Preferably, however, the fluid level is kept below this point to assure non-interference with the bearing operation.
Means are provided for confining the cement carried by the transfer wheel to a path on the lower face thereof which is in registry with the edge of the applicator. 'I'his means comprises a wiper or doctor 34 (Figs. 2 and 3) which is pivotally mounted on a pin 35 inserted slidably in the front wall of the receptacle. A spring Sii normally urges the wiper into contact with the Y Y lower face of the transfer wheel. A notch 3l is provided in the wheel brushing face of the doctor so as to permit retention of a band of cement thereon which is properly located to 4register with the applicator. This notch is suiiiciently deep to pass a cement band of maximum desired thickness. A wiper 38 is provided for the rear face of the transfer wheel, being mounted on a pin 39 which is carried in a lug 4Q that extends inwardly from a side wall of thereceptacle. A spring 4l normally urges this wiper into engagement with such wall. Screws 42 and 43 are carried by the receptacle with their lower ends abutting the upper face of wiper 34 on opposite sides of pin 35 to prevent rotation thereof about the axis of such supporting pin, and a screw 44 similarly abuts the upper face of wiper 38 to prevent rotation thereof in one direction. Rotation of the wiper 38 in the other direction is prevented by an extension 45 which is provided on wiper 34 so as to underlie a corner of wip-er 38 and also to engage and scrape the periphery of the transfer wheel.
A motor 46 is hung from receptacle Ill so as to drive, through a suitable reducing gear, a driving wheel 4l which is connected by means of a bell'l or sprocket chain 48 with a pulley 49 attached to the outer end of a shaft 5t, which is rotatably mounted in a portion of the front wall casting I6.
A bevel gear 5i is keyed to the inner end of this shaft in mesh with gear 25 of the transfer wheel shaft. It will thus be seen that operation of the motor is adapted to drive the transfer wheel, and that the applicator by virtue of-its driving connection at 20 with the upper portion of the transfer wheel driving gear 25 is also adapted to be rotated with its upper peripheral portion going in the same direction as the upper half of the transfer wheel. The gear ratios are such that the periphery of the applicator M and the opposed or registered cementr carrying portion of the face of transfer wheel l5 move at the same linear speed.
In operation, the transfer wheel l5 is adjusted by means of screw 3l so as to be spaced a predetermined distance from the upper periphery of the applicator i4, this spacing controlling the thickness of the delivered lm of cement. Such adjustment may be visually checked by throwing back the receptacle cover 22 and is also adapted to be indicated on a gauge 52 (Fig. 1) located! adjacent the outer end of the adjusting screw. Upon starting the motor, the transfer wheel and the applicator will be driven in the above described manner, the lower part of the wheel dipping into the fluid inthe receptacle l0 and carrying a portion thereof through the notch 3l to be deposited upon the applicator. An operator holds the work, such as a lasted shoe, against the exposed' lower edge of the applicator by hand, feeding the work around at a speed equal to that of the linear speed of the applicator periphery.
It willbe seen that there has been provided a machine which is well suited to fulfil its intended purposes.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and notV in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A fluid coating machine comprising a fluid receptacle, a driven shaft mounted therein, a fluid transfer wheel rotatable with and slidable along said shaft and having its lower portionr dipping into the uid in said receptacle, a rotatable fluid applicator having its peripheral edge in fluid receiving relation with the upper portion of said Wheel, means for driving said applicator, and means for moving and selectively holding saidwheel at a determined place along its shaft to'control the space between it and said applicator.' A fluid coating machine comprising a fluid receptacle, a driven shaft mounted in tilted position in a wall of said receptacle, a fluid transfer wheel rotatable with and slidable along said shaft and having its lower portion dipping into the fluid in said receptacle, a tilted rotatable fluid applicator having its upper peripheral edge in fluid receiving relation with the upper face portion of said wheel, said applicator` having its lower peripheral edge exposed for contact with work, such edge @having a downwardlyfacingv tilted position, means for driving saidapplicator, and means for moving and selectively holding said wheel at a determined place along its shaft to control the space between itand said applicator.
3. A fluid coating machine comprising a fluid receptacle, a driven shaft mounted in tilted position in a wall of said receptacle, a Viiuid transfer wheel rotatable with and slidable along said shaft and having its lower lportion dipping into the fluid in said receptacle, a tilted rotatable fluid applicator having its upper peripheral edge inV uid receiving relation with the upper face portion of said wheel, said applicator having its lower peripheral edge exposed for contact with work, such edge having a downwardly facing tilted position, means for driving said applicator, spring means normally urging said wheel awaitr from said applicator, and an adjusting screw for moving said wheel toward said applicator and holding it in determined spaced relation therewith.
4. A fluidcoating machine comprising a fluid receptacle, a shaft mounted in tilted position in a wall of'said receptacleand extending interiorly thereof, a fluid transfer wheel rotatable :with and slidable along said shaft and having its lower portion dipping into the fluid in said receptacle, a tilted applicator shaft located along said receptacle wall, a tilted rotatable. fluid applicator having its upper peripheral edge in fluid receiving relation with the upper? face portion of said wheel, said applicator having its lower'perlpheral edge facing in a downwardly facing tilted position, vmeans for adjusting said transferY wheel along its shaft and for selectively holding it in a determined adjusted position to regulate the space between it and said applicator, and wiper means for limiting the cementcarried by said transfer wheel to a path located .opposite the cement receiving periphery of said applicator.
5. A uidcoating machine comprising a iiuid receptacle, an applicator shaft, a transfer Wheel able applicator on said applicator shaft having a peripheral edge. a portion of which faces a side face of said transfer wheel and having another portion of said peripheral edge exposed'for contact with the work, means for driving said shafts, spring means urging said transfer wheel away from said applicator, and an adjustable abutment for regulating the distance between said Wheel and applicator.

A fluid coating machine comprising a fluid receptacle having an inclined front wall recessed rto provide a gear housing, an applicator shaft rotatably mounted along said wall and having its lower portion extended into said housing, a rotat- 'n able applicator atr the upper end and a gear at the lower yend of said shaft, a second shaft rotatably mounted in said wall substantially perpendicular to said applicator shaft and having its lower end extending into said housing and its upper end into said receptacle, a gear on said second shaft meshed in driving relation with applicator shaft gear, a transfer wheel rotatable with and slidable along the upper end of said second shaft and having its lower edge dipping into the contents of said receptacle and a side face of its upper portion opposed to the periphery of said applicator, a driving shaft mounted in said wall and having a driving gear meshed in driving relation with the gear on said transfer wheel shaft, and means for driving said driving shaft, said gears being proportioned to drive the periphery of said applicator and the opposed face portion of said transfer Wheel at equal linear speeds.
