Description
SPECIFICATION
Perforation die operating toy
This invention relates to a perforation die operating toy for forming perforated lines in a predetermined pattern in a sheet of paper, and more particularly to a perforation die operating toy by which perforated lines are formed on a decorating piece such as petalshaped decorating piece by locating the paper sheet in position in the toy and closing the die with the paper sheet therein.
When a number of decorating pieces, for example of petal form for making an imitation flower, are required, printed paper has been used. Printed petals of a desired shape are cut out from the printed paper along printed lines with scissors so that the required petal-shaped decorating pieces are obtained. It is, however, recognized that this conventional step generaily takes a long time to obtain the finished decorating pieces. Moreover it is very difficult to prepare a number of decorating pieces with a given contour within close tolerances and a high level of skill is required. Due to dimensional fluctuation with conventionally made decorating pieces, imitation flowers which are made by placing several conventional decorating pieces one upon another, have unattractive appearance.
The invention is intended to improve on the conventional method making it possible to obtain a number of uniformly shaped decorating pieces at a high efficiency.
According to the invention a perforation die operating toy for forming perforated lines in a predetermined pattern in a sheet of paper comprises a pair of base members, a pivot pivotally connecting the base members together along side edges thereof, one of the base members having a male die on an inner surface thereof and the other of the base members having a female die, corresponding in shape to the male die, on an inner surface thereof, the base members being arranged to receive a sheet of paper between said inner surfaces and the perforated lines being formed by pivoting the base members about the pivot towards a closed position until the male die is received into the female die.
Preferably said male die comprises a plurality of sharpened perforation punches raised on the inner surface of said one base member in the predetermined pattern, whereby the perforated lines are formed by receiving said sharpened perforation punches into the female die and the female die comprises two lines of protrusions extending in spaced parallel relation to one another in a direction corresponding to the pattern of the male die, whereby the intended perforated lines are formed by receiving the sharpened perforation punches between said protrusions.
The intended perforated lines are formed in said predetermined pattern by placing the sheet of paper on one of the base members, closing the base members by rotating the boards around the pivot and compressing the paper sheet therebetween by urging the male die into the female die. Then, by opening the base members, the perforated paper sheet is taken out and the waste is separated along the -perforated lines, to obtain the decorating piece.
Conveniently the toy also comprises an dp- erating device for urging the base members towards said closed position, the operating device including an opening for receiving the base members, a pair of parallel rollers located to the sides of the opening between which rollers the base members are arranged to be moved with the rollers engaging the base members to urge them together.
The operating device is intended to operate the perforation die assembly with an improved efficiency under uniform compression.
Preferably said pair of parallel rollers further comprises a pinion secured to each of said parallel rollers, the pin ions being in mesh with one another. The parallel rollers are rotated in opposite directions at the same speed and may be driven by means of a manual operating handle or by an electric motor.
The operating device provides uniform and efficient compression and perforation of the paper sheets by rotating the rollers and moving the perforation die assembly incorporating a sheet of paper between the rollers. After passing the assembly through the rollers, the base members are opened and the perforated paper sheet is taken out.
Thus it is an object of the present invention to provide a perforation die operating toy which can produce a sheet of perforated paper in a uniform manner at a high efficiency by a simple operation.
Other objects and advantageous features of the present invention will be readily apparent from the following description made with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a perforation die operating toy in accordance with the invention, a die assembly being shown in a fully opened position,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line ll-ll in Fig. 1, wherein one of the base members, shown in chain lines, is being turned towards the other member,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a sheet of paper which has been perforated by means of the toy of the invention to form a decorating piece in the form of a petal which is being taken out from the sheet along a perforated line,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an imitation flower which is made of a number of petal-shaped decorating pieces obtained from the perforated paper of Fig. 3, each of petalshaped decorating pieces being assembled one upon another,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a perforation die operating toy with operating device in accordance with the invention,
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken along line Vl-VI in Fig. 5, wherein a closed die assembly is shown in chain lines passing through the operating device,
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view taken along line VII-VII in Fig. 5, and
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view taken along line VIII-VIII in Fig. 5.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the perforation die operating toy comprises a pair of base members 1 and 1' which are pivotable about a pivot pin 4, the pin 4 providing a hinge and connecting the members to each other. The base member 1 is formed with a male die 2 in the form of perforation punch having a predetermined shape on the inner surface thereof, while the base member 1' is formed with a female die 3 on its inner surface defining a receiving recess arranged to correspond in shape to that of said male die 2. The base members 1 and 1' are arranged so that the male die 2 is received in the female die 3 when they are brought together.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the base members 1 and 1' are made of hard plastic material. The male die 2 is constructed with a number of sharp perforation punches 5 in the form of serrations which protrude a given distance from the inner surface of the base member 1, while the female die 3 on the base member 1' is formed of two lines of protrusions 6 and 6' which are extended in spaced parallel relation to each other along lines corresponding to the pattern of serrations on the base member 1 in such a manner that said lines are interposed between said protrusions 6 and 6'.
In the operation of the perforation die operating toy, first a sheet of paper P to be perforated is placed on the inner surface of the base member 1'. Then the base member 1 is turned about the pivot pin 4 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 so as to move into contact with the base member 1', thereby clamping the paper sheet P therebetween. The base members are then tightly pressed together by the operator. Thus the sharpened perforation punches 5 of the male die 3 are received in the recessed portions between the protrusions 6 and 6' whereby perforation lines (see Fig. 3) are formed in the pattern of a petal.
Next, the base member 1 is turned in the direction opposite to the arrow shown in Fig.
2 to open the members. The paper sheet P with the perforation lines L is removed from the base board 1'. Thereafter, the waste part is removed along the perforation lines L and the required petal-shaped decorating piece F is obtained.
An imitation flower A as illustrated in Fig. 4 is made by placing several petal-shaped decorating pieces F one upon another and then assembling other decorating piece forming the core portion of the imitation flower with the assembly of petal-shaped decorating pieces F.
Referring now to Figs. 5-8 there is illustrated an operating device 10 for the die 7 of
Figs. 1 and 2.
The operating device 10 comprises a casing 11 which is formed with rectangular passage openings 1 2 in its front and rear walls through which the perforation die assembly 7 is moved. A pair of horizontally extending rollers 9 and 9' are arranged in spaced parallel relationship in the casing 11, one of the rollers 9 being located above the rectangular passage opening 12, while the other roller 9' is located below the opening. The rollers 9 and 9' are rotatably supported at their ends in side walls 1 4 and 14' of a support member 1 3. The support member 1 3 is secured in the casing 11.The parallel rollers 9 and 9' are provided with pinions 1 5 and 15' respectively at one end and the pinions are of the same diameter, have the same number of teeth and are in mesh with each other.
Adjacent the wall 14' of the casing 11 is arranged a manual operating handle 8 having a shaft 8', provided with a spur gear 16. The spur gear 1 6 meshes with a gear wheel 1 7 fixed to the end of the upper roller 9 adjacent the pinion 1 5.
The operating device is operated by placing the assembled die assembly 7 in the device 10 in such a manner that its front edge having the pivot pin 4 is directed toward the rectangular passage opening 1 2. The die assembly 7 is inserted through the rectangular passage opening 1 2 and between the parallel rollers 9 and 9'. The handle is rotated by the operator and the parallel rollers 9 and 9' are rotated by way of gear engagement of the spur gear 16, gear wheel 1 7 and pinions 1 5 and 1 5'. Thus the die assembly 7 with the paper sheet P clamped therein moves between the parallel rollers 9 and 9' and is compressed by means of said rollers 9 and 9'.
As shown in Fig. 6 the die assembly 7 is seen in chain lines moving between the parallel rollers 9 and 9' under compression.
After movement through the device 10 of the die assembly 7 with the male die 2 and the female die 3 engaged together, perforated lines L are formed in the paper sheet in the required pattern, for example in the form of a petal (see Fig. 3). When the die assembly 7 leaves the operating device 10, it is opened and the paper sheet P with the perforated lines L formed thereon is taken out. Then the waste part of the paper is separated along the perforated lines L and the required petalshaped decorating piece F is obtained.
The pair of parallel rollers 9 and 9' are constructed such that the die assembly 7 moves between the rollers under frictional contact of the rollers with the outer surfaces of the die assembly 7. Thus it is preferable that the rollers are made with a surface of resilient frictional material such as rubber or the like.
The perforation die operating toy in accordance with the present invention makes it possible for decorating pieces such as petalshaped decorating pieces for imitation flowers or the like, to be manufactured efficiently and in a very simple manner. Thus the perforation die operating toy is very suitable as a toy for children or as a simple working tool.
