Abstract

206,670. Smith, H. B. Oct. 12, 1922. Paper tubes.-A hollow piece board or core for a roll of fabric consists of a flat sided tubular body of fibrous sheet material such as cardboard or stiff paper and adhesively-secured reinforcing-strips of sheet material conforming to the edge formation of the body. Blocks of laminated cardboard, wood, &c. may be secured by adhesive or by tacks or staples in the ends of the board and at intermediate parts. The shell or body may be impregnated with a hardening, strengthening, or stiffening agent such as glue, size, or sodium silicate. In the form shown in Fig. 10, the body is composed of a sheet 1 of cardboard having overlapping edges 2, 3 secured by adhesive, and adhesively-secured internal longitudinal strips 7 of cardboard conforming to the rounded edges of the board and having marginal portions 8 extending over flat side portions. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the body comprises two adhesively-secured sheets 60, 61, the abutting ends 62, 63 of one sheet being separated from the abutting ends 64, 65 of the other sheet, and internal longitudinal reinforcing- strips 68. The form shown in Fig. 12 is made by advancing two main sheets 15 and connecting them adhesively to continuous side strips 16, reinforcing-strips 18, and when desired binding-strips 20, the resulting material being cut into lengths to form individual piece boards. The piece shown in Fig. 10 is made by passing cardboard sheet 1 from a roll 30, Fig. 1, through a tank 90 where it is impregnated with sodium silicate, over guide rollers to a heated drying roller 93, and between pressure rollers 34, 35 where it is united fo reinforcing-strips 7 passing from rolls 31, 32 over glueing-rollers 33. An edge 3 of the sheet 1 is glued by a roller 36 and the assembled strips 1, 7 then pass over a former or support 38 provided with a heated pipe 39a disposed around the edges of the forward part of the former. The edges of the sheet 1 are folded one over the other by conical rollers 40 acting in conjunction with grooved rollers 41. The overlapping parts are pressed together by rollers 42 and after leaving the former 38, the resulting tubular material is drawn forwardly by rollers 46, 47. Rotating cutters 55 adapted at times to move forwardly with the material are periodically traversed across it to cut it into individual piece boards B, into which the end or other plugs may be inserted. The board B<1> shown in Fig. 7 is made in a similar manner, the two sheets 60, 61 of cardboard being fed from laterally displaced rolls, and one of the sheets passing over a glueing-roller. ,
