panel from an assembled frame, the glazing strip 39 is eased away from the surfaces 109 of the glazing clips, the wedge members 110 and 11 7 are removed if necessary, and the screws securing the clips to the frame are removed thus enabling removal of the panel.
