Abstract
206,586. Guelpen, L. J. van. Aug. 8, 1922. Burnishing by compression.-The edge of material, such as leather for the vamps of shoes, are burnished by contact with one of three peripheral grooves 10, Fig. 3, of a rotating tool 8. The tool is mounted in ball-bearings in the machine, and an electric-heater contained therein, is supplied with power through slip-rings and brushes the power being controlled by a rheostat. The work rests on a table 12, which is adjusted vertically by link-connection 142, Fig. 14, from an arm 141 on a shaft 15, this shaft being turned by a handle which can be locked in one of a series of positions. The spindle 36, Fig. 6, of a pressed-wheel 37 is journaled in a bracket 20 which is pivoted to an arm 14 carried by the plate 12. The presserwheel is raised on depressing a finger-piece, thereby raising a spring-controlled spindle 25<1>, which terminates in a block 26 carrying a fork 27, the fork embracing a groove in the hub of the wheel 37. A roller 28 on the block 26 engages a camslot in an arm 24 secured to the arm 14 and causes the presser-wheel to swing outwards as it is raised. A guide-arm having a foot 40, Fig. 3, is attached to the fork 27. A feed-wheel 46 slightly projecting through a flange 50, which is flush with the plate 12, is driven together with the tool 8 through belt and toothed gearing from a main pulley 125. A guide-pin 65, for preventing the work from crowding into the groove 10, is mounted on a sleeve 63 concentric with the tool 8. The sleeve 63 is movable in a sleeve 51 attached to the flange 50 and has roller and cam connection therewith so that as the sleeve 63 is rotated, it is, together with the pin 65, lowered to the position shown in Fig. 3, thereby withdrawing the pin below the surface of the plate 12 and allowing short inside curves of the material to be treated. The rotation of the sleeve 63 is effected through levers having pin and slot connection with each other from a hand operated lever, which is returned to its normal position by a spring, and has a screw limiting stop.
