Description
SPECIFICATION
A raising machine
The invention relates to a raising machine of the kind comprising a number of raising rollers regularly distributed around the periphery of a drum, the ends of each roller being rotatably supported at the drum heads.
Raising machines are of value in proportion to their useful operative width, which determines the maximum height of cloth which can be raised.
There is a tendency to increase the height of the cloth manufactured by modern looms. In addition, to increase productivity, it is sometimes advantageous to raise two or more strips of cloth simultaneously.
Existing raising machines in which the useful width has been increased are irregular in operation and it is consequently impossible to raise cloth having the required quality level. This is because of the deformation and more particularly bending of the raising rollers because of the greater load on them and because of their reduced rigidity due to the increase in length. Irregular operation in raising machines having an increased useful length is also caused by intermittent transverse vibration of the rollers; this results in a decrease in the quality level of the raised cloth and in increased noise and a drastic reduction in the life of the machine.
It has been suggested to increase the diameter of the raising rollers until they become sufficiently rigid. This suggestion is valuable provided the diameter does not exceed a given value (e.g.
75 mm) above which the roller curvature will be too small for efficient raising, and providing the circumferential pitch between adjacent cylinders does not exceed a given value, above which the interval between the action of one cylinder and the action of the next cylinder will be too great and adversely affect raising. In any case, this suggestion has the disadvantage of increasing the transverse dimensions of the drum and consequently increasing all the transverse dimensions of the machine with a resulting increase in weight and cost.
In order to increase the rigidity of the rollers, it has also been suggested to modify the bearings at the ends of the rollers so that they serve static purposes instead of being simple bearings and joints. As a result of this suggestion it is necessary to increase the length of the roller ends, the length of the bearings in the direction of the roller axis, and the thickness of the drum heads. This suggestion has the disadvantage of a further increase in the width of the raising machine, in addition to the desired increase resulting from the increased useful operating width.
The aim of the invention is to provide a raising machine of the initially-mentioned kind having structural and functional characteristics such that it can raise cloth having an increased height, while overcoming the aforementioned disadvantages of the prior art.
To this end, the invention provides a raising machine characterised in that each end of each raising roller is formed with a cylindrical seat coaxial with the roller and having a predetermined depth, and each head of the drum is integral with a journal extending coaxially in the seat and coupled thereto in rotation.
Other features and advantages of the raising machine according to the invention will be clear from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, given by way of nonlimitative example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a raising machine according to the invention, and
Figure 2 is a view in section of a detail of the raising machine in Figure 1.
In the accompanying drawings, the general reference 1 denotes a raising machine according to the invention comprising a number of cylindrical raising rollers 2 regularly distributed around the periphery of a drum 3. The ends 4, 5 of each roller 2 are rotatably borne around an axis X-X on respective heads 6, 7 of a drum 3, which in turn is mounted so that it can rotate around an axis Y-Y in the raising machine 1.
A central portion of rollers 2, having a length slightly less than the length of the rollers, has a conventional metal brush coating 8, whereas alternate end portions of the rollers, which are free from the covering edge, are formed with grooves 17 for trapezoidal driving belts (not shown in the drawings).
In the raising machine 1 according to the invention, each end 4 (5) of each roller 2 is formed with a cylindrical seat 9 (10) coaxial with the roller axis X-X and having a preset depth. Each head 6 (7) of drum 3 is integral with a journal 1 1 (12) extending coaxially in the cylindrical seat 9 (10) and coupled thereto in rotation.
Advantageously journal 11(12) and the corresponding seat 9 (10) are coupled in rotation by two rolling bearings 13 and 14 (1 5 and 16) positioned at the end of seat 9 (10).
The roller 2 illustrated in Figure 2 has grooves 1 7 at its end 5. The grooves are formed in a sleeve 18 disposed partly in overhang relationship on cylinder 2 and rotatably and axially secured thereto by a key 19 and a corresponding dowel 20. The rolling bearing 1 5 is positioned at the overhang portion of sleeve 18.
The main advantage of the raising machine according to the invention is its increased useful operating width; its bulk is not increased beyond what is strictly necessary for obtaining the aforementioned increase in useful width.
In addition, the raising machine according to the invention is silent in operation, is long-lasting and the quality level of raising is greater than what could reasonably be expected, since the rollers are mounted on holders defining a substantially reduced free gap between them.
